Me**I think that the Treatment Advocacy Center is much more

dangerous than NAMI. But at least they are now admitting that the

drugs do not affect everyone as intended. They say here that the

drugs didn't work on Ted Kazynski at all.

WORLD NEWS TONIGHT WITH PETER JENNINGS, DECEMBER 17, 2003 (06:30

PM ET)

[ Here is a transcript from a segment of World News Tonight on

Hinckley and his request that features Treatment Advocacy Center

Executive Director Zdanowicz and President E. Fuller

Torrey.]

HINCKLEY'S CONDITION MENTAL HEALTH

PETER JENNINGS, ABC NEWS

(Off Camera) In 1982, when the assassination attempt was so fresh,

90 percent of the people we talked to in that poll believed Hinckley

should not go free, even if he recovered from his mental illness.

Some people clearly have the same opinion. But the judge today said

that all the evidence suggests that Hinckley will not be a danger to

himself or to others, and a senior government psychiatrist agrees.

With more on the science, here's ABC's Dan .

DAN HARRIS, ABC NEWS

(Voice Over) There is broad and seemingly unanimous agreement in the

mental health community that even someone sick enough to shoot the

president can, through treatment, be made trustworthy.

MARY ZDANOWICZ, NATIONAL TREATMENT CENTER

We know from studies that people can be treated very successfully.

And when people are on medication, the risk of violence occurring

again is reduced significantly. (sic)

DAN HARRIS

(Voice Over) Dr. E. Fuller Torrey examined Hinckley on the

request of Hinckley's family.

DOCTOR E. FULLER TORREY, NATIONAL TREATMENT CENTER

Schizophrenia is not necessarily violent, and if the person is being

treated, people with schizophrenia have no more liability to

violence than anyone in the general population.

DAN HARRIS

(Off Camera) Mental health professionals say mental illness is just

that, an illness. And like any physical disease, say, diabetes, its

symptoms, they say, can be treated through medication.

DAN HARRIS

(Voice Over) However, medication does not work on all patients.

Neither Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, nor Weston, who shot

up Capitol Hill in 1998, have fully responded to treatment,

according to the Dr. E. Fuller Torrey. He says Hinckley was very

good at lying to doctors, and covering up his symptoms. But that if

Hinckley is on medication, he is no more dangerous than anyone else

in the community.

DOCTOR E. FULLER TORREY

If they ask me personally, should Hinckley be released, my

answer is absolutely, as long it's guaranteed he's on medication.

DAN HARRIS

(Voice Over) But, he says, there is no absolute guarantee that

Hinckley will behave. There is no such thing, says Dr. Torrey, as

100 percent.

** NAMI embraces the position of the Treatment Advocacy Center and played

a big role in getting legislation passed that was proposed by the Center.

Dear Glitter,

You said:

<<Poor Ted's (Kaczynski) brain was fried a long time ago when the CIA used

him as a drug guinea pig. This is all documented. I'm not hallucinating.

I think they used him in the LSD experiments.>>

** I know Ted's brother, , quite well. Dave turned Ted in. There's

much more to the story than most people know. Ted was never the same

according to Dave after these experiements. This was all part of the court

documents.

Of course not! They turned him into a psychic landmine, and not by accident, either.
