The directions say you are supposed to clean it every week or every day but I never do and have seldom had a problem. Once I did get a defective one and I took it back to the pharmacy. I would say if it squirts out the top it is defective. I had my inhaler in my purse next to a partially eaten package of trail mix and darn the inhaler wouldn't work .
