Hi Everyone,

I would like to start my six year old son on Melatonin. He does not have

significant sleep

issues but I believe he is not sleeping completely through the night. I do not

hear him wake

nor does he get out of bed but when I go into his room in the morning I notice

that the

blinds are up. So, I am assuming that he is waking up and falling back asleep at

some point

in the middle of the night (it is sometime between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. because he

is asleep

when I give him his B12 at 11 p.m.

I would love to get any advice on Melatonin (good or bad) and night waking. I've

been told

that Melatonin is great for our kids regardless of sleep disturbance. Feel free

to email me off

group.

TIA,

Dayna

Hi there. We've been using melatonin for about 2 years. We just increased the

dose from 1mg to 3mg and that's made a big difference. We also have a pretty

tough time with yeast in our house so giving the shot at 11 would stir yeast and

keep up for us. Do you give it each night? Are you noticing he's

sleeping thru on nights he doesn't take it? If you did, you could consider

giving it to him earlier in the day.

Good luck!

Good morning, I have the same question. Mine is 3 and he goes to bed

about 1030 and by 3 is back up sometimes for the day (sort of.. he

goes and takes a nap about 7ish until 9 then I have to wake him up

for " school " . I know he is not getting enough sleep. I have been

told in the past from some helpful mothers that melatonin just them

to sleep not keep them asleep. Is there another kind you are talking

about and where can I buy it? I have never heard of a slow release

melatonin. We give him 1.5 mg now he is 3 and weighs 47 lbs. I am

hoping to find something to help him (and mommy)sleep at night.

Both my husband and I have been using slow release melatonin for about a year and it works great to keep us asleep (expereince more dreaming, deeper sleep when using it). You have to swallow it whole.

Here is what we use..............................

Kirkman Labs carries a slow release melatonin at 2.5 mg. See link http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/ViewProductDetails@Product_ID@204@Product_Group_ID@...

Here is the information from the website:

Kirkman® offers melatonin in a special “Slo-Release” matrix that releases melatonin gradually over a period of 2-4 hours. Melatonin is a hormone secreted in the human body by the pineal gland. It is manufactured in that gland from serotonin. It is believed that manufacturing and secreting melatonin is the sole function of the pineal gland. Melatonin supplementation is used principally for:• Helping people to sleep • Reducing the effects of jet-lag• As a powerful antioxidant• Stimulating phosphorylation of pyridoxine in the brain to facilitate the formation of pyridoxal 5-phosphate (P-5-P) • Stimulating glutathione peroxidase formation Several double-blind studies have shown that melatonin supplementation is effective in promoting sleep when melatonin levels are low. If an individual takes melatonin when levels are not reduced, then it has reportedly no effect. The reason for this is that the body normally secretes melatonin just before bedtime. Darkness stimulates melatonin secretion, while light suppresses it. This process is all controlled by an internal body clock governing hormonal secretions called “natural circadian rhythm.” Low melatonin levels are considered a very common cause of sleeplessness. In jet lag, this natural body clock may not allow for secretion of melatonin at the appropriate time, thereby making melatonin supplementation useful. In addition to being a sleep aid, melatonin may also help in the methylation process, which is important in the body’s absorption and utilization of vitamin B-6. For this reason, we now recommend that everyone who uses Super Nu-Thera® or Thera Response also try melatonin in the evening to determine if it provides added benefits. For those individuals who are deficient in glutathione, melatonin is important because it stimulates the production of glutathione peroxidase. IMPORTANT:These tablets must be swallowed whole. They may not be crushed or dissolved in liquids because that would destroy the “Slo-Release” matrix that lengthens the tablet’s dissolution time. They may be swallowed with food such as applesauce, mashed potatoes or peanut butter followed by some water.

In addition to giving a sleep aide whether adult or child affected I

think it's important to also continue to address this dysfunction and

the cause.

We found here that addressing liver and adrenals was important to

resolve this issue. Lots of dietary things you can to do support

diet, and minerals for adrenals.

And I did forget to mention that we also give 5HTP (like Cheryl pointed out!!)... And the Adrenals & Liver are also a big component of the sleep cycle and must be treated as well, just as mentioned!!!

Melatonin is good for getting you to fall asleep. But not

so good for keeping you asleep.

What minerals do you use to support the adrenal system? I was at a friends and

her friend is a Dr. She looked at my son's hands and said that he probably

needed support for his adrenal system. They are red usually on the palms.

Thanks!

I had a similar experience, with my son going off to sleep okay, but then waking in the middle of the night.

I read in Autism: Effective Biomedical Treatment, that too much melatonin can cause waking. I can't remember the reason, but it has to do with the body having to process the excess.

I went from giving my son 3mg a night to .5mg. He still goes off to sleep fine, and now he stays asleep!

So, try cutting the dose as much as you can.

5HTP helps regulate sleep and makes your serotonin levels go up!!!

Great for anxiety when mixed with GABA... and yes... Melatonin will help you fall asleep... GABA will help you stay asleep!!! And Magnesium Citrate also helps to relax them and sleep better!!! This 4 work great together!!!

For adrenal support I use Ora-Adren-80 and Iodine drops...

Melatonin helps produce the natural sleep hormone that we all have.

This hormone makes the body sleepy when it is dark and awaking when

there is light. So if you give melatonin and for some reason there is

some light or too much light in the room, the child will awake and

would not be able to go back into the sleep cycle. It happened to my

child fist time I gave him melatonin. I was staying away from it. But

later one I started ordering melatonin from Kirkman Labs, this is a

time realease type. Stay away from the rapid action one. Give it at

least an hour before bed time, and start slow, half a pill for a

while and play with the dosis to bring it up to a pill, and it does

really help to get him in a deep sleep. It is also a great

antioxidant. I give to my son 25mg of 5HTP at night as well with

L-Thianine 100 mg. (Yasko recommends not to give thyptophan- or 5HTP

alone without L'Thianine because later one it can be tough in the

thyroid. So I give my son the three pills. At least if he eventually

wakes up for a moment, he goes back to sleep immediately and is hard

to wake him up in the morning.

Oh, I feel you pain. I feel so bad for you. My son would only sleep three hours a night and no naps. Children with special needs seem to have sleep issues, not sure why. Now we use Sleep Assure. It works great! It has other helpful sleep agents in it, all natural. It is $15 a month. My son is 5 so you might not need as much. It is very safe. If you can't get it it at your health food store, let me know and I can pick it up for you and send it out. The trial bottle is only $5. Good luck.

Does your NT dc have a completely unrestricted diet? I found that my

NT children had sleep issues due to chemical additives (colors and

preservatives) in food and personal products.

if kids have issues falling asleep due to low melitonin they need it. if you have NT kids and ASD kids, often there is overlap in many of the medical issues
