Helena,

If I had a dime for every time I said why, why oh lord WHY? I could by a

new clothes. :) Your body is getting used to all new tastes, textures and

foreign foods that under the old life we would have never eaten. I guess I

would have to ask, are you eating too quickly, drinking to fast. If you

seem to have trouble w/ Jell-O , the sf pops, and drinks, stick w/chicken,

beef broth and just make sure everything is pureed really really good. Your

mind heals faster than the body, and you are having that hibernation

syndrome, its all part of the process. That's why you have us. :) Man I

wanted to rip someone's hair out if I couldn't get the heck out of this

house, four walls, ceiling, floor and Oh my cob webs...... mmmmmm wonder if

I could clean, NO I can't do that either, hmmmm wonder if I could...... Nope

No can do.... well craps now what? READ A BOOK, Cross word puzzle, watch

life time channel, rent movies, start your journal, start a web page, if you

don't know how good time to start, have someone drive you to a mall, drop

you off and pick you up in an hour, you can walk a little, rest a little,

walk a little, rest a little, sip water through the whole time. Its hard

but bet you me, it does get better girlfriend!

Hang in there!!

Love,

Theresa

is there anything I can eat that doesn't have sugar substitute in it? that

seems to make me feel worse. I have tried Jell-O, frozen pops but after I

tummy but I promise it does get better . I wasn't sure till around four weeks

and then I thought heck yes I can do this so be patient Hon and give your body

time to heal and things will start getting better two weeks post op and then

each day will get better . If the sugars bother you it might be best to stick

with plain on H2o . I am drinking tons trying to lose more weight I think I am

too slow but at least the scale is going down and NOT UP !

OH Ava you are so right I am seven weeks and Geesssssss sometimes my breath is

horrible I brush brush brush and mouth wash and SF mints and floss Glad to lose

the fat but wish the bad breath was not part of the exchange

Re: Help

HELENA--Of course you feel lousy, hon; you've just had major surgery

and you're completely changing around your entire eating system! Your

body's telling you that that makes it cranky!

Try drinking--sipping--water; I think you're drinking the flavored

drinks a little too fast because they taste good. Try upping your

protein too, if you can in case your body is hungry for more. Right

now, with no/few carbs, you'll be going into ketosis, I think, as

your body burns up all that fat. Ketosis DOES put a bad taste in our

mouths, so brush and floss more frequently. Drinking lots of water

helps; artificial sweetener always put a bad taste in my mouth too!

Yes, now is the time we most frequently regret our decision. We

remember how it felt pre op and now, post op, we don't think we'll

ever feel normal again like that. Not true, sweetheart! You'll be

healing for about 4-6 weeks; you'll be trying out different foods and

our new way of eating for maybe another month or so. After that,

you'll feel more and more normal. One day--maybe 3 mo./6 mo./surely

after that, you'll realize that you feel just like you did before

your operation.

Honest, things will get better! I am sending you my info sheet on the

Hibernation Syndrome in case you don't have it. If you do have it,

read it again1 Write in often, hon, we're concerned about ya!

We actually think my staple line started disrupting in the hospital after my

first surgery before I was released, and my marginal ulcer also began at that

time, just wasnt discovered for 4 months, mostly due to the surgeon and his

staff not taking my complaints seriously enough.

My marginal ulcer perforated, eroded to the back side of my liver and caused

me to have peritonitis, plus helping my staple line to completely unzip..

This may could have been prevented if treated with proper medication at the

earliest symptoms..

So, yes, marginal ulcers can occur at 9 days post op or even sooner..

They routinely put us on that after surgery nowadays here. 30 days for some, 60

days for others. I just stayed on for life.

Lou,

You will have my prayers. If it's any help I think most of us went through

wondering the same things. I did. But ya know. now that I'm over a year out and

down 113#. Food is not an issue. Yea I have cravings and I do eat things I

shouldn't and I usually pay for it. But food is no longer my life. My life is my

life and food is an after thought.

You won't fail! You can't God won't let you. The surgery won't let you. This

is your time to restart your life. A second chance to make right some of the

wrong chances that we've made over the years. I was forced to deal with my

issues that cause me to over eat. I can't turn to food any more so I don't have

a choice but to deal with my life weather I want to or not.

You have our love and our support. You will do fine. May God Bless you and

Give you the peace to calm yourself before your surgery. Love Dawn

Help

I've been reading the posts for a long time. Thank you all for sharing your

stories and questions. Now , I need to ask for help and prayers. My surgery

is scheduled for Thursday,March 14. It's been a long road. Over a year and a

half of doctors, tests, medifast and etc. My problem is my blood pressure is

high and if it doesn't get under control by next week they may cancel on me.

I'm taking my medicine and finally my doctor here is calling in something

new today and I'm praying it does the trick. This time before surgery I have

so many things to do and visits to hospitals and doctor and wonderful enemas

to take. I'm asking that on my surgery day, would you please pray for God to

bless the doctors and me with a safe surgery . I keep wondering about the

pain and what if I fail. What if I don't lose a lot of weight? What if I can

never eat normal food again? I'm praying that this surgery will help me to

get off of a lot of the medicines I take and that I can become healthier and

more active. But yes, I'm also hoping that down the road I can eat normal

food in small portions. I'll never be thin or probably not normal weight but

just to be in the hundreds would be wonderful. I'm short 5'1 " and at my

highest was 365. I have lost hundreds of pounds only to put them back on and

more. I'm hoping this time , the weight won't come back on. I was dieting

again before and while I was on this wait list. Our doctor puts you on

medifast for a month before surgery. So as of now I'm 300 pounds. Sorry, I'm

rambling nervous and want support. Thank you. Lou

Hi,

I don't have any concrete advice for you... sorry. I have the same

things happen to me. All I do is stretch out and massage the area until

I get the feeling back. Have you seen your doctor about it?

Oh Dash,

I hope you're felling better soon. I can sure relate to the back acting

up. I've been sitting at the computer a little too long and I'm kind've

avoiding the pain that will come with the attempt at standing up. Some

days I wish I could apply WD-40 to all my rusting parts. Need some

muscle strength to get me up... ugggh. Here goes nothing.

neddles in my hands and feet, and also feel faint at all times

PLEASE HELP ME

1. While it is wonderful to share our experiences with everyone on the list as

to what treatments do and don't work for us, pls always check with your dr.

Some treatments are dangerous when given along with other meds as well as to

certain health conditions or just dangerous in general.

2. If you are in a difficult situation (doesn't matter what it is) pls don't

be afraid to ask for help. It is the first step to trying to make that

situation better.

Have a nice day everyone.

Kathy,

That's what I was thinking. Is this a child? Those drugs are addictive.

That's probably why Medicaid denied the claim.

I'm not brushing you off at all, but not only because I have no experience

with Medicaid, but because you really should speak to the prescribing doctor

about this problem. " They " have probably run into this issue before and it

may be that they just need to send in documentation of her medical problems.

On a side note - I had no idea they prescribed such heavy-duty drugs for

toddlers. None of the anti-seizure meds or lighter narcotics worked?

My

daughter had her 4th detethering surgery last Feb. was a year ago.

Since that time her symptoms have not improved at all and in fact, now

she has bladder and incontinence issues. Her pain has been managed for

the past year with the use of oxycodone and oxycontin. Recently her

insurance (medicaid) has denied and said they will no longer pay for

these meds. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the

resolution?

Kathy,

my daughter is 27 years old and has been on all kinds of things.  she is

tethered now and has been for a rigth good while.  the dr says since the last

surgery didn't help there was no point in putting her through it again unless we

see nuerological decline.  i really feel that they need to look at something

more long term for her pain management...she can't stay on these drugs

forever.  the dr's office has really been a big help with trying to get this

approved and is just as frustrated as she is about the whole thing.  i can't

believe that her records don't speak for themselves.  they are trying her on a

new long acting morphine.  she says it doesn't help much, but they can increase

the dosage, so we will just keep trying.

thanks,

livvie

Hi

You are (possibly) not expecting too much to ask him to recognize the warning

signs of these events and do some kind of intervention.

YOu are, however, expecting it too soon, too easily and expecting him to do it

on his own, as if all you have to do is tell him what is expected and he should

be able to say " of course, that's what my problem is " and change. That so isn't

going to fly. He is not currently in a place he can recognize, let alone

control these feelings. He probably does not have enough internal awareness to

know that these--things-- that swirl inside *are* feelings, let alone know he

has power over them. Many Aspies see feelings as mysterious external weather or

oceans that come out of no where, wash over them involuntarily, drag and pull at

them while they swirl helplessly in the storm. There is no recognition that

they, themselves, generate this flood and can influence its course. Someone

outside of him has to teach him. The following assumes the behavioral episodes

are not a form of temporal lobe seizure.

someone has to recognize the approaching storm externally, point it out to him

while it is still early enough to pay attention, and teach him how to handle it

successfully.

I recommend contacting his school or therapist and ask for a behavioral

intervention plan to go over with you how to do this.

You have to observe him, recognize the physical and emotional triggers,

recognize the beginning of a buildup, stop it early enough to point it out to

him, emotionally defuse it, intellectualize it, give him a tool to manipulate it

and then a way to resolve it. All while remaining impartial and nonjudgemental

yourself. This takes time in the best of circumstances, months to years.

I don't see this happening easily two days a week easily, especially when it

will actively be undermined, but someone has to try--you are right, he will get

into trouble, and puberty is coming. It *will get worse* and he will be bigger

and stronger. That is why you must get the school and therapist on board.

Possibly legal action against mom if it is the opinion that this is harming your

stepson.

Good luck

> Anyone give me a clue or some inspiration?

> Its a long story but just for now, I have a step son who is diagnosed with AS.

His father, my partner is self diagnosed, Stepson is 14 and only diagnosed 6

months ago. His mother refuses to acknowledge anything about him or his

behaviour, has made little effort in his parenting from and early age, just left

him to it. Little discipline, no rules. easier for her to let him rant and

rave. She does little if nothing to accomodate for his AS. Anyways. In His home

environment he is shouted at alot of the time,no one can say anything to him at

all without him taking it as criticism. He has a meltdown like a three year old,

if he feels criticised. Am I and his father expecting to much of him to want him

to catch these meltdowns before they occur? sHOULD WE BE ABLE TO EXPECT HIM TO

MANAGE THIS?as I say he is 14 but very immature.I would put him at a 10 year

old. I fear he will get himself into lots more trouble if he can't control this

stuff. He is already getting into trouble at school. He does not show a high HQ

in relation to his academic ability, but has all the other AS traits. He repeats

himself alot, has special subjects that he bores people with,Logical responses,

no idea of personal space for others. Every time he comes to us, bi-weekly it is

constant tension, my own partner becomes overwhelmed. Any suggestions?
