Guest guest
Hey Lizbeth - How can you lose? I learned about Splenda, not to worry about bruises from insulin shots, the importance of low carbs to my blood sugar, good recipes, other good advice from people who have been or are where I am now and now maybe less insulin coming our way! Ask and somebody out there will answer. - Pat New to list >> >> >>> >>> >>>Hi: >>> >>>Just wanted to say hi - this is my first posting on this list. >>> >>>I am looking forward to meeting you all. >>> >>>Lizbeth >>> >>> >>> >>> >>>---------------------------

Guest guest
Hi , I just found out I have diabetes too, on Nov 16 and I too have felt very very scared. I have a nice support group and that is helping and the folks on this list have been kind to me too. You are very lucky to have so much help here. I decided I am going to fight this disease. It was funny cause I found out I had diabetes after I had gone to Kaiser for a check up as I have begun aquacize and reducing my weight, as an aside I asked the dr to check my thyroid for me and low and behold he discovered the diabetes, since I had been eating low carbohydrate foods for several weeks I was already showing an improvement in my sugar counts. Anyway I feel it was a very good thing I was already on a food plan that works and already started excercising before the dr even found the diabetes. HOWEVER, I panicked and felt terribly scared at first, there are so many awful consequences of diabetes, it took alot of support for me to begin poking myself and reading my meter, now I am getting used to it. And that is just one part that scares me. So for me I know I must eat right, excercise everyday and take my glucophage. I do all these everyday. One thing is I keep forgetting to check my bg before my dinner, and this is the 4th time, does anyone have any way to remember to check before they eat???? Thanks and good luck , Aloha form Maui~ Jill New To List >From: kyangelgirl@... ( M) > >Hi, my name is aqnd I live in Kentucky. Guest guest
, starches like bread make blood glucose. I eat almost no wheat products, and manage on diet only, no medication. I eat rice, corn, potato, yam sparingly with dinner, I suggest you read your sugar an hour after a meal to find how it raises your sugars, read 2 hours after eating to see how well you are dealing with the sugar. I eat a lttlee at a time many times a day, so I don't go high or low, don't get hungry. \sam
Guest guest
My octor has me on a 1800 calorie a day diet. I am allowed 8 breads, 6 meats, 3 fruits, 3 vegetables and I'm not rael sure of the rest. It sure doesn't give me much to choose from. I have really no idea where to start. What are good small meals for me to eat. I'm new at this and have no idea what to do.
Guest guest
This looks like the standard ADA diet for diabetics (I had one doctor tell me that all he knew how to order on a diabetic diet was 1800 kcalories). Did he/she give you a copy of the exchange list booklet? Do you have access to a registered dietitian for counseling? Gail (I am a registered dietitian in real life) From: kyangelgirl@... Guest guest
In my experience, and those I write to, they get in control by stopping their bread exchanges. When you do you will have to reduce your medications too. Vegetables in salads and steamed with meals are a good start. I have a salad at noon. I eat fruit for my carbos for energy during the day. What you eat depends a lot on your constraints. if you are on a job with set schedule you have to manage your foods within that time constraint. I used to take a few bites of a ssandwich and wrap it up. Sam
Guest guest
Nope, I am on medicaid and they won't pay for counseling from a dietician for any reason in Kentucky. I have switched to all sugar free. My soda is diet as is any candy or gum I use. I have terrible dry mouth and I have to keep something to help that. I haven't touched a candy bar or a regular soda since Nov 4th when I found out. I was only a moderate sugar user anyway. It came in spells. I just have problems with my fruits and juices. I LOVE orange juice and was told I could have about 4 ozs at a time but it makes my sugar levels go up. i also love bananas and apples. How can I incorporate them into my diet and keep my sugar levels under control?
Guest guest
Apples and bananas are part of your fruit exchange. One small apple or 1/2 of a banana is a serving. If you read the archives on this list, you will find that many are following what is called low carb; that is, they find that starches like breads, cereals, rice, potatoes, corn (the starchy vegetables) tend to run their blood sugars up while limiting these brings tighter control. I think you are finding this out with the orange juice; even the " correct " portion of 4 ounces seems to increase blood sugars for you. You may do better with fruits with fiber (like apples, grapes, peaches, pears) rather than juices as the fiber in whole fruits frequently slows down the absorption rate of the food from your gut into your blood stream. I hope this is not too confusing. It is hard to do a diet instruction via the Internet. Perhaps other members can send along some sites on diabetes for you to familiarize yourself with. It's a shame that Medicaid won't pay for nutrition counseling. , are you overweight? Do you exercise? Most type II diabetics improve blood glucoses by losing weight (if needed) and exercising daily. Remember that the more weight you are carrying, the more insulin you need as fat stores make you resistant to your own insulin. Gail
Guest guest
, I must eat a banana a day, I have it sliced with other fruit. I use kiwi, mango, pear, cantaloupe. I eat about half a small dish at a time with vanilla yogurt for my dairy. I must eat a quart a day. I buy it in quarts I didn't find any small cups I cared for. I use the vanilla and put some sweetener on it. I want you to understand that starch is a long chain of sugar molecules, so you are a victim of the sugar myth. It is just another carbohydrate. Plants make carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water with sunlight. They are carbohydrates, such as sugar. Sam
Guest guest
, I used to have half an orange as a starter for the day, you can have the other half later. I used my meter to find out what could eat. I have eaten half an apple at one time. That may be a bit extreme, but my sugar results are good. Guest guest
, I start with a half grapefruit these days, later 2 eggs and some dry hard toast. Later I will have some grapes and sliced banana. Salad at lunch, more fruit during the day. Sam
Guest guest
Hi : I am on a similar diet to the one that your doctor gave you. If you can, ask to be referred to a dietitian. I went to the dietitian of my HMO, Kaiser and she gave me a diet similar to yours. I am on the 1800 calorie plan and have lost 48 pounds so far. I feel wonderful and my HbA1c on November 22 was 4.7, so it does work well for some people. A helpful hint might be for you to obtain the set of books from the American Diabetes Association called " Month of Meals. " These books, and there are several for different kinds of diets, show 28 days of meals with 28 choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as snacks and you can pick any breakfast, any lunch and any dinner and still have a balance meal. These books may also be available at your local bookstore or Amazon.com or other online bookstores. May be even cheaper than getting them from the ADA. If I can help in any way, please contact me either through the group or outside it. Erwin PS: There really is lots of variety on this diet. You just have to be creative. Guest guest
: My dietitian said to cross out fruit juices from the list she gave me. None, except to treat Hypoglycemia. An exception is Cranberry Juice Cocktail that has been sweetened with Splenda made by Ocean Spray. It is low in sugar. All of the other juices are high in sugar and have no fiber. Guest guest
Hi, this sure is an awful lot to take in and try to remember. I will do my best here though. As for my weight I am overweight. I have been quite a bit overweight since I was a child. I am at least 150 lbs over my ideal weight. I know I have lost some weight though. I really am trying. I only eat a very little beef or pork. I try to stick to poultry or fish. I have found my best meals to be tuna. My sugar stays down after I eat it. I am a veggie person too. As far as juices I like tomato juice. I drink it alot. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. I do enjoy my sweets but I have discovered sugar free fudgesickles and ice cream as well as jello and pudding. I put a small amount of whipped topping on it too. That is a GREAT dessert. When my sugar goes up to 400 it never stays up long. Usually just a few hours. I will check into the books you all suggested. I want to thank you all for your suggestions. Keep them coming as I need all the help I can get.
