Adrenal Insufficiency

Adrenal Insufficiency

When both adrenal glands are largely destroyed by lack of circulation

during shock or hemorrhage, by infection with tuberculosis or other

diseases, by hemorrhage directly into the glands, or by a poorly

understood autoimmune disorder, adrenal insufficiency is said to

occur. Other causes are less common.

Adrenal Insufficiency

The lack of cortisol leads to increased stimulation by the pituitary

in the form of ACTH production. This hormone in excess causes

darkening of the skin, one of the early symptoms of adrenal

insufficiency. Other symptoms include weight loss, weakness, loss of

appetite and energy, and low blood pressure. With any physiologic

stress, total decompensation can occur with shock, major chemical

imbalances in body chemicals, and death. This emphasizes the

importance of cortisone in the body's reaction to stress.

The commonest cause of adrenal insufficiency is the medical use of

prednisone or other cortisone-like drugs. When administered for more

than two weeks, the drug suppresses the body's own cortisone

production which then goes into abeyance for a long time. When the

drug is discontinued after prolonged use, months may be required for

the body to restore its own production. During this interval adrenal

insufficiency may be present, and under stress a true emergency may

arise. It is for this reason that such doses are tapered off slowly.

Jeff,

Adrenal insufficiency can exist in and of itself due to stress, insufficient

nurturing foods etc. or it can exist because of very long chain fatty acids.

Here is a great article on adrenal insufficiency - if you have a sore lower

back that is impeding your ability to do things like walk long distances,

you may just have tired adrenals:

http://www.biopathics.com/BioPDFs/Chronic_Fatigue_Adrenal.pdf

I thought I had adrenal insufficiency but now realize I probably have very

long chain fatty acids that is causing it. There is a disease called

adrenomyeloneuropathy which is caused by very long chain fatty acids that

leads to weak adrenals. Here is a description of it:

" Associated very closely with adrenoleukodystrophy is the disorder

adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN), which is a milder 'adult' form of ALD. It may

affect older males in the same way as ALD, and also can occasionally affect

women who are carriers of the defective gene responsible for ALD.

AMN is characterised by slowly progressive stiffness and weakness of the

legs, and sphincter disturbances, and is often misdiagnosed as multiple

sclerosis or familial spastic parapareisis. Early symptoms of AMN usually

appear when patients are between 24 & 28 years of age. These patients have

myelopathy, often with mild peripheral neuropathy, and half of them have

moderate cerebral involvement, demonstrable by MRI scan. "

What causes the creation of very long chain fatty acids is the part that I

am trying to figure out, and I think (hope) I found it in the article I sent

yesterday.
