Guest guest Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 They do on the Portfolio if you check pubmed but I haven't seen any on South Beach.. Check Nutrition at my site: Nutrition.teach-nology.com Ortiz, RD nrord@... The 12-step chocoholics program: NEVER BE MORE THAN 12 STEPS AWAY FROM CHOCOLATE! MD conversation I spoke with a family practice MD. He had just attended some conference. He quoted that chronic diseases, DM, Heart, HTN, only 7% of the pt population are clinically within therapuetic guidelines. He said he was going to change his stats in his practice. So of course I offered to be assistance. He said he's going to do it with meds, because long term studies show diets don't work. I brought up the profolio diet. And he countered with the sout beach. So my question to the group is do we have evidence to counter this statement? I'll check out the evidence based library on ADA, but thought I tapped in this knoweldge also. Guest guest Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 Another thought: Both should be done together either way...was his point that he was going to ignore the diet (like my dad who says he doesn't need to change his diet since he takes meds - he is a healthy 82 so why bother arguing) Check Nutrition at my site: Nutrition.teach-nology.com Ortiz, RD nrord@... Guest guest Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 Hi Kathy, I realize you are looking for evidence for portfolio diet, but regarding the other side of the issue I have a 37-page point-counterpoint review of The South Beach Diet if you would like to review it and possibly pass along to your doc. I think he will be surprised about what the book itself really says (especially if he has not read it?), and perhaps he would think twice before he recommends it. I know I was. And I know you are not alone! I have 14 of the 37-page review up on my website (www.newlifeforhealth.com). I anticipate even more requests for the full review than my response regarding Eat Right 4 Your Type elicited from this list. I will tell you that as a single " unemployed " mom who went through " a divorce for the books " in the last 2 years and just had to relocate from Colorado (where my business was thriving) to New York (starting all over again) with my 3 boys I can't afford to send a lot of people the CD book reviews. At the end of the website article there is info on ordering the Diet Book Reviews CD for $15, however, if anyone is interested in that the address is wrong and I have not been had time to change it. You can contact me if you are interested and I will give correct address. Good luck! Diane Preves, M.S., R.D. N.E.W.
