At what temperature is it a good idea to turn on the furnace?

I have a love/fear relationship with it. After a long time and work,

I am okay with it most of the time. Friendly, even. I can drain and

re-fill the boiler with no problems.

But now I find I am stuck somehow. The furnace hasn't been on since

last winter, and I have some kind of reluctance going on that makes

me worry about what will happen when I turn it on for the first time

this season. (Translation: I am afraid it will blow up.)

There are two cats to consider, also. They have fur, of course, but

they do like heat. When I go to bed, they each colonize one of the

two " bed buddies " I use in addition to flannel sheets, three

blankets, and a quilted spread.
