Dear Alice,

I was struck by a memory these words brought back

" Wh people have difficulty receiving compliments, it's usually for one of 2

reasons. Ego thinks: " Hmm what's the secret agenda here? "

I once met a very wise older woman, a nun, who I thought was wonderful. She was

in charge of the men in the class for permanent deacon's. I visited her when I

could and she wasn't too busy, because I liked her, and I knew she would lend

her wisdom.

After ray decided not to be ordained, I called her when we were in town and

asked if I could come by.

The first thing she said to me was " why have you come " I can't do anything for

your husband anymore "

I was so completely shocked I was speechless. I didn't see the relationship

between the two at all.She finally said, I always thought you came to see me, so

I would do what I can for your husband "

Another idol fell.

I was very unhappy that she could even think that is why I came to see her, when

the thought was furthest from my mind. I just came because I really admired and

liked her.( I then told her so)I had never even mentioned the deaconate program

or anything about it, yet she had so misunderstood.( to be honest, I thought Ray

didn't need any help anyway, he was doing fine).

I had really enjoyed our time together,I had no secret agenda, and now she was

attempting to cheapen it.

Well, after a while I decided that that was probably a result of her training.(

She had retired from being Mother-General for her order) I forgave her, but it

hurt. I never saw her again because we moved.Still this many years later, I am

still sad

So I agree some people do not know how to accept love, just like complements

truly meant.

good luck on the surgery. I'll keep you close.

much love,

Toni

Another stopping-in-my-tracks corker! Loved this! Is this original or

a quote?

I confess it is original - a gift fr Sophia.

Gives me an excuse to send another more recent goodie:

" Turn the praise you receive into flowers to rush to give your Divine Guest.

(But you may smell 'em on the way! "

Mercy Muchmore

Wh people have difficulty receiving compliments, it's usually for one of 2

reasons. Ego thinks: " Hmm what's the secret agenda here? " n comp goes thataway

or

" If this pers knew me as well as I know myself, they wld never say that. So

they're stoopid! " n that comp goes 'tother way. Then the ego is bereft n

feels

no one appreciates 'em..

Whitmont advised me yrs ago wh I was worried ab becoming inflated at feedback

at end of my lectures. He said: " Don't deny it!! Count to 10 n offer it up " .

Works like a charm. Fr then on wh peop applauded I wld turn my back n applaud

to the above:}[ So the goodie above is a variation on his advice.

The alternative is the nasty koan u get into: false humility n inner contempt

for same. I am forever grateful to him n hasten to share this w/u bec I am

convinced u all, being generous w/wisdom, may often face the same dilemma.

All the good really comes THROUGH us, conveyed by Sophia fr our Div Guest,

not OUT of us.

N I learned fr my Teacher's example how to tell a good 'guru' fr a false one:

The guru receives the projection of the Self [DG] of the student. The false

one identifies w/projection n thinks himself a big cheese, n often puffs up

bigger n bigger. ex. Jim et al

The wise one will hold up a mirror.

All this is implied in the BEEJUM BOOK in the chap " Figg Newton's Tale " .

The ultimate paradox is that the more you get to know, the more u know u

DON'T know!:}

Which is why I consider myself yr fond
