, could you be dehydrated? When we lose fluids, not only do we

urinate less, but our blood volume shrinks, which concentrates glucose in

our remaining blood. I wonder if you are getting carbohydrates from a hidden

source. There should be only 3 grams of carbohydates in 4 ounces of cottage

cheese ... but if it contains fruit, the content would jump up to 15 grams

of carbs per 4 ounces. Some veggies are actually pretty high in

carbohydrates. Tell us which ones you ate and we can probably sleuth the

problem out.

, Vegies and cottage cheese both have a sufficient amount of carbs in

them. Read the product info or obtain a carb counter in book form. You will

have to monitor your bg frequently to see what you can eat . But watch the

carbs. Also, I have found that after I eat, if I do a moderate amount of

exercise (even taking a shower), 2 hours later, my bg is great! Hope this

helps! Barb Riehl

, I assume you're not on any meds yet. Here's something you can try

for breakfast...a couple of eggs (no carbs) and a slice of packaged rye bread

(13 carbs) works nicely tho I wouldn't have it every morning. No orange

juice! And no sugar in your coffee or tea either...another thing you could

try is canned sardines (no carbs) or some sliced deli meat like turkey or

chicken...low fat cottage cheese shouldn't make your BG go up either. Vicki

Susie,

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I am not drinking at all.

I live in Florida and it has already gotten hot here. I am traditionally

not a big drinker and have to force myself to drink water. A few weeks

ago I was really thirsty but that side effect seems to have gone away.

My veggies yesterday were lettuce, broccoli, snow peas (about 3) in a

salad and cucumber. For dinner I had 1/4 acorn squash and some

asparagus. By the way, the cottage cheese this morning was the fat free

variety. I wonder if the non fat free has less carbs or sugars. It said

4 grams of sugar. How many grams are we allowed? Does it work like that?

Yes, thank you Barbara, when I took my BG yesterday, it was after going

to the gym. That may have been the reason for the reading. I will get a

carb counter today. Thanks again.

No, I am not. Do the medications even out your bg level? I am going to

the doctor on Saturday and I am sure she is going to put me on some.

low fat cottage cheese shouldn't make your BG go up either

The cottage cheese was Breakstone Fat Free. It had 4 sugar grams. I will

check at the market to see if the lowfat has less.

What about whole grain bread from the health food store? Would that be a

better choice?

Be sure to drink 64 ounces or so of water or similar every day, even if you

are not thirsty. Jazz it up with lemon or something. What I do is make very

weak unsweetened iced tea (1/3 strength).

Snow peas are pretty carby. Acorn squash is only 14-15 grams carbs for a

cup, cubed. The fat-free varieties are nearly always more carby than the

regular versions. But cottage cheese usually isn't very carby, even for the

fat-free varieties, unless fruit is added. You said it had 4 grams of sugar

! Stress ... testing error ... who the heck knows? What is important

and good is that you have an eagle eye on your numbers and are testing

regularly. That ol' devil diabetes ain't gonna get you, girl!!

Yep ... if we exert ourselves only mildly, not a lot happens. But a vigorous

physical workout will spike our bg's. Our body is mobilizing its energy

reserves ... the glucose. It is circulating in our bloodstream, working its

way into cells to keep you from experiencing lactic acidosis. That certainly

explains it!

Hi Susie,all

I was taught that if your blood sugars are high (over 240) you should

NOT exercise. I guess this explains why. But, why does it peak with a

normal blood sugar? Does it work the same regardless of where your

blood sugar is?

Also, for the dehydration. When I check bs and it is higher than what I

think it should be, I think about the amount of fluid I have taken in.

I usually see it come down if I drink water! Didn't put the two

together tho'!

Thanks for this info!

Although vigorous exercise can spike your bg's temporarily, the long-term

effect is to bring them down and, over time, to improve glucose uptake. I

would think that having high bg's would be all the more reason to try to

sweat and pump them off, unless the diabetic had other problems like blood

pressure that zoomed along with bg's, or the person tended to faint with

high bg's, or the bg's were dangerously high. (I'm no doctor, etc.)

Thanks Susie, I cry every time I get something like that from you. I

know I am too emotional about this but really I am determined. Today it

was 137 and I am losing weight. Went down one size already. I do think I

am not drinking enough but am going to work on that. Believe me, I am

like a hawk with this. It was 4 grams of sugar in the cottage cheese.

Read it on the back. I noticed there is more in the fat free variety

than the lowfat. The exercise is really helping me alot and I am

starting to like it. (OK maybe I do not love it) Thanks Susie!

We recommend 64 oz. daily, plus 8 oz. for each additional 25 pounds you are

overweight.

I don't pretend to understand this, but I know that in general for me - if

I eat breakfast (usual high fiber cereal) and then exercise, my BGs are

generally lower afterwards then they were before. If I don't eat and then

exercise, they are higher. In general my before exercise BGs are around

6, and post exercise BGs are around 4.5-5. (I usually have to have a snack

after exercise.)

If anybody every figures it out, they'll be millionaires. :-)

Good luck,

Dawn

Dear Vicki,

I know that I should be drinking it and am working on drinking. Thanks

for the advice. I had more yesterday than usual and will try the quart

bottle. I also drink bottled water because we have a well and would not

drink that stuff. Thanks for your input.

Consider looking at a plan that is conmsiderably lower in carbs as well.

Many people here have much better control with lower carbs. See 'Dr.

Bernstein's Diabetes Solution' and 'Protein Power' or 'Dr Atkins New Diet

Revolution'.

Ditto here...

I found that carbs made me hungry for more carbs..

Lower carbs meant lower peak BG's for me.

What carbs I did take in I balanced with protein...
