Guest guest
We can't all be experts in all things nutrition. . . why doesn't she make an appointment with an allergy RD?? Dilemma - if 11 month old is allergic, she MUST get her home nut free. . . People die just from kissing another person that ate nuts, or on planes from other passengers eating nuts. There are a lot of online resources, or Joneja's cont ed materials; or even start with books by Brostoff; Food Allergies and Food Intolerances. Just the VERY quick answer! I already suggested the FAAN website, but she is still pretty nervous about it all. Her other dilemma is her 2 year old daughter is on a big peanut butter kick right now, so she's torn on how to deal with both of these issues. Her MD suggested removing ALL potentially harmful products from her home, so there will be less chance of cross-contaminationw Any suggestions would be appreciated! Guest guest
Most people have safe areas - where safe foods are located. It's a matter of teaching the 2 year old she can't have peanut butter around her brother (just like you don't feed the dog table food). She must wash hands, mouth, face etc... after eating peanut butter and before playing with little brother. It's difficult situation that won't go away for quite some time. The 2 year is able to be taught that baby brother will get really, really sick if he gets into peanut butter. Little brother will have to go the hospital and get and pokies. Maybe even get sick from the smell of peanut butter. In order to allow big sis to eat pb, if the mom can handle it have picnics outside and put the baby up wind so he doesn't smell the pb. always have handy wipes/wet wash clothes! Remind the mom: The number way to maintain good heaIth is handwashing. This is no different! The great thing about 2yrs is they can be more observant than busy parents. Most kids want to help. As a mom I've appealed to cousins to help me out and watch for anything different. Most kids will remember better than adults to wash hands, not give food allergens, check labels, remind adults etc... Little kids are very detailed. There are PAL braclets - youth size - that might really enlist the 2yr's support. Remind the mom this is a learning curve and next year she will not in the same place as she is now. I know without my education I would of been completely overwhelmed -unfunctionalable - if that's a word. With my education it was a daunting task. The biggest problem is stress and the second one is trusting someone else to care to the child. You're in a unique position to help out both ways.
