Agreed on both counts. About Canadian fleabane though: it's called Canadian,

but it's naturalized over wide areas of Europe. Here's where it grows:

You'll likely find it where you're at, if you start to look for it.

(It has a peppery taste, if I remember correctly).

I don't usually have problems with painful menses either! This is the only lady!

She is in her mid thirties. Last 2 babies were Caesars - no endometriosis was

detected. She does not have medical insurance, so we cannot rule out fibroids.

She has a 2 weekly cycle and bleeds for a week, with cramping that responds to

Ibuprofen or cramp bark. Her bowels become " inflamed " (her words) with the onset

of bleeding. After a day of pain, the pain changes and is unresponsive to

anything we use. She has one day of extremely heavy bleeding (she uses a

mentstrual cup and says it measures 3x normal flow) and then light for 6 days.

Her sx have improved, but are obviously far from right.

Her diet was atrocious: she is now gluten free and knows that is helping, (she

did have IBS) generally low in inflammatory foods, lots fruit and veg, adequate

protein. She is of slight build, not very curvy.

Over several years we have used Achillea, Gelsimium, Alchemilla, Paeonia, Vitex,

Potentilla, Geranium, plus some anti inflammatory herbs for high prostaglandin

levels. Her progesterone levels tend o be low although she has carried 3 babies

to term quite well.

I have changed her mix this week to include Cimicifuga, sinensis,

Berberis and a little Caulophyllum. I have given her a pain mix with Piscidia,

Pulsatilla and Vib op, plus a tea of motherwort, licorice, fennel, chamomile,

ginger and yarrow. I am hoping I won't actually need the fleabane - the question

was proactive!

Thanks for your input everyone - I appreciate it

Hi ,

I have never had difficulty dealing with painful menses.

What have you used so far? Is there clotting? Have you a problem with 'cold' in

that area?

I would fully explore using indiginious herbs first before trying herbs from

other continents.

Hi , I think that the sinensis might aggravate the heavy bleeding?

And I always use one of the Viburnums, usually opulus in the main mix.

Having said that, I had a patient with such severe menstrual pain that

nothing touched it including Magnesium supplements. She moved away,

I don't know if her then local herbalist had any more success.

Where did the fleabane information come from?

The fleabane info came from Aviva Romm's new textbook on Women's Health

Actually, to be strictly accurate it did reduce, but they usually

clear up completely in time
