Guest guest
The main reason Lupus patients are told to watch their intake of carbohydrates is to lower the intake of sugar forming foods. Patients who are taking corticosteroids such as prednisone, or medrol, are very prone to yeast infections. Yeast needs to feed upon sugar to grow. So if the diet is low in sugar, it makes it easier to rid the body of yeast. Taking prednisone also increases the body's blood sugars, making it hard to control and can cause a person to develop drug related diabetes. Since foods with carbohydrates (potatoes, bread, cereal, rice, starchy vegetables) turn into sugar once they are being digested, it is imperative that intake of carbohydrates is limited. Whole wheat bread is better than the highly processed white bread. Simple carbohydrates are also found in processed and refined sugars such as: candy table sugar syrups (not including natural syrups such as maple) regular carbonated beverages thus these items should be avoided if possible, if not they should be eaten in very small amounts.
