I never heard of stress/tension headaches causing bluryness/blindness. According to the latest research I've seen, any headache that bad is a migraine. There are treatments for migraines, ranging from life changes (changes in diet, changes in schedule, changes in activities, changes in environment) to medications. Some of the medications are taken all the time, to prevent a migraine from occurring. Others are taken at first sign of a migraine onset. Different medications work (or don't work) for different people. On the other hand, other things can cause head pain and eye problems. Tumors (even benign ones) in the brain, for example. Possibly some medications (for some people). There may be eye conditions that cause such symptoms. Definitely sounds like something for which he should be seen by a knowledgeable doctor who is willing to work with your son to find out what's going on. Make sure you check him for allergies and sinus as well--my stepdaughter was getting blinding, migraine like headaches that gave her vision effects and the doctor was inclined to say they were just stress. I said that I was concerned it was sinus, as her father and brother were super-prone, and he said it wouldn't hurt to get an ex-ray just to be safe. She had barely come out of getting the x-ray and the lab had the doctor's office was on the phone because she had an absolutely massive, serious infection. Not always the case, but worth checking. Guest guest
Yes, they can! I do get these spells of bluriness/partial blindness that my doctor said are " visual migraines " once in a while, and they might or might not be accompanied by headaches. The things that help a usual migraine help them. Mine usually last about an hour, during which I can't do much because my field of vision gets this big throbbing blotch in the middle of it. Obviously, you should get him checked and rule anything else out, but, to answer your question, these exist. I get another variation of migraine " aura " -- a curved zigzag line (sawtooth pattern) that's mainly in the left visual field. It's like an semi-transparent pulsating multi-colored neon light pattern that when I try to look at it seems to move away. As it increases in intensity (and size) I may not be able to see large parts of the (left) visual field and it's distracting anyway with those shimmering forms moving about to try to read or do anything. The zigzag line is not symetrical - the " sawtooths " vary in size - but the pattern is always the exact same shape. These days I usually get the " aura " without also getting a headache, but it used to always signal an approaching migraine, especially one triggered by physical exertion. I also usually get some nausea and extreme sensitivity to light with strong migraine.
