Dear " Meenie "

Really had thoughts of snitching some sweets today when I went

shopping, but remembered the challenge. It was really rough!! I've had

some severe stress and candy is usually my " reward " for stresses. A bad

choice!

Congratulations to all of the " challengers " staying on task. Keep up

the good work!

A question, does anyone know, do strawberries raise Bg a lot or is it

just me???

The challenge is all about changing habits. It ends in 3 weeks.

Just list your name and what things you'd like to try to help yourself

to do to help fight the diabetes in the next 3 weeks.

Day three, and all is well! I have managed to drink all of my water every

day since Tuesday, and have stayed below my allotted 150 carbs. My readings

have been great, too. My highest reading was 124.

Mike -

Meenie started this (three cheers!) The premise is that it takes 21 days to

start a new habit or break an old one. We decided to start together on July

6, and choose two things we wanted to change. I have pledged to drink 64 oz

of water daily and to stay within my carb allowance. We then let each other

know how we are doing. Want to join us? Just email the list with your

challenges!

>>I've had some severe stress and candy is usually my " reward " for stresses.

,

This is also the way I use to handle it. Hear the word use to, have been choc

free for 4 days now. Actually sugar free. You

know I had a terrible headache all day yesterday it may have been sugar and choc

withdrawals. <smile>

On the subject of heat, it really bothers me. Always has just worst now. I

never wear a cold in winter expect if there is 5-6

inches of snow on the ground which doesn't happen a lot in TN. But I can't take

the heat it makes me sick if I get too hot.

My challenge:

1) no sweets or choc

2) walk more --- this will be hard, it's too hot outside and I live in the

country and only go to town 2-3 times a month.

Yes, I am on meds. Glucophage 850mg with breakfast and dinner, and glipizide

5mg with dinner.

My mom called yesterday, she just had her A1C done, it was 6.7!!! She has

been diabetic and in denial for 6 or 7 years, only went into treatment in

December. She has lost 30 pounds. She is on Glucophage 500mg with breakfast

and dinner. I am so proud of her!!!

I usually dip them in Equal Spoonful. It doesn't affect my levels. I just

ordered some Splenda, and I should get it today. I can't wait to try it.

Hi :)

BRAVO to you for perservering and not getting into that candy!!! It takes a

lot of will power , trust me I know ! :)

As to the strawberries, fruit does have natural sugar and carbohydrates. On

Atkins we aren't allowed any fruit on the two week induction period because

of the carb content (sugar is a carb also). After that we may raise our

carb intake by 5 grams at a time to see how it affects our loss rate. When

we stop losing we drop back by 5 grams and keep at that level.

I would suggest that you use strawberries and other fruits sparingly due to

their high sugar and carbo content. Once you have your bg's in line you may

be able to be more liberal with them - that will be one of those things you

will have to test and see.

Great going on the challenge!! Keep up the great work :)

Have you tried splenda? You can sprinkle it right on fruits and things and

it tastes just like sugar .. mmmm

If you can handle the fruit alone, splenda doesn't affect your bg's :D

Hi Deborah :)

Yep, our bodies become addicted to sugars and carbs (and caffeine) and when

we go off these things there is usually a 3-4 day period when we feel pretty

badly, but the good news is, you then start feeling great! :)

Thats how it is on Atkins, when you go on induction and cut your carbs down

to 20 or less a day, no sugar and no caffeine. You feel bad the first 3-4

days, headache especially, then on the 4th or 5th day you wake up feeling

wonderful! You finally have all that stuff out of your system and your body

is just rejoicing! :)

I don't like the heat either. I can't go out and sit in the sun like some

folks do, I get sick also. I wonder if its a dehydration thing? Now that

I've been low carbing, part of the package is of course, drinking all that

extra water, and I haven't minded the heat as much. (as in, haven't felt

sick from it - still don't LIKE it lol)

I added you to the challenge list :) You GO girl.

Part of my challenge was to walk also, but its been so hot here that i've

been doing exercise videos instead (did Mall wall one day).

Strawberries have a glycemic index of only 32, so while they ARE a

carbohydrate, it's strange that so few of them would affect your BG so

dramatically.

Cherries have a GI of 22, grapes 43. Do you get the same reaction with them?

If not, suspect an allergy to the strawberrries perhaps. Also, ripe berries

contain a sweet sugar alcohol called sorbitol, also mannitol and xylitol.

They contain 4 calories per gram, and are absorbed slowly and metabolized

like fructose. If you have enough insulin, the fructose will be stored as

glycogen in the liver. If there is not enough insulin, the fructose can

cause a rise in plasma glucose. I'm not aware of how the amounts vary from

berry to berry, but ripe cherries have a lot of it...so if THEY don't affect

you the same way strawberries do, again, perhaps you're allergic and the

stress reaction your body has when you consume them results in a BG spike.

I'll keep looking for more info.

None so far. She does, however have high pressure in her eyes. Not glaucoma

yet, and she is getting treatment for the pressure. She was around 30 in

both eyes, now she's down under 25 in both.
