Help I am a carbo junkie and can't stop

Merry

>>

Hello fellow junkie! = )

I have found that by cutting out the breads, rice, beans and pasta that I do

not crave the carbs like I once did. I am following Bernstein's WOE so it

has been much easier now. I have not read any of the books you are asking

about, sorry.

Vicki,

NO I am not kidding....I have gained the 17lbs I lost and can't seem to

get in control of my eating.....Plus I started smoking again.....I have set

this Friday to stop smoking....I have gotten the patch.....but eating is out

of control right now....I keep trying to find something inside me to grab

onto so I can get it straightened out but feeling pretty empty right now....

I am not sure which of Dr. Bernsteins books to buy....... I am type 2

and feel like I am self distruct mode right now....

All of the books listed there were written by the Drs. Heller. There are

several other good guides as well.

Lee, I am glad to see you at this site! I know what a struggle it is

for you to try to reconcile reducing carbohydrate intake with the strong

cultural heritage that relies on rice and beans and potatoes. It took me

months of reading and agonizing to finally convince myself. By the way, when

I took that carb addicts' test two years ago, I flunked it big-time ...

scored 2-3 times high enough to qualify as a true carb addict.

Toni and everyone who replied,

Thank you so much for the out pouring of help and understanding. I think

that one of the things I hate the most is feeling like I am all alone in

this. I started out so well and lost weight, got off meds and than boom hit

bottom....Is this normal?

Merry....thanks so much everyone.

Merry, get " Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. " It is our " Bible. " Maybe one

of the other people in the group who has been fence-straddling or struggling

to get a successful program going will volunteer to be your internet buddy

and you two can sort of do this as a team and compare notes?

Don't let this get you down, Merry! Before I started on insulin (infact on no

meds at all,)I lost 50 lbs on no fat and lots of carbs, no meat! Now if I eat

carbs, even in the form of fruit, I get so hungry that I think I am going to eat

the whole house, foundation and all! If I low carb (I mean, almost *no carb*) I

never even think about food. Have lost a few pounds and cut insulin intake way

down. But not low enough to let me lose the rest of the 35 lbs that I gained

after starting insulin therapy. I cannot exercise just now, however because of

my

laser treatment. I'm a little discouraged because I *thought* (doc indicated

this) that my visit on Mon was just to make sure I was healing right. Guess not!

Had to have another laser treatment. Still bleeding! Go back in two months.

Think I will ride stationary bike some, though. Will walk later. It is so hot

here, they are advising everyone to stay inside. They just said the THI

(heat/humidity index) os 109 degrees and it is only about 3:30 (can't see the

clock on the conputer, am judging by tv.) Good thing I can touch type! Still

have double vision. Get Bernstein Diabetes Solution. You can order it from

Bayer Diagnostics 5681 W. Cleveland Rd. P.O. Box 11608 South Bend In

46674..... Include a check for $8.00...meanwhile get it from your library. If

they don't have it, ask it they can get it for you from another library. Mine

will search the entire state database and whoever has it will send it. Maybe

yours will, too. Til you get it, eat meat, fish, bacon, eggs, large salads (I

make my own dressing from buttermilk, real mayo and Hidden Valley so it has no

sugar. Those low fat ones are loaded with sugar! Eat broccoli, yellow and

zucchini squash, gr beans (especially grench style) spinach, turnip greens,

saurkraut, cabbage, etc. Stay away from bprp (bread, potatoes, rice and

pasta) Check your bgs a lot! Exercise if you can, but first of all, get the

bgs

in control and feel better! Contact me anytime! I care! Toni

Let me tell you my experience,

I just been reading the book and have done the diet for only 4 days ago and I

started with a fast reading of 270- in only 4 days my numbers have steadly

decreased. This morning it was 163. These have been steady numbers no jumping

around.

I would be glad to be an encourager.

That is exactly what happened to me. Stayed off meds and kept the weight off for

5 years. Then orals, lots of them, max dose, then insulin. Feel great but

can't

lose the weight I gained from insulin. But my bgs are great, thanks to insulin

and low carb! Toni

Merry, we have all had those times when it just didn't work out like we

wanted it to. I have had puzzling weight gains ... my body's stubborn

refusal to shed weight unless I starve it off ... the occasional indulgence

that turns into three days of excesses ... The more I deal with this the

more it is like the pages Lee Holbert brought up: carbohydrate

addiction is what it feels like. So I just try to adopt the attitude of

recovering alcoholics and other people with " substance abuse " problems ...

Easy Does It ... One Day At A Time ... I Am Sober ... For Today ...

If I have a good day - great! If I fall off the wagon, I just dust myself

off and give it another go.

I have feeling you are back on the right track now, Merry ... I sense that

resolve building ... Just keep your spirits up ... Don't be too hard on

yourself ... It took most of us type 2's many years to get sick enough that

we were finally diagnosed. You will shed the 17 lbs. that sneaked back on

.... and then some!

Hugs,

Susie :o)

Hi, Merry...well, it's normal in the sense that once we accomplish something

I think a natural thing is to think, yeah, I got it licked, now I'm going to

relax and lay back little. Elva, I think you fit this picture too...you

were both doing reallly good then boom!

I remember a saying " rust never sleeps " (silly saying) but I think it means

that even when you're not paying attention it happens. Which is to say, even

though we may feel fine and BGs are way down the disease is still there

lurking and waiting to get us and if we let down our guard even a little bit

it's going to get us!

So , Elva, as this applies to you, you probably should've thought ahead when

you went out shopping with your son and factored in that maybe you were going

to need to eat beforeyou got home and carried emergency supplies...some food

to hold you that you could eat if you didn't want to risk a restaurant meal.

And Merry, yes, those carbs are just out there waiting for you...you've got

to keep your guard up against temptation. Remember...low carbing is a way of

life change. But you'll be okay...just climb back on and start working. You

lost the 17 pounds once; you can do it again. You're definitely not alone...

We're here for you. Vicki

Yep, like I posted earlier today (5 a.m., really!) rust never sleeps...thanks

to insulin my BGs are great, I'm feeling great, but my carbs are slowly going

up and I'm slowly getting fatter! I think I need to lower-carb too. ONWARD

Mike, is there a gym you can join? Because weather is a prime way to avoid

exercise -- of course one shouldn't go out walking on a 103 degree day. Here

in Oregon the rain doesn't USUALLY keep me from my daily walk but when the

weather gets below 40 degrees -- in winter usually a sizable number of days

-- I can't do usual outside walk because my hands get painfully cold no

matter that I wear Polartek gloves with liners and everything (I even tried

battery operated gloves) and that's when I find the gym definitely

worthwhile. Daily exercise is soooooo important to diabetes control that no

excuses should be allowed.

Occasionally when the weather's so bad and I don't even want to drive to gym

because of ice I just run up and down my steps about 25 times, wait a little

while then do it again. And again. Vicki

PS: Aerobic exercise will really lower your BG. Vicki

Hey, Mike, don't apologize for long posting -- what you said was important.

And it's important that others hear what you have to say -- we can all relate

to it. Sounds like you've got the idea, too. Let us know how your non-pizza

outing with co-workers went today. Vicki

Merry,

I remember what a positive attitude you had when you started. Once you

get " into " this again your positive attitude will come back and you will

feel confident again. I also have good and bad days. I am still low

carbing even though some days I eat more than others and my numbers

still fluctuate and I get upset if I am up a little. Remember that other

factors play a part in the BG numbers such as stress.

Start it one day (or hour) at a time. Take your walks with your golden

retrievers. (yes, I remember the story about your lows and the dog who

ran home)I know it is hot but I walk in the evening and it is not so

bad. Are you on medication now? I remember that you were in control with

diet and exercise. Keep you chin up and stop beating yourself up. We all

do the same thing and no one is perfect. I have gained and lost weight

my entire life and felt horrible about myself when I gained. (I had to

starve to lose weight!)

We are all here for you and remember that.

Mike,

I am all jazed up about the book....it should come sometime next week.

In the mean time I have cut my carbs in half and increase my protien. I am

already starting to see the numbers go down.....I still feel slugish about 1

hour after eating....so I take a short walk.....the weather has been so hot

and humid here....

Thanks for the encouragement....U are doing great and I hope to be able to

have the same brag soon....

Reynaud's syndrome ... very common among diabetics. I had it in high school

already, and didn't have a name for it. That is one of the signs that

indicates to me I am basically a lifelong diabetic. I think that many type

2's are in the same boat ... in other words, type 2 can be like a slow,

incomplete type 1.

No I am not on medication...and I have to get things under control
