" It's a Great IDEA! "

This workshop is experiential and designed to introduce families to the

special education process. The scope of the workshop includes the basic laws

that shape special education services, the process, the roles, and

strategies families need to be effective and collaborative advocates for

their children. The workshop is designed to be both informative and fun.

Note * This workshop is offered in Spanish and English.

Procedural Safeguards: Understanding the Rules

What does that yellow sheet mean? It is the very legalistic information that

is provided when you write an IEP, or give consent. This workshop is about

what all that means to families and their children with disabilities. It is

important that families understand the procedural safeguards that protect a

child's right to a free and appropriate public education (F.A.P.E.).

How To Be An Effective IEP Team Member

The Individual Education Program that is written yearly for a student with a

disability is the most important document in his or her school file. Parents

are partners in developing the educational program for their child. This

workshop explains the process and helps families become more effective

members of the IEP Team in a way that produces better educational outcomes

for their children with disabilities.

Communication * A Keystone to Collaboration

This communication workshop is designed to improve the ability of families

and educators to comfortably share, hear, and understand the vital

information required to ensure that a child's education produces good

outcomes. It will include: key elements of collaborative communication,

nonverbal communication, written communication and listening skills.

Evaluation * How to Understand and Use It

The goal of this workshop is to provide an overview of the evaluation

process and describe the steps from identification to placement in special

education. This workshop emphasizes the parent's role in the evaluation

process.

Transition from School to Community

Leaving school and entering the adult world is an important step in the life

of every student. For the student who has a disability to take this step

successfully, good planning is needed. This is a workshop that presents some

of the steps those families and schools must take to make sure that good

planning, effective networking, and committed resources enable a student

with a disability to maximize choices and quality of life.

Dispute, Remedy, Resolution!

This workshop will explore the Florida state complaint process, mediation

and due process.

Beginning the Journey

Level I - Designed for families who have children who are just entering the

early intervention system, or have children birth to two years of age. The

workshop provides a " supportive atmosphere " for participants as they are

learning about the Family Support Plan, Transition issues, and the benefits

of participating in the process of Family Support Planning.

Level II * Designed for families who have children 2 years and older who

have been accessing the early intervention system, and are soon to

transition out of early intervention. The workshop provides a " supportive

atmosphere " to families as they learn about the transition process from the

Early Intervention System to the Public School System.

Wills and Trusts - " Making an Estate Plan "

This workshop illustrates the need for financial planning, regardless of the

amount of assets, and provides strategies for bequeathing assets to a person

with a developmental disability resulting in minimal impact on government

benefits.

Inclusion

Inclusion is a way of thinking * a philosophy. It is a continuum of services

and supports to meet the needs of ALL students-a process, and possible only

with collaboration. Come learn more about inclusion and the least

restrictive environment (LRE).

Functional Behavior Assessment/ Positive Behavioral Support Plans

Traditional approaches to discipline ask WHAT the problem behavior is, and

addresses it using punishment in the hope that such behavior simply goes

away. Traditional approaches to teaching difficult-to-teach students

generally blame the STIDENT for not learning what is being taught.

Functional Behavior Assessment takes a new approach to solving behavioral

and learning problems. This approach asks WHY problems occur by examining

all aspects of the child's life, and from this analysis yields a positive

behavioral support plan that mandates what accommodations can be made to

allow the greatest success. Attendees will learn about this new approach.

Creative and Affective Experiences for Young Children with Special Needs

The workshop will provide sensory motor-based creative/affective activities

and the resources teachers and parents can use together to plan to reinforce

developmental goals of young children with special needs. The participants

will learn activities, games, and directions for making simple homemade

play-oriented materials for children ranging in age from birth to 8 with

mild to severe disabilities. Each activity will also be presented in a

written format with detailed directions, items that will be needed,

benefits, and possible adaptations for different disabilities.

Rescuing At-Risk Youth

A parent's: (1) remembrances of living, loving, laughing, and longing with

four at-risk SLD-EH progeny; (2) their modes of success adaptations-clown,

klutz, invisible-at school, home and leisure; (3) these modes as " masks of

mummery " for disguising their disabilities; (4) some easily adapted

ethnographic folk methods for identifying and remediating such children; (5)

some suggestions for encouraging similar parents to persevere; (6) four

success stories.

Sharing the Commitment

A Collier County ESE/FND project - The district has created parent/educator

teams to disseminate information and provide technical assistance to

parents. The parent member of the team assists parents and educators by

helping them understand ESE procedures, arranges or facilitates inservice

for parents/educators/community that may include topics such as parent

rights and responsibilities, due process, etc.

Parent Empowerment Project Panel

The purpose of PEP is to provide parent training, support and empower

parents who have children with disabilities along with building

collaborative relationship with school personnel and community service

providers. The target population PEP serves is minority isolated parents and

Native Americans who have children with special needs in Collier, Hendry,

Glades, and Gadsden counties.

During this session, an overview of PEP will be presented, then there will

be a panel session to answer questions.

Presenters: Jaunita Sauls Liaison to Florida Gulf Coast University and

parent coordinator for Hendry County, Georgia , parent coordinator for

the Seminole Tribe and Glades County, Marilyn Bello-Ruiz, Project director.

Our effort is to respect all cultural diversities while providing parents

with information that will help them make informed decisions about their

child's education.

Law Panel

This diverse panel of attorneys will be available to answer questions on

special education laws from the perspectives of parents, schools, and the

federal government.

Section 504

This workshop defines special education, related services and discipline

rules for children who are eligible for services under Section 504.

The ADA and Community Access

This workshop explains how the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) applies

to educational settings, private programs and childcare providers.
