It is a standard through all the lists on the internet not to use the all caps. With the newer mail programs of the last couple of years font size can not be changed to fit messages coming in so they are read better. When you use all caps and have your setting for 18pt or larger the message could only that three or four words per line and that also is very annoying as caps are usually larger and darker in color. There are software programs available to enlarge type and if you are visually impaired you should invest in these. All CAPS are very difficult to read and are not necessary. If my visually impaired student can type his papers and send me email in the normal manner anyone can. And this child reads his computer screen one letter at a time in 72pt print. And it is common on diabetes lists for some people to have difficulty seeing letters that aren't capitalized. If you have vision troubles, try larger fonts written in bold, if your email program doesn't allow that function, then write in caps <shrugs> ... to prevent getting chastized perhaps put something in your sig that says caps are necessary for you. It's ok to emphasise a word or line in capitals but use the CAPS lock button sparingly. Guest guest Posted May 11, 1999 Report Share Posted May 11, 1999 Phyl, Again... those of us who are still stuck (as I am at home) with the choice of an old teletype monitor style terminal that only does ASCII or webtv on a 13 inch TV because that is all I own may need to type in all caps. There are computers from the days of old that have no fonts... nor do they have the capability to enlarge the text. Believe me... on my old WYSE ANSI terminal... my girlfriend who is not on this list must type in all caps because of her poor vision. I have the luxury of having a nice e-mail system at work... but it has not always been like this. Tolerance is the key word... not everyone's onramp to the internet is a super highway... some still get by with the gravel one lane road. As far as asking for a remedy... you never asked... you jumped down that person's throat very rudely, without finding out the problems. Our rules should not always be as strict as they are outside of this list because netiquette rules are generalized and do not always have to be followed. I was appalled at what went on between some of you and Dawn who is unfortunate enough to also have Cerebral Palsy. Would a little understanding hurt so much? I was not going to get involved but I also have multiple illnesses and constant problems with my eyes. I am on webtv and can make the font size larger only when sending an email, not when receiving one. Our large setting on email is still small. I had planned to stay out of this flame war and quietly unsub because those involved were very cruel. But I needed to have my say and if this continues, I have no interest in being part of the group. I also need support, kindness, understanding and information and because stress is so bad for all of us, I, for one do not intend to put up with this cruelty and lack of understanding. I simply sent you the info that it is indeed considered as shouting. Also, I noted that on many diabetes lists there ARE people who write in caps because of their poor vision. There is nothing wrong with that but I did suggest that you make a signature that appears on the bottom of all your emails stating that fact since on an email list there are many new people coming in every day and they don't know why you are typing in caps - they only know it seems you are shouting . Also, you wrote stating how you were laughing at people's concerns on this subject. Do you not think that is rude? Lastly, I don't see how your typing in caps is helpful. Our rules should not always be as strict as they are outside of this list because netiquette rules are generalized and do not always have to be followed. I was appalled at what went on between some of you and Dawn who is unfortunate enough to also have Cerebral Palsy. Would a little understanding hurt so much? I was not going to get involved but I also have multiple illnesses and constant problems with my eyes. I am on webtv and can make the font size larger only when sending an email, not when receiving one. Our large setting on email is still small. I had planned to stay out of this flame war and quietly unsub because those involved were very cruel. But I needed to have my say and if this continues, I have no interest in being part of the group. I also need support, kindness, understanding and information and because stress is so bad for all of us, I, for one do not intend to put up with this cruelty and lack of understanding.
