Guest guest
Thanks, Sally, for this! I just checked our abbreviations list because I knew we wouldn't have PICC line on it (I helped with this list about four years ago!)...we need to add it, but until then, here is a paragraph or two about PICC from Wikipedia: A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC or PIC line) is a form of intravenous access that can be used for a prolonged period of time (e.g. for long chemotherapy regimens, extended antibiotic therapy, or total parenteral nutrition). First described in 1975,[1] it is an alternative to subclavian lines, internal jugular lines or femoral lines which have higher rates of infection. Subclavian and internal jugular line placements may result in pneumothorax (air in the pleural space of lung). A PICC is inserted in a peripheral vein, such as the cephalic vein, basilic vein, or brachial vein and then advanced through increasingly larger veins, toward the heart until the tip rests in the distal superior vena cava or cavoatrial junction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripherally_inserted_central_catheter Virginia PS, Lesley, I'm glad you asked this because many others may not know about the abbreviations file found in our Files section! We have so many helpful files there, I urge everyone to check it out and see what is there! > > Lesley.. > One good source is right on the CCI page. > Go to http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group// > Click on the " Files " section, and you'll find a helpful file on this topic, > and many others, as well.. > Sally R... Guest guest
As an FYI, be careful about infections with PICC lines. In patients like us, some of us can be more susceptible to infections and can also be allergic to the tape that is needed to hold it in place. (I'm an RN with a bunch of experience with them.)  Just my $0.02.  Subject: Re: Abreviations-- PICC line To: Date: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 11:42 AM  Thanks, Sally, for this!
