Guest guest
Can I answer this for my daughter that isn't DS or MDS? Speech Problems: IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Hi Everyone I spoke with our advisory board member, Dr. Libby Kumin tonight regarding the special speech problems that we are seeing lately with our children here. I know that many of you have said that your children are " non-verbal " or have possible Apraxia. Whatever speech issue your child is having, I NEED YOUR RESPONSE!! Tell me your child name and age and explain exactly what they are doing in regards to speech. If they are not having Apraxia issues or 'non-verbal' issues, but are having a different speech problem, please respond also! And, if your child used to have a speech problem, but it is now improving, or better, let us know that too! And tell us what you did to help it!! Then, tell me if you would be willing to complete a research survey (about 35 questions) regarding speech. If we can get enough participants for this research, we can get it in the works quite quickly! This is the ONLY way for us to discover what these problems are that our children are having and how we can help them to communicate!! Please don't wait to respond. I would like to get this information out to Dr. Kumin before the week is up! Just click reply and reply to the group! This will help all of you discuss these speech problems and what you are doing in your area to help them. We have over 600 people in our support group here! I hope for 600 emails before Friday!!! (I know...be careful what you wish for!! LOL) Thanks! Kristy
Guest guest
Well my son is 14 months, and he says momma, oh, mmmnn, yeah, babba (for bottle)and mo (for more) He can sign the words more, eat, bye bye, so altogether he can say/sign 7 words, im pretty sure that is considered a delay. We just started sign language a month ago and after three weeks of learning the sign for " more " he has attempted to say it he just cant get the " r " sound out but he can definantly sign it. So I guess since he hasnt started actual speech therapy yet, Im not quite sure what issues he may or may not have, I just assume he is delayed in speech. His physical therapist said he has the best muscle tone in his face shes ever seen with a child that has downs syndrome, also doctors have said the same thing, I told her it may be because he has MDS instead of DS she said " yeah maybe " has any of your therapists said that about your child and does it matter with speech as far as SAYING the word correctly? Guest guest
Hi Sorry! This is going to be specific to mosaic Down syndrome. However, for those who really think their child has MDS, but have the Ds diagnosis, we would like to hear from them also, and just put that in your response. Guest guest
My daughter is Ellen. She is three years old. She was diagnosed when she was about 2 with mild apraxia. I am not so sure of this now. She is not non verbal. Ellen has mds. This is where we are at now. When ME was little on, she would have what her speech therapists referred to as pop outs. She would say words, as clearly as could be, then we would never hear them again. Along with that, she had a growing vocabulary that she has used appropriately and consistently. She says Lucky (her dog) Belle (her cat), she refers to each of her siblings(in particular, her one sibling, she will say his name, Nick, as clear as can be), mom, dad, eat, please (pease), thank you , and your welcome, hi, bye, yes, no, drink (jink),apple (bapple),banana, (nana), cracker(clear as can be). She has a nice little, useful vocabulary. When we say I love you, she replies, I love you too. It nearly sounds like one word, but is also very clear. She will also say things like, No Nick. Or bad Belle. Or I want chips. She says hotty for potty. She says tickle tickle, when we say, cut the pickle. She will attempt to say peek a boo, but it is pretty blended. I know there are more, and but this is all I can think of now. ME has a nice little list of signs she does along with her little list of words. She has little to no frustration with communication, and does a good job of letting us know her needs. She understands all of what we say to her, and follows directions beautifully. Ellen loves music, and will " sing along " with many songs. Ellen also will have whole conversations with her own language. If she is mad at her brother, she will discipline him, with an entire lecture of made up words. Usually, at the end, she will finish it with a word she knows. She will sing for us, with the entire song of made up words as well. Of course, again at the end, she will finish the song with a word she knows. Sometimes throwing words she knows in the middle of the song. Ellen loves to be read to, and loves to " read " . She will move her finger along the page, in the correct order, and " read " the book. She shows great expression when she is " reading " . All of the words will be made up, and she will end with a word she knows. Hopefully this helps you to understand Ellen's speech a bit more. Thank you for taking the time to do a study on our children. I hope I have shared what you are looking for. I would happily fill out a survey for your study. Guest guest
Hi all sorry I have not been too actitve in the group lately. Anyway Isabella, is 19 months old. She was very quiet as a baby. At 12 months old she tried to say more words than she does now. She seems to want nothing to do with speaking, just no interest. She gets words and says them for a month or two and then they seem to be lost. She seems to also have trouble saying words when she wants them like bye. She will always wave bye but the word seems to be delayed a few minutes if it comes out at all. Sue Isabella 19 months mds Subject: Speech Problems: IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Guest guest
Austin , age 5 (6 in Oct.). Babbles, no clear words, in ST during School Year. He will mimick the speech pattern (like voice influction, sounds, voice pitch, etc.) and he does say NO & OW very clearly, but no other words. I would be very happy in doing a survey for Dr. Cumin. I did take Austin to a Speech Pathologist this summer to try to get a Dx of Apraxia and Austin absolutely would not cooperate, so it was impossible to Dx him as Apraxia. Austin currently uses Sign Language to communicate his wants/needs. Guest guest
Kristy--My son, is almost 34 yrs old. I'm not sure whether or not he is too old for this survey. I am always interested in anything to do with research on Speech. He can be understood by some people and not by others. If he says what he wants at a resturant, usually the wait person looks at me for clarification. He also has what I term " lazy lips " because of mumbling. He still cannot sequence sentences, but seems to do ok with 1 or 2 word responses. Also he has auditory discrimination difficulties. He's pretty good at gesturing and gives the first letter of what he is trying to communicate. This " deficit " is the main problem that keeps our children from being employed in jobs other than non-verbal positions. He could beneifit fom language therapy and speech, bu there is no coverage from insurance because it is considered long term vs stroke, etc. Let me know if you need more imput. I'm not sure if I am sending the reply correcty, but will give it a try. Thanks, Rita Treckman Subject: Speech Problems: IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Guest guest
Rita - I may be speaking out of turn but your son will NEVER be too old for a study on MDS. He has it, that is it. My daughter (9) can mostly be understood by her peers but adults can understand if they take the time to listen - most of us don't - too much other stuff going on to stop and listen to a little girl. Guest guest
Hi, I have a beautiful little girl named Hailey Modesitt. She is 5 years old. She communicates with a few single words and by pointing to what she wants. The only sounds she has are ds and bs. She losses words after saying them for a few months. She does the same with foods. She will eat a certain food for a month and then never eat it again. She shows no interest in talking. She is unable to repeat sounds but some sounds are heard during play. She is able to say mom but all other words beginning with m are pronounced with a b. example: more would be bore. She is unable to move her tongue around normally when ask to do so but does do some tongue movement when she is just playing. She has low muscle tone in her mouth. It is difficult for her to chew her food also so we have to cut it in small bitesize pieces. There realy needs to be more research for our children. They need our help and I just dont know what else to do. She has gotten speech therapy since she was 6 months old and is now using a talking device and some signs to communicate. It very slow going but she is making progress. Any help would be appreciated. To answer your other question....yes I would be willing to fill out the survey. I would be willing to do just about anything to help Hailey and the other kids. Haileys dignosis: Down Syndrome,Apraxia, severe ADHD,Sensory disorder, and mild Autisum. Thank you , Becky Modesitt > > Hi Everyone > I spoke with our advisory board member, Dr. Libby Kumin tonight > regarding the special speech problems that we are seeing lately with > our children here. > > I know that many of you have said that your children are " non- verbal " > or have possible Apraxia. > > Whatever speech issue your child is having, I NEED YOUR RESPONSE!! > > Tell me your child name and age and explain exactly what they are > doing in regards to speech. > > If they are not having Apraxia issues or 'non-verbal' issues, but are > having a different speech problem, please respond also! > > And, if your child used to have a speech problem, but it is now > improving, or better, let us know that too! Guest guest
Hi Kristy, Even though we still haven't had Chase tested yet for MDS, he hasn't spoken a word and he's 17months. if we ask or tell him something, sometimes we can see a response in his facial expression, but when he tries to tell us something, we can't understand, and its starting to be very frustrating. He's had just 1/2 hour of speech once a week, but starting next week (this was because of a grant), we are going to an hour a week, plus I'm going to take him for speech and language therapy on top of the regular speech he gets at home. Guest guest
Hi Kristy, Mark is 26 months old now and uses a combination of signs and some verbal words. He is about 7 mos delayed in speech, but technically he's not if the signs are factored into the equation. He has about 150 signs that he knows how to use or understands. He can say words with " w " but not fully. For example, " white " sounds like " whiiiiiiaaaa " (like a really bad Texas accent!), and water is " wawa " , wall is " waooo " . He says dada a lot but not so much with mama although he's using it more. He can say " ma " for gandma when he sees her picture and " na " for his other grandmother when prompted. We started signing early last summer and he now can pick up signs almost immediately by watching " Signing Times " . He is obsessed with lights so we are learning that sign (it's a hard one for a toddler to do so we improvise), and he can do the sign for the sun. I'd be happy to complete the survey. Thanks! gwyn > Hi Rita > Thanks so much for responding! We would love for to be part of this > survey! Guest guest
Hi Kristy, I know that I have shared this with you….However, this is for the group. said his first word dada @ 6 months. He gradually started having more works like bye bye, baby, boy and so on. At around 17 months he started to lose many of his words. At the time his PT contributed it to his focusing on learning to walk. When I look back none of my other children lost any of their words. He started to talk again around 3yrs. His words were never consistent and weeks would go by until I would hear another word. Even now when he says a words it is in a low tone and he says it as clear as a bell. Other times has his own language, and he won’t say another word for a couple of weeks or more. Recently here are his new words and how he uses them…. About two weeks ago it was a Sunday morning and my husband and I were still laying in bed. came into the room and put on PBS for him. A commercial came on for Sesame Street and said Yaaa! Then when it did not came on he said OH DAM! Very loud. This past week I pulled up to the school and I said were @ school and his reply was “I know”. Then one time @ school he was tired and he told his aid “I want mom”. His words are always very clear and he says them in the right content. On a few occasions he will say a word loud. For the most part they a soft and he says them quick. One time when he was three his SP said what is on your sock? He said “oatmeal”. has been diagnosed over the past year with SID and apraxia. mom to 13, 10 and 11 months, 8 and 5 ½ mDs From: MosaicDS [mailto:MosaicDS ] On Behalf Of Kristy Colvin Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 12:11 AM To: MosaicDS Subject: Speech Problems: IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Guest guest
, I know this is for Kristy, but I had to laugh when I read this. The part about him saying Oh damn. It reminded me of a word I did not put on our list. LOL. One day, we were trying to coax words out of Ellen. We would show her stuff and say, what is this. Well, we came to the fruit, and held up an apple, and said, " ME, what is this? " She said, " Bapple. " Then we held up a banana, same question, reply, " Nana " Then on to the orange, and her reply, " Shi* " And now, when ever we ask her if she wants one, or what it is, she says, shi*. Hubby has apologized, and hopefully we will put an end to this. LOL. But your story reminded me of a word we missed on our list. LOL. Diane --------- Speech Problems: IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Guest guest
Oh, I SO HATE the term " mentally retarded. " I cannot believe some states are still using that term, but they are. In KY, a child whose IQ is between 55 and 70 and has adaptive behavior scores in that same range is eligible under the category of Mild Mental Disability, while a child whose IQ is below 55 and has adaptive behavior scores in that same range is eligible under the category of Functional Mental Disability. I know some people take issue take issue with the term " disability, " but I'd MUCH rather say a child has a " disability " than to say they are " retarded. " At least " disability " is not used in a derogatory manner in the everyday speech of a big chunk of the population. A. Special Educator Simon Kenton High School (859)960-0348 cynthia.jones@... Guest guest
Oh Diane your story brought back a similar memory for me, not with Austin, but with Trey. When Trey was 2 or 3, he had a very hard time with speech (probably due to his blanket, but that's another story). Some words we could make out, others were " greek " or " Trey-nese " . It made for some comicial times but not so comical others. Whenever we were out on the interstate and Trey would see the Tractor Trailer Trucks he'd yell out " **ck " for " Truck " ! When my Mom first heard this, I thought she was gonna faint! We finally had to convince him to say " Big Car " until he got the TR sound together, but it was funny at first and it was even funnier to see my Mom's reaction..but only once LOL Blessings Abound, (Becky) Rowe Family Assistance Coordinator www.imdsa.org or becky@... Guest guest
Hi Kristy, I, too, would be willing to do a survey to try to help others with speech difficulties. Craig is 20 and has has speech therapy his whole life. He is understandable by some people and not by others. Some days are better than others. Also has " lazy lips " and slurrs or leaves off sounds. His sentences are sometimes short and incomplete so that you have to play 20 questions to figure out what he is talking about and hope he isn't going to get frustrated and say " never mind " . He might say " My jacket " and then we have to pull it all together; then at other times the sentence is full enough to get it together for a conversation. " wh " words are very difficult for him to understand properly and we have been working on that for a long time. We still work on reading and I have found that using the signs we learned (and I have forgotten some of them) helps in this area too. I need to refresh myself with words like were, then, there, here especially. Terry Speech Problems: IMPORTANT INFORMATION! (I know...be careful what you wish for!! LOL) Thanks! Kristy
