I >had originally tried to get her to put me on glucophage instead of >tolazamide since I have menstrual problems and glucophage is also used >to treat PCOS but she didn't want to. ****Judith, I know that glucophage (metformin) works well and isn't a sulfyln... (never can spell it), like Amaryl and lots of others, which burn out your pancreas by forcing it to produce insulin. Glucophage works differently, lowering your blood sugar somehow (I am not a technical person). So I'd vote for glucophage, although some folks need to ease into it, because it can cause tummy problem for awhile. I never had any trouble with it. Barb -------- Rainbow Farm Unltd. Guest guest
<which burn out your pancreas by forcing it to produce insulin.> I used glyburide 2.5 mg about 16 months with great sugars, and I am on diet only. I don't agree with your statement, made like it was a fact. Sam

Really, tho, I think most people would rather have a " quick fix " i.e. pill, than make the effort to seriously change their eating habits. That's just plain human nature -- and our susceptibility to the pill pushers (that is, the drug companies) and their aggressive and massively funded advertising. Hopefully we on this list are willing to make the extra effort. Vicki

LOL Don't forget, my own pancreas is working *after* pill use, it isn't burnt out, and quite well too. So it boils down to, the statement, that sulfs burnout pancreas, can't be true for everyone, or I'd be on insulin forever. On the types, type 1 *requires* insulin or they die, they have absolutely no insulin from pancreas, type 2 can be on insulin, but won't die if they stop insulin or meds, as there is some insulin production. Guest guest
For me medications served as a bridge to get in control by diet. I was literally forced off oral hypoglycemics by repeated low sugars. I was put on insulin with no trial of orals, and that has become a sore point for me. I am bothered when people (aa friend of mine) go the pill route with no thought of change, three by-pass operations included. I read that only 12% of type 2 control with D & E, and that really makes me sad. I have actually heard of doctors that teach dietary control, but it is self defeating, the patient is no longer dependent on the doctor. I think there may be co-dependence at work here. I want you each to know what your medication does, it's effects. I and many others have been able to leave medications, and I would encourage each of you to consider dietary control as an addition to your control methods. Re: DM Oral Meds In a message dated 00-10-02 11:00:30 EDT, you write: << I have actually heard of doctors that teach dietary control, but it is self defeating, the patient is no longer dependent on the doctor. I think there may be co-dependence at work here. >> Some docs do but based on their past experience, don't seem to have much confidence in patients' willingness to continue so they also prescribe meds (which, as I said, is the " American way " ). Also of course, you're right that if it works they lose patients...but I don't think that is their motivator. There are so many diabetic patients out there, they have plenty to fill the void made by one patient getting it right on his/her own. Many docs don't even take new patients, their schedule is totally filled. My doc has many diabetic patients (tho he's an internist) and says I'm one of very few that has taken an active part in trying to control my diabetes. He supports me totally and pretty much goes along with anything I want to do (after discussing it with him first). My diabetic educator connected with his office was the one who started me low carbing. When I wanted to get off sulfs he agreed. When I suggested basal insulin he agreed. When I said I was ready to quit Glucophage he agreed (a year after he himself suggsted it). When I wanted to add vitamins and other " naturopathic " pills he agreed. The one thing he said no to was taking chromium supplements and he explained why. (But don't ask me to repeat it here; since I wasn't going to take it I forgot what he said). He also supports my work with my " online diabetic mentor, Ron S. - I keep him appraised what we're up to -- and when I see him at three-month visits we always discuss what new info I've gotten from my diabetes lists and other online sources. He's a real sweetie! (But maybe he's exceptional). Guest guest
Glad you put that in there about YMMV, Tootie. But I don't consider this " bickering " -- Sam has his opinion and what he does apparently works for him. I have doubts about how it would work for others, tho, and I wanted to make sure all the newbies have the benefit of Bernstein's words on the dangers of sulfs. 'Nuff said (except I'd like to hear what Sam has to say about it). Vicki In a message dated 00-10-02 17:46:17 EDT, you write: << YMMV!!!!!!!!
