(Address: Institute of Clinical Biochemistry and Hematology, University, Medical Faculty in Pilsen, Czech Republic). Summary: In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study involving 36 subjects (9 men, 27 women, mean age: 61.3 years old, mean body mass index: 34.33 kg/m2) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (median duration: 3 years), supplementation with chromium (Cr) enriched yeast was found to improve blood glucose variables and oxidative stress. The subjects were randomized to supplementation with 400 microg Cr/day as Cr-enriched yeast (n=19) or placebo (n=17), for 12 weeks. A significant increase in serum Cr and a significant decrease in fasting serum glucose was observed in the Cr group, compared to the placebo group. At intervention end, glutathione peroxidase activity and levels of reduced glutathione were significantly decreased in the placebo group, while remaining essentially unchanged in the Cr group. Additionally, while serum glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and glycated protein were essentially unchanged in the Cr group, HbA1c tended to increase in the placebo group (from 6.94% to 7 .11%). Fasting serum insulin decreased with a greater tendency in the Cr group compared to the placebo group (-16.5% vs. -9.5%). Thus, this study suggests that in well-controlled type 2 diabetics, supplementation with Cr-enriched yeast may improve blood glucose variables and oxidative stress. -- ne Holden, MS, RD < fivestar@... > " Ask the Parkinson Dietitian " http://www.parkinson.org/ " Eat well, stay well with Parkinson's disease " " Parkinson's disease: Guidelines for Medical Nutrition Therapy " http://www.nutritionucanlivewith.com/ Quote
