Aubrie's hearing now is testing in the 25-30db range unaided in the booth with both ears, so I guess that's why we're wondering about the benefit of the aids. Michele The difficulty with hearing tests is that it is all pure tone testing in that the child is given pure tones of sound to respond to. This will show threshold levels, but it is difficult to say if what the child is hearing is clear. With Talisa, she has a profound loss, but aided pushes it into the lower limits of the speech range, therefore aided she is able to hear and respond to environmental sounds. BUT, on CAT scan there are gross anomalies within the middle and inner ear, therefore what I make of this is that the quality or usefullness of the sound Talisa receives is poor.She hears and responds to sound, with hearing aids in, but its value for developing language appears limited. She says two words-- Mum and Shutup, mmmmmmmm. We chose to sign to Talsia at an early age and has a large receptive and expressive vacabulary. Neat idea, esp. for traffic, etc. I must ask Kennedy's hearing teacher about them sometime. Guest guest Posted September 26, 1999 Report Share Posted September 26, 1999 Jackie & Warwick- I'm just curious and trying to understand more about all of this. Does Talisa respond to your spoken language? Aubrie follows spoken commands, signs what she overhears me saying in coversations, and responds appropriately to songs and TV. So it seems like she's hearing quite well, altho we don't know how clear and accurate her hearing is. We haven't tested with similar sounding words to see if she can discriminate. This is all so very fascinating. I got a cassette tape that is supposed to illustrate what different hearing impairments sound like. I haven't had time to listen to it yet. Until recently, I hadn't realized that a hearing aid will amplify everything. I had pictured it just filling in the missing speech sounds. Now I realize that the stuff already heard will be louder than usual with the missing stuff added on softer. I can't remember who described our kids recently as having " altered " speech, hearing, vision, etc... I think it's a wonderful way to describe what it must be like for our kids. It's helped me to think of things that way especially with the hearing. Now I see that even with an aid, Aubrie's hearing will never be " fixed " to what mine is. She will always hear things a bit differently or altered. Sorry to ramble. Sometimes " talking " things out with you guys helps to clarify and understand.
