Kathy:

I prefer the styles of Luxotica (many opticians carry them, and they own

Lenscrafters so they'll be easy to find). However, though wire frames

are more durable (Caitlyn's current wire frames have lasted 10 months

without breaking even once), wire frames leave marks on the nose. We

have to let Caitlyn go several days without her glasses every other

month to let the skin grow back over and heal. Ouch! So the plastic

frames are much more comfortable but break easily (Caitlyn went through

3 pairs in 6 months! $100 a pair--ouch!)

So my advice, if you get the wire frames, ask the optician for different

styles of nose pads and an eyeglass screwdriver, you can switch nose

pads every month so the glasses wear on a different part of her nose.

Also, regardless of which style you choose, make sure the optician

offers you a warranty with the glasses (it should be a free warranty),

replacement frames for 1 year free of charge with all parts brought

back, and one-time replacement lenses for free. One more thing, get the

bicarbonate lenses, they cost about $10 more but they will scratch less

(and the lenses will get scratched a lot). Also, call around, find out

who has the biggest selection of toddler frames.

To get Caitlyn used to wearing them, I planned the first week with

activities she very much enjoyed which involved one on one attention.

We watched videos together, went swimming, etc. Every time her hand

went up to the glasses, I said no and redirected her attention. After

about a week of my constant vigilance, she was used to them and left

them alone. She successfully wears them to this day.
