my daughter (now 4) was on it for about 6 mos starting last winter. we split dose in half to avoid cramping and bloating. didn't have other side effects. but also took probiotics at the same time. pediatric GI recommended we do that. was happy with it, but happier to be off of it. when we weaned off of it, we took her down to every other day, then every third day, etc. wanted to make sure her poops stayed regular. good luck. happy to answer other questions about it if anyone needs more info.

My 3year old was diagnosed this week with a bowel obstruction (not complete) which explains why he had diarhea for the last month. The doctor put him on Lactulose (I refused Miralax). So far...it is working and without any side effects.

From what I read, it is a synthetic sugar and very effective. I have not heard this group say much about it and was wondering why there isn't much discussion about it.

Any opinions?

As if high fructose corn syrup weren't bad enough and worth avoidingon it's own - it turns out that much of the time, it is contaminatedwith mercury, too..... http://www.washingt onpost.com/ wp-dyn/content/ article/2009/ 01/26/AR20090126 01831.html

It was prescribed for him...I have not seen it OTC. It is working well, but he feels kind of punky - as he should give the bowling ball of poo he is moving through his colon.

Hello everyone. I'm writing to ask about Lactulose experiences with you all.

ie. Does it work for you? Are there bad side-effects? etc.

My son's health care team discussed starting him on Miralax, as the lactulose

hasn't been working to make him defecate daily like they want. He has a large

bowel movement about every 3-5 days on average. He gets all his fluids from a

stomach tube (G tube), so we are doing all we can in that department.

I am mainly wondering if the Lactulose is a safe drug to be using (ie. does

anyone know of any bad side effects from longterm use?). And if it worked for

anyone longterm?

we used it for about 6 mos with our daughter when she was 3.  lots has been written about it on this board - esp the dosage. we got off of it and now only use probiotics, strict diet (not applicable to you because of the tube) and one goodbelly drink a day. only side effect we had was some cramping and bloating. good luck adn let me know if you need more info.

it was hard searching specifically for lactulose, as tons of messages come up.

I read something about yeast infections being more a risk? I just wanted to

make sure we weren't treating him with something like miralax, that has so many

controversies surrounding it.

What probiotics do you recommend? Is activia yogurt daily good enough, or do you

supplement with something daily?

My daughter has been on lactulose since November and was off for a week when she was switched to Miralax (and then had an adverse reaction to it and was put back on lactulose). Her dosage has been continually upped and now I feel like it is not working anymore. Have a call into my GI doc and waiting for the results of what to do. I'll let you know!

My experience with Lactulose with our 3 yr old was'nt great. It caused a lot of gas - his belly was hard and extremely uncomfortable. Also his stools became acidic from the sugar and caused a red bottom. This made pooping even more painful and he withheld as much as he could. Also....it was not effective enough for us to use. As for safety....it is basically engineered sugar....I don't worry too much about that. If it works for you...I would use it. It just did not work for us. We have had great success with Magnesium citrate and exlax on occassion. You have to have healthy kidneys for regular Magnesium use though, so check with your doctor if you want to try this.

Hi,the concerns about lactulose is the thought that it feeds yeast and fungal

issues and then later gi issues(fungus/yeast is a big cause of constipation). I

think some here have good results with it and some have had negative. We

personaly wouldnt use due to the yeast/fungal issues. But if someone is using

also adding good antifungals(kills yeast/fungus) could help counter the side

affects! Have you considered aloe juice? A good preventive fighter for

viral/bacterial issues, natural anti inflamatory(big constipation issue), lots

more good on it plus is natural stool softner! Jennie<><

I've used it myself and had horrible cramps. I had a GI doc. tell me one time to try on yourself FIRST

whatever you plan to use for your child !!

Kathy

Lactulose

Alright, I'm considering lactulose and need to hear what everyone's experience and knowledge of it is.

What are the side effects? I understand that some pretty severe cramping can occur.

I am also reading that PeG is generally more effective in children than lactulose.

What about sorbitol?

Our ped said the getting the dose right is key with lactulose. The cramping and gas is actually the prebiotic feeding and killing bad guys. Also if there is too many bad guys it will feed them too. That is why one of the people recommended a probiotic as well.
