Guest guest
I'm no asthma expert, but I'm very well-versed in " my doctor isn't listening to me " , and I think you may be suffering from that. The cure is radical, and involves replacing the faulty doctor. The reason I say that... okay, maybe it's not asthma, but then, WHAT IS IT??? Not being able to breathe sure seems like a problem to me, and deserves a solution of some sort. In the meantime, my two cents' worth: write down anything you might want to say to someone while you can't breathe, things like " hit me on the back " and " Call 9-1-1 NOW " , and have them handy to point at if it becomes necessary. This has been going on since I was about 15 yrs old and long before I started smoking. What happens is that all of the sudden I just cannot get any breath! Usually I sorta bend over and cough cough cough and try to not panic and draw in a breath and cough cough cough and over again till finally my airway just finally seems to opens right up when i'm finally able to get a good breath in. I feel like i'm choking! But last night I couldn't even get enough air to cough. I was so scared like i've never been before! I ran in the living room and just wanted dad to hit me on the back or something but I just couldn't get him to understand me. I was starting to feel kinda weird and tingly and then finally my airway just loosened up when I enough of a breath and boy I was shaking and my heart was just racing. I coughed and coughed after and some wheezing after as well. Some times I wake up out of a seemingly sound sleep and have this happen too. And they are usually without warning.I've told my doctor about this a few different times through out the years but he didn't think it was asthma. What do you guys think? This was absolutely the worst one of what ever this was!!! I don't have them often thank god.It really scared my son too and my dad. My poor baby.Any insight or advice would be much appreciated! Thank you so very much!------------------------------------
Guest guest
, I'm a as well, LOL. You need to find a doctor who will listen to you. I'm no doctor at all but that sounds like a major bronchospasm. I've had a few and they're no fun. The bronchi in your lungs tighten up and spasm and it's hard to breathe when that happens. It could be asthma. Keep trying doctors till one listens. Don't give up. Do you still smoke? I'm going to be frank and blunt here--QUIT!!! I promise you that once smoking related asthma gets started, quitting smoking is necessary. It may even stop the asthma in it's tracks. I wish mine would stop, but a 26 year smoking habit has taken its toll on my battered lungs. I quit 10 years ago and do well most of the time, but I do still have problems at times. Guest guest
Hi , welcome. I have severe asthma and severe VCD (vocal cord dysfunction) and what you are describing sounds very much like VCD. You may have some mild asthma with it. You need to see a speech pathologist and be tested for VCD. From my viewpoint, VCD or asthma either way you are not getting air and need to be diagnosed and treated. You may also want to make an appointment with an asthma specialist who will order some specialized breathing tests to determine if there is asthma there. Guest guest
Thank you all so very much and for being so nice too! I know I really need to quit smoking and i've tried many times and I will again. And hope the next time is successful! I actually feel fine and normal now and I felt fine right before it happened too. And like I said though this has been happening since I was probably about 15 and didn't start smoking for another 10yrs or so. But when it starts it's almost like something has gone down the wrong pipe, Hope you know what I meant there. And so kinda like i'm choking. I actually haven't said anything to my doc for many years now. I was in a marriage and the husband didn't like docs and never wanted to give me money to let me go see a doc. Now i'm finally divorced and can go when our new ins cards finally come. The x has finally got us (our 8 yr old son and I)new ins! I think our deductable will be much cheaper this time thank goodness as now i'm a stay and home single mom most of the year and have just a seasonal job during fall harvest time every year. But last night scared me the most ever!!!!! Thanks again and it's very nice to meet you all! > > This has been going on since I was about 15 yrs old and long before I started smoking. > > > >What happens is that all of the sudden I just cannot get any breath! Guest guest
I also do have acid reflux and probably about 10 year ago went in and had to drink that chalky stuff and have tests done and they sait I had acid reflux and perscribed prevacid which was wonderful! Then it got to expensive for us when my work ins ran out and the x husbands ins didn't cover prescriptions so I tried all the over the counter stuff with no luck until prilosec came out and it works great! Sorry I forgot to mention that earlier. I don't know if that offers anymore help. But if I had asthma would the doctor have picked up on it then when I was diagnosed with acid reflux? I will also get together with my dad and son and if I ever think i'm really bad i'll give the call 911 signal that i'll show them. It's scary to even have to think about that. Thanks again > > This has been going on since I was about 15 yrs old and long before I started smoking. > > > >What happens is that all of the sudden I just cannot get any breath! Guest guest
I was going to say much of the same thing. When you can't breathe, nothing else matters. And that is what "we" / 911 are there for. To help you when you need us, even if it turns out that you are breathing better when "we" arrive, we are always willing to listen to your lungs and at least put your mind at ease, or take you into the hospital so they can figure out what is going on. The number one killers in America is DENIAL... asthma, heart attacks, strokes, etc. The #1 reason people die from these conditions is because they want to believe that "it isn't happening to me". So next time it happens to you, call for help!!! That is what 911 is for. And yes, I think you need a new doctor too. When I was growing up my primary care doctor said I didn't have asthma, or anything really wrong with me, just that I needed to see a counselor because obviously I had something mentally wrong with me... depression, hypochondria, whatever... turns out I do have asthma, some nasty allergies, and now a bunch of other stuff too, but that is beside the point. Doctors are human too, and although they don't think so, they ARE WRONG sometimes too! Good Luck!!
