Wednesday started of as Normal Greek Day for Us. Ambi got up early morning at

five am for her customary walk to watch

turtle hatchlings make way to the Sea and watch sunrise. To my horror, she took

one of my cameras today!

Jiwan and I woke leisurely woke up around Ten am for Greek Omlet, made with

onions, tomatoes, fetta cheese, olives,

peppers. Ambi has Greek Breakfast.....Greek Yoghurt with honey and cinnamon

bread roll! How some one could survive on

this beats me! We headed to the beach for the day.

In late afternoon, Ambi got into sea. Jiwan and I were messing about with the

plastic inflated lillo. I got out and went

to change. Ambi lay on lillo and jiwan lay atop her. I returned back after

changing within fifteen minutes.

There was no sign of Ambi and Jiwan. I looked around and to my horror realised

both were rapidly drifting out to sea.

Ambi was paddling the wrong way and waved me for help. I quickly changed back

into my costume and waded into the sea. I

shouted to her....you are paddling wrong way! By now she was out of earshot and

rapidly drifting out. She cannot swim

though Jiwan had arm floats. I only hoped she does not panic and if Jiwan falls

off he will drift away from her too! Two

miles out off the coast line the current is becomes stronger and waves are

large.

I swam towards them the situation was becoming hopeless. She was rapidly

drifting away now about two miles from

me..It was time to take a cool collected review of the situation. If I carried

out swimming towards them it was possible

it would leave me exhausted and none of us could summon help. I got also worried

that if I go into hypo then it would

leave three of us in distress in the sea without any hope of summoning help. So

I decided to Swim back and summon help.

There are no Life Guards on These Greek Beaches. My only hope lay with a man who

hired out motorised boats nearby or

finding some strong swimmers. I looked back and Ambi/Jiwan were rapidly drifting

off to the open sea.

As I came out, I saw three men about to gointo sea. I asked them for help

.....they were Italians and

did not understand a word I was saying. I shouted " Bambino Bambino " pointing

towards speck of lilo visible. They

immediately talked with each other and set out in a pincer move towards the

lillo. Middle swimmer went straight towards

the Lillo and others would grab the lillo from either side. I watched from the

beach and by now the commotion had

attracted attention of others who set out as well. The motorboat Guy got a motor

boat ready should the swimmers fail to

reach her. Though his main concern was to haggle with me about the price he

would charge for the hire of his motor

boats.

They were strong swimmers, reached the lillo, grabbed it and pushed it back to

the beach. It was such a hair raising

dangerous situation both had got into. I could have lost them both on vacation.

The Italians refused my offer of drink

and meal...and chriss crossed their chests....meaning thank God not us. I was so

grateful to these guys but

unfortunately due to the language barrier was unable to express my emotion and

gratitude. What did the woman have to say

about all this......Well she was visibly shaken.....but did manage to say... I

hope it will make you appreciate me more

in future! WOMEN.

Well......this called for a celebration....It could have destroyed life for ever

for me for loosing them both! Without

both life would have been meaningless and without purpose. I even allowed Ambi

to choose a place to eat of her choice.

If it had to be a salad for the night accompanied by mineral water.....Let it

Be.....

But to my great surprise....she choose....Meal at a Chinese Restaurant!

Yes......Genuine Chinese restaurant staffed by

Chinese chefs and Chinese waiters.....These Chinese get everywhere.....This

restaurant charges

3200drakmas - about £7 per person......eat as much as you can! Buffet style. It

was great ....One night she passed no

comments on my crafe of red wine! I suppose she appreciates me more NOW!

Mind you she did confess that she had not realised that she had drifted until

she heard me shout out. She only panicked

when she saw me change back to my costume wasting time and second time when she

saw me swimming back to the beach. All

the time she tells me she was worried sick about Jiwan and could not move to

position herself to paddle back as he would

have fallen off. Being a neonatal nurse, she works in emergency situations round

the clock with little premature babies

and in emergencies situations is very calm, cool and collected.....where as I am

the opposite. What a holiday nightmare?

Wow, what an experience! Thank God your family is safe. Seems that you

have much more than a paltry vacation to be thankful for.

Dear Karam,

What an amazing day! You really should turn your vacation adventures on this

incredible Greek island into a book!

We are grateful you are all safe and sound ...

Susie
