, thank you for your words. I think I miss the exercise part of it. Actually

I hasn't done any kind of exercise

since I was diagnosed besides walking for about 15 minutes each day. Just diet.

So maybe I should start controlling that body, and not that body controlling me.

And you're right, when we succeed, it feels great and

we get more energy.

I'm amazed at your results since January by NOT exercising.. I read in the ADA

book that T-2's should limit their exercise to 40 minutes...so I do 38 at 4.3

mph...which is as fast as I can go for that long. I work up a

sweat (while watching my trusty tv) but if I stop exercising I'd stop losing.

Maybe you can increase the time and the speed a bit.??

Today, when I came home from school, I thought of starting to walk from my home

to the railroad and back again, when I return, instead of taking the bus. It

will give me appx one hours of walking each day and may

help me loose some more weight. Thank you for the tips. I have thought alot

about this.

Sounds great.. It'll be interesting to see what the extra walking does to your

Congrats Merry!!! I hope you'll feel your energy levels soar as you shed those

pesky pounds! My wife and I were out for our walk last night, and she was having

trouble keeping up with me! That's a switch! I've only lost 17 lbs so far, but

feel SO much better already! Keep up the good work!

Hi Gail,

The response by Susie, which follows this, was excellent.

I'm certain that a minimum of 10 lbs has been water, as I had severe leg

swelling prior to restricting my carbs. In fact, it was this swelling and pain

associated with it that led me to the ER in Jan. My GP noticed a few weeks later

that each time I went to the ER my BGs were over 200. I'm not quite sure why the

ER DRs never mentioned it to me!

Anyway, here's the scoop.... I am a big guy, 6'2 " tall, weight 280 to start

with. Severely water-logged. I have been keeping my carbs at a minuscule 5 grams

a day during this phase of my diet. Waahhhhh! I really miss my bread! I still

eat at Mcs all the time, but just pull the muffin off my Egg McMuffins or

the bread off my Grilled Chicken Sandwich. I really hate doing that, but I'd

rather waste it than waist it!

I mention my size because the larger a person is, the higher the number of

calories burned " just maintaining. " I have eaten till I was full at each meal. I

had a few " rough " days for the first 4-5 days. But once I got past that point, I

haven't been nearly as hungry as I was when I was chowing down the carbs like

crazy. I used to eat a Grilled Chicken sandwich, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese,

a Super-Sized fry and still be starving. It was ridiculous! I was always

watching every one else eat, hoping they'd leave a few fries for me!!! (my own

family of course - not the strangers in McD's!)

I'm sure my caloric intake is down, because I'm not eating the carbs. I am

eating more protein and my diet already had plenty of fat in it! Didn't need to

*add* anymore!

Drinking at least a gallon of water a day - this is not a joke - I thought DMII

made me thirsty! HAH! Not like being in ketosis!

Have been walking for 40 minutes every other night. Have been doing that for

about a month now.

So... whether it is water or fat, I needed to lose both. I'm in it for the long

haul so I'll take it as it comes. Tomorrow is my wife's Birthday, so I plan to

*break* my diet for a piece of b'day cake. Such is life :o) !

Rick, that was a nice post! I too don't understand why we have the ADA

spending (our dues) money to " educate the public about diabetes " when the

people who treat us and test us either don't know or don't realize we are

diabetic! It still bowls me over how little diabetics are told about their

own disease. That extra fluid was just dead weight for your heart to drag

around, and it squeezes on your internal organs, including your heart. It

sounds like you have a good understanding of what is going on, and that you

have the situation well in hand.

Dear Merry,

I know that you are doing wonderfully and please, keep up the good work.

I myself being a professional dieter know that there is a letdown a few

weeks into the weight loss program. At first, it is all new and exciting

but about 6 weeks down the road, you feel sort of deprived of all the

goodies that you once could eat. Now, for you and me and the other

members of this list, there is no choice and we must follow an eating

program. I am trying to get used to it also and am having ups and downs

with eating and exercise. Sometimes I just don't feel like it and want

to have my old comfort foods back. Unfortunately, that is not an option

for us anymore and can have devastating results.

Keep your chin up. We are all in the same boat and have to lean on each

other for support. We can do it and get those numbers down. You are

doing the right thing and do not let it get to you.

(no meds-just diet and exercise)

Dear ,

Thanks for the boost, I guess I was just having a bad day. Do you ever

have days where you just don't feel like eating? This last week I had a

couple of days that I just wasn't hungry at all. I made myself eat to keep

things on track. This list is a God sent to me.....Thanks everyone

Bill, I visited the Healthy Exchanges site an in the message boards Search

and still came up empty. So I went to the chatroom to ask what it was about

and I don't think anyone else was there. Can you offer a synopsis of how the

Suse,

Sometimes we just type carbo in the messageboard. Be sure you're in the

reader recipe exchange message board.

All of the Healthy Exchanges cookbooks list the diabetic exchanges and the

nutritional information. Look for " Cooking Healthy With A Man In Mind " or

" Cooking Healthy With the Kids In Mind " among others. There is also " Desert

Every Night " which also list all the nutritional information. Look at the

message boards on the website. Below is just one of the recipes in the

book. I like them all.

From " Cooking Healthy With a Man in Mind " , page 187

Cabbage Patch Meat Loaf

1 pound ground 90% lean turkey or beef

6 Tablespoons dried fine bread crumbs

1 1/2 cups purchased coleslaw mix

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper

1/4 teaspoon dried minced garlic

2/3 cup Heinz Light Harvest or Healthy Choice ketchup

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9-by-5 inch loaf pan with

butter-flavored cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine meat, bread crumbs,

coleslaw mix, green pepper, garlic, and 1/3 cup ketchup. mx well using

hands. Pat mixture into prepaired loaf pan. Bake 45 minutes. Spread

remaining 1/3 cup ketchup over top and continue baking 15 minutes. Place

loaf pan on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Cut into six servings.

150 calories, 6 gm Fat, 14 gm Protein, 10 gm Carbohydrate, 332 mg Sodium, 1

gm Fiber

Diabetic: meat, 1/ Starch
