Guest guest
From Drain, From my point of view, what is irresponsible is our social decision to turn the health care system over to whoever can make the most amount of money they can out it. Of course there will be disparities at that point. In my view, this is really a logic problem, not an ethics problem. Corporate ethics is the ethics of a sociopath... The sociopath is unable to establish long term permanent relationships, they are glib, superficial, manipulative, grandiose, able to tell unlikely but convincing stories that cast themselves in a good light. Sociopaths are seldom embarrassed about their legal, financial or personal problems. Rather, sociopaths see these as temporary setbacks, the results of bad luck. Sociopaths show a stunning lack of concern for the devastating effects their actions have on others. This does sound like the corporate behavior of the health insurance industry, does it not? So lets drop all talk about medical ethics while we chose to let this profit driven industry run our health care. Unless there is very close regulation, such as is found in the regulation of the private insurance systems of Switzerland and Germany, the current changes I see will amount to a huge industry windfall with no substantial improvement in medical care. That means it is every man for himself...Pam's Titanic metaphore will be very apt. And physicians will continue to jump ship. Joanne Holland DVM/MD Drain, Oregon PS: A message for those who are fearful of a public run medical system. please understand I do know there are dangers to public systems. Romania and other places have demonstrated that, and those excesses were what our founding fathers knew they had to avoid. They set up this clumsy system of checks and balances so that it would be difficult for one man to control everything. However, in the process of avoiding the dangers of a cruel king, let us not leap into the arms of Cromwell's corporation.
