Guest guest
Currently, I am a student physical therapist. I have recently been approached informally by a representative of a company that pays its employees by the unit rather than the traditional hourly wage or salary. No mention of a base salary was mentioned by this representative. This form of compensation is a completely new concept for me, and I have to admit that I'm a little leary. This particular job is full-time, in a skilled nursing home setting and possibly could require routine travel between 3 homes which are approximately 45 minutes from one another. Job duty includes both evaluations and patient treatment. As a student and soon to be new graduate, I would like to hear from therapists who have or know of someone who has had experience with this type of compensation for their services. Thank you for your help. Guest guest
Christy, Make sure to get answers to these questions: 1. Are the " units " based on CPT codes or are you just counting the 15 minute increments you are with patients? This is important since an evaluation is billed as only one unit, but may last 30-45 minutes (2-3 15-minute units). 2. How much time will you be expected to attend meetings in the three nursing homes? 3. How much time out of your day will you be traveling? 4. What type(s) of documentation are required and how time intensive are they? Does each facility use the same documentation system? 5. How much are you getting paid per unit? The questions above will help you determine how much billable time per day you can spend with patients. You can then figure out what you would be getting paid based on the number of units during that time (again, you need to know how units are defined). Money should not be the ultimate goal, especially in a first job, but you must be sure that you make a living wage and that it is comparable to the market in which you live.
