have a list to recommend for a friend of mine that needs a support

group. She is dealing with depression, was given a script and I am

trying really hard to get her the help she needs so she won't start

the meds. Anyone have a Yahoo Group to recommend? Also what would

you recommend she take for supplements to boost her natural

seratonin levels?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Terri

Thanks, Cheryl. I was just going to look for something I could post to refute the "5-HTP" theory. After taking Paxil many years ago, I did lots of research into 5-HTP and was frightened enough by the data to NOT take it. Although it is derived from the griffonia plant it does NOT come without risk, and that risk can be a potentially deadly blood disorder. They don't tell us that in a healthfood store. When it's prescribed in Europe for depressive disorders, it's also prescribed with another medication (can't remember the name right now) to minimize any problems. We have to get out of this mode of thinking that just because something supposedly boosts serotonin that it isn't hazardous!!!!

Yes there is a natural herb medication that is not harmfull and deals with depression or helps anyone safely with the blues. It is 5-HTPHere is where a lot of people get into serious trouble. , who is the list owner and a specialist in psychotropic drug recovery, does NOT recommend 5-HTP. The very notion that elevating serotonin levels is necessary is one of the biggest frauds ever perpetrated. There ARE in fact side effects to 5-HTP, and this drug should NOT be taken lightly. It is not simply a harmless amino acid precursor and can cause a lot of side effects. In fact, in Europe, this drug is only prescribed with an accompanying medication because taking 5-HTP has some risks for causing a particular blood disorder. Please do not recommend this kind of supplement so indiscriminately. It's not all that it's cracked up to be. And you could actually cause someone to become much worse than they already are. When returns on Tuesday, I'm sure she will have some more appropriate recommendations, but I can guarantee you that 5-HTP will not be one of them. There are many recommendations in the FILES section that you can refer to. Thanks.

Glitter

Out of interest, would you have any idea what it is that is recommended in Europe to take in conjunction with 5HTP? I'd be glad to know for my own reference.

Thanks

Mo

I can't remember the name of the pharmaceutical. And I've long since thrown out that research. I suppose you could Google it and type in 5-HTP+blood disorder. If I have time later, I'll see what I can dig up, but this is definitely one "supplement" that should not be used indiscriminately.

L-Theanine, GABA, 5-HTP

Glitter,

I found this earlier post from regarding 5-HTP GABA and L-

Theanine...thought it might be helpful...

Blessings~~

Cheryl

** Too unpredictable. They work differently in everyone. I'd suggest

magnesium, 400 mg. 2x a day alternating with calcium, 1000 mg. 2xa

day.

Also, as needed, Aconitum Napellus 30C for panic attacks, and

homeopathic

comnbination remedies from www.homeopathyovernight.com called " Calm "

and

" Sleep " . Passionflower herbal tincture works well, too.
