Jan,

You provided no e-mail address. You can tell Beth that my business actually started to increase exponentially when I decided to pursue avenues outside of ADA. Practically every project I attempted with them or their special interest groups cost me money and headaches. I had to opt out of membership and involvement because the cost--was absolutely cost prohibitive.

She might want to do a cost-benefit analysis to determine if she is going to get a return on her investment for showing. It may be more worthwhile to save that money and use it for marketing materials for another professional organization who eventually would be willing to recognize her value and pay her honorarium and expenses.

The only reason ADA gets to do this is because the membership lets them. If attendance at this meeting dropped because the speakers they were able to procure using this short-sighted policy were not worth the travel and expenses...they would eventually have to change their policy.

Meeting planning is extremely competetive and this colleague would do much, much better at an integrative medicine conference. It would be ADA's loss. Unless her career aspiration is to make a dent in ADA's way of looking at things no matter what the personal cost to her.

Jan Forwarding this for another RD. (Don't think any of us are too surprised, but please reply back to this person, rather than just me or the list.)Jan PatenaudeDear Colleagues,I am requesting your help in seeking speaker sponsorship for my educational session at FNCE 2004 titled "Complementary & Alternative Medicine: Where's The Evidence & What's An R.D. To Do?". To date, the ADA FNCE Sponsorship Manager has been unable to find a sponsor for my session (the Sponsorship Manager had prohibited speakers from contacting potential sponsors early on and now time's almost out and I'm left holding the $3K bag)). Thus, I'm expected to pay for my travel, lodging, and incidentals -approximately a $3,000 cost. In return I will receive complimentary conference registration (a $300 value) and a mere $250 honorarium- FAR less than I've ever received anywhere, and I wouldn't in fact accept anywhere else- as I would argue for my value as a highly skilled/credentialed RD!. This, despite the fact that ADA is expecting registration fees for over 10,000 attendees ($300-350 each), 400 vendors exhibiting at a MINIMUM exhibit space cost of $2050, program book advertising (~$2.5-4K per ad), ~$1.5 million of sponsorship opportunities, product marketplace booth rentals ($425 each), annual sales of conference audiotapes ($13/audiotape), and I'm sure I'm overlooking MANY other sources of revenue. What is MOST galling to me is the fact that "ADA Member Speakers" receive complimentary conference registration and honorarium (if available), while "ADA Nonmember Speakers" receive complimentary conference registration and honorarium (if available), coach travel, up to 2 nights lodging, and up to 2 days incidental expenses. How can we (ADA members) be expected to fulfill our/ADA's mission of "leading the future of dietetics" and our/ADA's vision of being "the most valued source of food and nutrition services" when our own organization value/recognizess (at least monetarily) non-members more than us??? I recall this when I was active in my district dietetic association- and it galled me then too that WRDA non-members could get $500 for speaking while WRDA members received only $250- and now gee I get to pay 12 times that in travel-related expenses and travel 3,000 miles for that same old local WRDA honorarium! It was just one of many reasons why I resigned from all dietetic association activities at the district/state/national DPG level a few years back. I now need to find an acceptable sponsor or incur the travel-related expenses myself (never mind the fact that I should receive a decent honorarium for the 120 plus hours I will have put in on this lecture). Can anyone suggest potential sponsors for my session- perhaps you have contacts at supplement companies, natural food companies, or gluten free food companies (a part of my session is on alternative uses for a gluten-free diet)?????Could someone (but not everyone) cross post this with my permission to NCC DPG website also? Beth,

Hi, long time (since we worked together at MSKCC (10 years ago?).

Anyway, contact Adam Banning at Metagenics (NYC rep) and perhaps Metgenics will pick it up for you.

If not, let me know and I will tru to get you a private sponsor.

Monika,

I have to concurr. Although I toyed with dropping out of ADA last year, for various personal reasons I decided not to do it. However, when I was doing a significant amount of public speaking and seminars, I did not do any at any ADA sponsored events bc of the fact that the reimbursement just was not there.

Last year I agreed to be the chair for the California Dietetic Association Annual Meeting, and what a headache it was! I refused to offer a professional a pitance just bc they were ADA members, so I got the fee doubled, from $250 to $500. That took more than sweat, blood and tears, I used leverage by threatening to resign and got it approved. However, there were many dietitians whose fee was $2500 - $3000 - not an excessive fee when you consider that other non-RD speakers were asking for, and receiving, twice that much. I got on the internet and found sponsors from different sources, I also pulled out every chip owed by every vendor I'd ever done business with, and got money from them, and managed to obtain sponsorhip for many, many speakers who did not have their own.

My advise to any speaker is that if they are dependent on sponsorship moneys for their reimbursement, that they do not ever wait to contact them regardless of advise given, bc it's much easier to turn down that to obtain. Also, it's advantageous to partner with a few that will consistently sponsor one person, and let them know of upcoming events. I kow it's too late for Beth, it may help others.

My views and opinions made me very unpopular among the higher ADA and CDA escheleon, and I was chastised multiple times, including for some of the opinions I posted in several listserves and forums.

Jan,

Nice quote, and the reason why my friends are counted, because like me they tell the truth to the best of their ability. I neglected to finish my anecdote by also stating that I did not shut up or back off, and I agreed, when asked, to be in a committee for FNCE in Anaheim this year. I feel strongly that not withdrawing from uncomfortable situations, standing your ground politely and restating your views are more influencial than walking away. Something might change, nothing may change, but I've done my share to influence.
