Guest guest Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 WOW you are in a real dilemma. You need to get th Pred stabilized at a level you can live with, without Cushings symptoms but without low Cortisol levels too. Have you tried adding in a milder adrenal support such as Isocort or Hydrocortisone to help replace some of the Pred? That would be my suggestion for your taper to lower the pred a tad and replace with not quite equal amounts of HC. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV My Ebay Jewelry Store http://stores.ebay.com/valeriescrystalcreations http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ Quote
Guest guest Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 / >Val, Thanks for your quick response. I am a bit perturbed at my Endo right now. I had called his office with my symptoms and was told on Monday of last week that I should just stay on 15 mg of Pred until I saw them again this coming up Thursday. I had all the symptoms of an adrenal crisis, but it was never mentioned. And, I continued to get sicker by the day on the 15 until I saw my GP on Thursday. He did blood labs and urine, which showed blood in the urine, my BP was 120/98, which puzzled him since low BP is usual in a crisis. I am wondering if all the pain I was in made it read like this? I still do not feel right today. I took my 30 mg when I woke up. At that time, I was real shaky and still am with the pain returning, especially in my kidney area of my back. I am so blessed to find this board and I hope you can guide me through this. My Endo says I must get off the pred because of the Cushing's and I am just at a loss as to what to do next. My thyroid was removed in July last year because my levels would not stabilize and it was making my TEd worse. I had radiation treatments on my eyes 2 weeks ago to reduce the swelling as there is nothing more to be done or removed to help my TED. I have had vision loss and tremendous swelling even after the thyroid was removed. I was on B & R before that. So, when we try to taper, the eyes swell back up. Then the Cushing's hit FULL FORCE. Those symptoms on top of the withdrawal has been utter hell. Now, I just don't know what to do! Apparently I am going to have adrenal issues...is it addisons? And this will require the steroids but I need to get off because of the cushings? I am scared, depressed and sick! Any help will be so appreciated. Pleaase excuse any spelling mistakes as my vision is not good. Judy Quote
Guest guest Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 I take it none of your doctors has explained to you that your Cushings will go away as soon as you are lower on the adrenal meds? When your Cortisol drops into normal ranges, the Cushings stops. But now that you have been on those high steroids for this long you WILL just about be guaranteed Additions. Which is not as bad. You will need to stay on some steroids for life, most likely. But just enough to replace your own hormones that your body cannot make any longer. Now this is the extent that I am familiar with Cushings caused by too much steroids.I am at work right now but I promise I will do some research tonight and find you some GOOD info. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV My Ebay Jewelry Store http://stores.ebay.com/valeriescrystalcreations http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ Quote
Guest guest Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 Yes, they did explain the Cushing's will go away when I get off the steroids. I guess the trick is going to be living through the tapering process to get down to that point. Thank you for your info and concern. I really need it right now. I feel my levels dropping as we speak, shakey and the crying is setting in again along with more pain and headache. I took an extra 10 mg a few minutes ago to see if it helps. Then, I'll try to just do 20 tonight instead of the 30. Judy Quote

I know NOTHING about homeopathic medicine. Any books or websites you can recommend? I have a terrible time reading books with my vision as bad as it is, but on the internet, if I have to, I can copy and paste into word and blow the font size up! It's a pain, but I am determined to educate myself in order to help myself through this. Many Thanks! Judy Quote

Guest guest Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 Welcome to the group Judy, I'm sorry to hear you're going through such a hard time. I don't think I've seen anybody on such a high dose of pred before. I'm thinking your aldosterone levels might have something to do with it. With the high dose you're taking your adrenals are surely shut down, and the pred has mineralcorticoid activity that can make up for the lack of aldosterone it can cause. So maybe when you're trying to reduce you're also reducing the mineralcorticoids in your system which might cause the cramping, nausea, kidney pain and dizziness from salt loss. How's your blood pressure when you're feeling so badly? Do you feel better when you lie down? Try drinking some salt water (1/2tsp sea salt in a glass of warmish water) and see if that doesn't help, and also ask you doctors about some Florinef (synthetic aldosterone) to see you through the taper. Also, with the high WBCs and blood in the urine you could have a kidney or urinary tract infection which would have to be treated seperately. High levels of pred can suppress your immune system so having an infection wouldn't be surprising. It certainly sounds like you've been through the wringer. I hope you can get this straightened out. Take the taper as slowly as you need to, it sounds like you'll probably always need some level of pred or HC, so make sure you're feeling consistantly good on one dose before you drop down to the next. Best of luck and feel free to ask us anything or just vent when you need to. You've found a good group. Hope we can help. Jen > > Hello! I was refered to this board from Jody on Mediboard. Guest guest Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 Judy, One other thing I forgot. It might be worth it to invest in a blood glucose monitor and a blood pressure monitor. If your cortisol drops too low, so will your blood sugar and the same thing with aldosterone and blood pressure (low and low). I've always used both to regulate my (much lower) HC and Florinef doses and have found it works well. Jen > > Welcome to the group Judy, > > I'm sorry to hear you're going through such a hard time.
