For those of you interested in the Research on Juice Plus here are

some great studies going on in places like Vanderbilt University,

M.D. Cancer Center at the University of Texas, town

University and UCLA, University Medical Center of the University of

Mississippi, University of Sydney in Australia, King's College in

London, University of Vienna Medical School, University of land

College of Cardiology, National Institute for Hralth, Wake Forest

University, Brigham Young University, etc. to mention some.

The Science of Juice Plus+

What separates Juice Plus+ from every other nutritional supplement on

The nutritional supplement industry is booming, with double-digit

growth and an estimated $17.6 billion in sales last year in the U.S.

product-specific research conducted on our product.

A history of Independent scientific validation

From the outset, NSA wanted to set Juice Plus+ apart. That's why we

committed years ago to ongoing support of independent scientific

research to demonstrate the effectiveness of Juice Plus+.

First came our Quantitative Laboratory Analysis showing that Juice

Plus+ is packed with good, whole food nutrition. We update the

analysis regularly and publish it periodically as evidence that Juice

Plus+ remains the same great product it's always been.

Next came a bio-availability study demonstrating that Juice Plus+

actually delivers that nutrition into the bloodstream. " We all know

that fruits and vegetables contain important nutrients, " explains

Blair, NSA Vice-President for Product Development. " And our

Laboratory Analysis show that we retain much of that nutrition when

we make Juice Plus+. But we wanted to demonstrate that the

antioxidants in Juice Plus+ are actually assimilated by the body. "

That's exactly what the first Juice Plus+ Bio-Availability Study -

published in June 1996 in the journal Current Therapeutic Research -

did. In the words of the researchers: " Test subjects showed

significant increases in blood plasma levels of key antioxidants

after only 28 days on Juice Plus+. "

We learned not only that Juice Plus+ dramatically increases

antioxidants in the bloodstream, but also that these antioxidants are

functioning to reduce oxidative stress, as evidenced by a reduction

in lipid peroxides. In the study, taking Juice Plus+ reduced lipid

peroxides in the bloodstream by 75% overall, and reduced them to

undetectable levels in a third of the subjects.

As a logical next step, a group of researchers at the University of

Arizona wanted to measure the impact of Juice Plus+ on the human

immune system. The Juice Plus+ Immune Study analyzed key immune

system components to determine whether supplementation with Juice

Plus+ could improve multiple immune functions. After 80 days,

researchers found;

· significant increases in T-cell activity, which is critical to

various immune functions such as anti-body production,

· surveillance of cancer cells and destruction of virus-infected

cells.

· significant increases in the activity of natural killer cells,

which seek out and destroy cancer cells.

· significant increases in the levels of cytokines, which are

proteins that enhance T-cells and natural killer cells.

· normalization of the activity of B-cells, which detect and produce

an antibody response to bacteria, viruses and infections.

Results of this study were published in the journal Integrative

Medicine in 1999.

Another study, the Juice Plus+ DNA Study, conducted at the Department

of Microbiology at Brigham Young University, analyzed newly

replicated blood lymphocyte cells to determine whether

supplementation with Juice Plus+ reduced the amount of DNA damage in

human subjects. After 80 days, researchers found an average reduction

of 66% in DNA damage among test subjects. Perhaps most significantly,

the reduction in DNA damage was virtually the same for smokers and

non-smokers alike. There results were published in the journal

Nutrition Research in October 1999.

These landmark studies form an unprecedented foundation of

independent scientific validation for Juice Plus+. But neither NSA

nor the scientific community was prepared to stop there.

More Juice Plus+ Studies

* A second Juice Plus+ Bio-Availability Study was conducted by

researchers at King's College in London. British researchers also

found significant increases in blood antioxidant levels among test

subjects taking Juice Plus+. Their conclusion: " In as little as seven

days, (supplementation with Juice Plus+) can raise blood antioxidants

levels into the ranges associated with reduced risk of disease. "

Results from this study were published in the Journal of Human

Nutrition and Dietetics in late 2000.

* Another Juice Plus+ Bio-Availability Study at the University of

Vienna Medical School focused on gender specific differences in diet

and nutrition, using a randomized double blind, placebo-controlled

research protocol. The researchers concluded, " Supplementation (with

Juice Plus+) proved to be effective in raising plasma levels of all

nutrients studied, for both men and women. "

The Austrian study has been submitted to a major medical journal for

publication. Results were presented at the First World Congress on

Men's Health in November 2001 in Vienna.

* A group of researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia

analyzed the effect of Juice Plus+ not only on plasma antioxidant

levels but also homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid

produced by the body that often accumulates to unhealthy levels when

nutritional status is compromised. Considerable research has shown

that elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood correlate to a

significantly elevated risk of heart attack, stroke, venous

thromboembolism (blood clots in the veins) and other forms of

cardiovascular disease.

Like the Austrian study, the Australian research was a randomized

double blind, placebo-controlled study. As in previous studies,

Australian researchers found significant increases in blood

antioxidant levels in subjects taking Juice Plus+. They also found a

significant reduction in serum homocysteine levels, leading them to

conclude:

" In the absence of any dietary modification, supplementation with a

mixed fruit and vegetable concentrate (Juice Plus+) produced

responses consistent with a reduction in risk of coronary heart

disease. "

This Australian study was presented in April to the Federation of

American Societies for Experimental Biology and has also been

submitted to a professional journal for publication.

* A recent completed study at the University of land analyzed the

effect of taking Juice Plus+ on the constriction of blood vessels

that occurs following a high fat meal. Researchers concluded that

taking Juice Plus+ reduces vascular constriction and " tends to

protect against the detrimental effects of a high fat meal. " They

presented their results last summer to the Second International

Congress on Heart Disease in Washington, DC, and have submitted their

study for publication.

An even wider array of studies now underway

* An Oxidative Stress Study just begun by researchers at town

University and UCLA is analyzing antioxidant levels before, during

and after taking Juice Plus+. This will be a randomized double blind,

placebo-controlled study.

* A research team from Vanderbilt University and the Hypertension

Institute of St. Hospital in Nashville are using the latest

electron beam technology to determine whether taking Juice Plus+ can

slow down the progression of coronary heart disease in high risk

patients.

* Researchers at the M.D. Cancer Center at the University of

Texas want to gauge the effect of Juice Plus+ on the nutritional

status and quality of life of ovarian cancer patients. Ovarian cancer

is a particularly aggressive form of cancer, patients are not only

under tremendous physical stress from the cancer itself, but also

from the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy that follow.

M.D. consistently ranks as one of the top two cancer

research centers in the world.

* A study at Wake Forest University approved for funding by the

National Institutes of Health will build on the previous Juice Plus+

Immune System and DNA Studies by analyzing the effect of Juice Plus+

on cell proliferation, immune function and DNA damage in head and

neck cancer patients.

Test subjects will be patients who have been successfully treated for

such cancers in the past. The Wake Forest researchers want to

determine whether supplementation with Juice Plus+ can create

positive changes in key " biomarkers " that suggest a reduced

likelihood of recurrence of head and neck cancer.

* A study at the University Medical Center of the University of

Mississippi is attempting to quantify the impact of taking Juice

Plus+ on reducing the incidence of pre-eclampsia and reproductive

loss among pregnant women.

Pregnant women with poor nutrition are known to be at a much higher

risk of pre-eclampsia, the most common complication of pregnancy,

occurring in about 6% of all pregnancies in the U.S. It is

characterized by abrupt pregnancy-induced hypertension (high blood

pressure) and swelling of the hands, feet and face. Untreated pre-

eclampsia can progress to eclampsia, a life-threatening situation for

both mother and fetus characterized by coma and seizures.

Because of the large numbers of women needed for the pre-eclampsia

research the U.S. researchers are looking to coordinate their study

with a parallel effort at the University of Australia in Perth. This

would become the first multi-national Juice Plus+ clinical study.

Understanding Detoxification

(Excerpt from " From Here To Longevity " by Dr. Mitra Ray pgs.252-253)

It's not enough to dispel old myths; we have to be willing to live

new truths. Eating right should be fairly simple, and it shouldn't

require measuring every gram of food that we eat. Nor should eating

right require that we carry an elaborate list of good foods vs. bad

foods (based on blood type or some other new fad diet) with us to the

grocery store. Dieting or forcing oneself to eat less should also be

unnecessary-if we eat the right foods in the right proportions. Once

the body has received the nutrients it needs to function, there

should be a natural curbing of the appetite. If we'll take just a

moment to listen before we take that second helping, hopefully the

body will be telling us that we've already given it all of the

nutrients it needs in order to maintain or regain health.

Of course, when we introduce these new eating habits, there may be a

detoxification period. This incredibly beneficial process may have

some seemingly negative, albeit short-term, side effects. The immune

system and the digestive system are the primary players involved in

detoxification. Let's look at what such efforts to cleanse the body

can mean for the person going through detoxification.

· First, when the body finally has enough nutrition to

recharge the immune system, it releases immune cells, such as the

Mory has been with NSA for 14 years. He has a M.S. in

Biochemistry and soon will complete his PhD in Biochemistry.

Initially Dr. Humbart " Smokey " Santillo introduced JuicePlus+ as a

green powder that had to be mixed with water and drank. Quickly it

was decided that it needed to be encapsulated. This washing, juicing,

drying, encapsulation is accomplished by NAI (Natural Alternatives

International) in Southern California. (NSA and NAI have been

partners since 1992.) The challenges that needed to be overcome were

time, temperature, and exposure to oxygen. The earliest batches were

Laboratory batches of a few pounds at a time. Now thousands of pounds

of product are produced by a fine-tuned process that has been

upgraded 3 times by NAI. In the event of a natural disaster, NAI has

initiated back-up systems at alternate facilities that produce

JuicePlus+ according to NSA's exacting standards.

The Process:

1. Mature and well-ripened Fruits or Vegetables Selected. With the

Brazil and carry a certificate of inspection. All F & V are ripe and

are cooled immediately to just above freezing temperature to preserve

3. Thorough inspection, washing and rinsing. Any decayed, damaged or

off-color produce is discarded. The F & V are washed with an

oxidizing solution to kill yeast, mold, bacteria. If present,

Pesticides and herbicides are stripped, should any have wafted over

from neighboring fields. They are washed again with a high power

rinse.

4. Refrigerated juicing in an oxygen-free environment to prevent

oxidation and nutrition-loss. The juicing apparatus is one-of-a-kind

customized and dispenses juice and virtually dry discarded pulp. (The

pulp ends up in animal feed and is not wasted.)

5. Refrigerated mixing tank. Orchard and Garden are blended as

juices. Bacteria, yeast, mold, sugar content and pH are all tested-

for and documented as part of an electronic and paper trail. The

paper trail for each batch is more than 1 ½ " thick and stored along

with the corresponding JuicePlus+ samples for 7 years. The

Certificates of Analysis on all ingredients ensure highest level of

quality. .

6. *Proprietary drying process; sugar and water removal. The juices

are dried at a *proprietary low temperature in a " cryoevaporation "

process that maintains the natural integrity of the powder.

7. Dry Powder Blending. State-of-the-art blender holds 200 cu.ft of

powder, enough to make 79,566 bottles. NAI can produce 10-11 million

capsules a day; the batches are larger so the price can stay the same.

Leviticus.

1. Batches must be started on Monday.

2. " Kosher " is an additional quality control step. Capsules and

Antioxidants May Protect Against Diabetes

January 26, 1999

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -- Certain carotenoids -- plant compounds

with antioxidant properties -- may protect against the development of

diabetes, according to a study in the American Journal of

Epidemiology.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in

Atlanta, Georgia, measured the amounts of five carotenoids -- alpha-

carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, cryptoxanthin, and

lutein/zeaxanthin -- in the blood of 1,665 people participating in

the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The subjects were divided into four groups: those who had normal

glucose tolerance tests, those with impaired glucose tolerance, those

who were newly diagnosed with diabetes, and those with a previous

history of the disease.

After adjusting for potentially confounding factors, the researchers

found that the amounts of two carotenoids -- beta-carotene and

lycopene -- were on average highest in those individuals with normal

glucose tolerance, somewhat lower in those with impaired glucose

tolerance, and lower still in people with newly diagnosed diabetes.

" The evidence was strongest for beta-carotene and lycopene... (but)

cryptoxanthin also was lower in persons with newly diagnosed diabetes

compared with persons with a normal glucose tolerance. Alpha-carotene

and lutein/zeaxanthin were not significantly different among

participants, " the authors wrote.

Although there has been little research on the subject of carotenoids

and diabetes, the authors point to another study showing that

significantly higher proportions of men and women with known non-

insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus had carotene deficiency than did

healthy control patients.

They note that several other dietary studies of diabetes have

suggested that increased consumption of vegetables may reduce risk of

developing diabetes. Antioxidants could play a role in the

development of diabetes, but it is not known how.

" With an estimated 16 million persons having diabetes and a cost to

the United States of about $92 billion in 1992, new directions in the

prevention of diabetes and its complications are clearly desirable, "

wrote the authors. " The results from our analysis suggest one such

avenue. "

ANTIOXIDANTS 'CAN HELP' DIABETICS

The next time you hear or read one of those ads for antioxidant

vitamins or supplements, you might want to take notice, especially if

you have diabetes.

Scientists at Duke University Medical Center say vitamin C, vitamin E

and beta carotene can help diabetics stave off some of the most

common and debilitating complications of diabetes, such as blindness,

kidney failure, and amputation.

Dr. Emmanuel Opara has done extensive research on the effects of

antioxidants on what are called " free radicals, " highly reactive

chemicals that are the by-product of the body's process of turning

food into energy.

Dr. Opara says research discloses that diabetics who are beginning to

show complications of the disease also show signs that they have

depleted their store of antioxidants.

" It would be too much to assume that these findings would mean that

once you use the supplements it will cure diabetes, but there is

certainly a potential for the use of these supplements to help

regulate blood sugar. "

Dr. Opara says antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E and beta

carotene can help the body restore the balance of free radicals as

well as blood sugar.

Dr. Opara says his research shows vitamins C and E seem to be the

most effective, especially when taken in combination, but he also

warns against self-medicating.

Individuals with diabetes still need to consult with their doctors

and make sure that they have adequate supervision when they are

taking these supplements, so that the doses can be adjusted

appropriately. "

Information for Diabetics

Juice PLUS+ and diabetics make a great combination because most

diabetics can't eat enough fruits and vegetables for good health due

to the calorie content, especially of fruits. Most diabetic diets

limit fruit to two to three per day and vegetables in the green,

leafy variety to three per day. Other vegetables such as potatoes,

corn and squash are placed into the starch category.

Juice PLUS+ makes a great dietary supplement for diabetics because

Lipodystrophy Syndrome and Diabetes

Fat is stored in fat cells centrally and peripherally. The peripheral

cells include the extremities and the face. Most circulating fat is

in the form of cholesterol and triglycerides. Fat metabolism occurs

in tiny packets called mitochondria and peroxisomes. Metabolism of

fat causes release of osparks " called free radicals that can damage

parts of the tiny packets. These parts need to be repaired. Repair is

done by production of new protein and respiratory enzymes from DNA.

However, the DNA is also damaged by the free radicals. To repair DNA,

mitochondria have an enzyme called mtDNA polymerase-gamma. The more

the DNA damage, the more the mtDNA polymerase is called upon to

function.

MtDNA polymerase is specifically inhibited by Nucleoside Reverse

Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIÃs) such as AZT, D4T, and DDI.

Therefore damage cannot be repaired and mitochondria stop working

and/or die off. This is known as mitochondrial toxicity. The initial

symptom is fatigue and lack of endurance because the ATP energy is

limited.

The next symptoms are loss of facial and extremity fat with cheeks

that sink in and veins that stick out. Since the peripheral white fat

cells have fewer mitochondria than the central brown fat cells, the

peripheral fat cells are more susceptible to damage and are the first

to die. The release of stored fat causes high levels of circulating

fat which gets stored in the central brown fat cells since the

peripheral fat cells have been depleted. These are now known as the

notorious oBuffalo hump " and oCrix belly " .

The mitochondrial damage also causes accumulation of lactic acid and

an increase in blood sugar levels. Additionally, Protease Inhibitors

(PIÃs) interfere with the cellsà genetic ability to make, transport

and use glucose. This results in even higher levels of circulating

blood sugar and fats. The result is insulin resistance that

eventually becomes diabetes. Medications called thiazolidinediones

(Avandia and Actos) can combat the death of peripheral fat cells and

delay the development insulin resistance. This in turn decreases the

risk of diabetes.

To decrease the damage, the free radicals need to be neutralized.

This is best accomplished with the thousands of antioxidants

contained in food, particularly fruits and vegetables. The more

antioxidants, the less damage, and the less the impact of mtDNA

polymerase inhibition by NRTIÃs. Juice Plus+ is made from whole food

form. This capsule form is necessary since 90% of Americans donÃt

actually need more antioxidants than most people because they have

Diet, Alzheimer's linked

People with high blood levels of a normal diet byproduct,

homocysteine, have twice the average risk of

developing Alzheimer's disease, a study being published today finds.

The study suggests that other major degenerative diseases such as

cardiovascular disease and diabetes may stem

at least in part from diet, possibly making them preventable.

The study, by researchers at Boston University and Tufts University,

is being published in The New England

Journal of Medicine.

Homocysteine is an amino acid, a building block of proteins. Its

levels can rise when people eat a diet heavy in

animal protein and few fruits or leafy vegetables. Fruits and

vegetables can lower the levels by providing B

vitamins: folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12, which help convert

homocysteine to other amino acids that are

not harmful. Homocysteine, like cholesterol, has also been linked to

heart disease and strokes. Studies are being

planned to find out whether B vitamins can slow mental decline in

people with Alzheimer's, and scientists are

recommending research to determine whether the vitamins can prevent

or delay dementia in healthy people.

Four million Americans have Alzheimer's; 2 million have other forms

of dementia.

Although the study found a strong link between homocysteine and

dementia, it did not prove that the substance

causes dementia. Nonetheless, researchers say a causal role is

plausible, because homocysteine can damage

blood vessels and nerves, and it has been linked to strokes and heart

attacks.

Other studies have found high homocysteine levels in people who had

Alzheimer's, but it was impossible to tell

whether the levels were a cause or an effect of the disease. People

with dementia often eat poorly, and the blood

levels may have simply reflected inadequate diets.

The new study is the first to find a connection between high

homocysteine levels in healthy people and the later

development of Alzheimer's. The study subjects were participants in

the Framingham, Mass., Heart Study,

which started in 1948.

Dr. Neil Buckholtz, chief of the dementias of aging program at the

National Institute on Aging, which helped

pay for the study, said: " We're always looking for new risk factors

and protective factors for Alzheimer's

disease. One that everybody accepts is aging. Obviously, there's

nothing we can do about that. We're looking for

risk factors that are potentially modifiable, and this provides one

that we believe is modifiable, by a

combination of vitamins. "

For now, researchers say they cannot advise people to take vitamins

in hopes of preventing dementia or other

diseases, because studies have not been conducted to find out whether

the vitamins work. On the other hand,

Fruits, vegetables color nutrition for health benefits May 14, 2002

Personal Health Colorize your diet. That is the latest advice from

nutrition experts who have studied the health-promoting properties of

colorful fruits and vegetables available. Two recently published

books - " What Color Is Your Diet? " (Regan Books, $25), by Dr.

Heber, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University

of California, Los Angeles, with Bowerman, a dietitian,

and " The Color Code " (Hyperion, $22.95), by Dr. A. ph, Dr.

A. Nadeau and Anne Underwood - emphasize the importance of

eating more fruits and vegetables and the need to choose broadly

among richly colored options. This is not hard to do, and the payoff

in health and weight can be considerable. Most fruits and vegetables

are low in fat, replete with filling fiber and loaded with natural

chemicals that help protect against heart disease, cancer and age-

related cognitive decline, cataracts and macular degeneration. Fruits

and vegetables come closer than any other category of food to

behaving like a fountain of youth. Each is packed with plant-based

chemicals, or phytonutrients, that can help to prevent or even

reverse chronic, debilitating and deadly diseases. For a detailed

account of the protective chemicals of fruits and vegetables and how

these chemicals can help you as well as the plants they come in,

consult " The Color Code. " This book and " What Color Is Your Diet? "

also provide tempting recipes to encourage an increased intake of

plums and red apples, which are loaded with powerful antioxidants

formation of blood clots. Red wine is in this category. . Orange,

including carrots, mangoes, cantaloupe, winter squash and sweet

potatoes, rich in the cancer-fighter alpha carotene, along with beta

promotes repair of damaged DNA. . Orange/yellow, including oranges,

peaches, papaya and nectarines, which provide beta cryptothanxin,

which supports intracellular communication and may help prevent heart

disease. . Yellow/green, including spinach, collards, corn, green

lutein and zeaxanthin. These are strongly linked to a reduced risk of

which has anti-tumor properties. White wine is in this category. The

trick is to include as many plant-based colors in your daily diet as

possible. In many cases, that means eating the colorful skins, the

richest sources of protective phytonutrients, along with the paler

flesh. So try to avoid peeling foods like apples, peaches and

eggplant lest you lose their most concentrated source of beneficial

chemicals.

Dear Ms. Benkendorf,

I am pleased to answer your request for information about how I use

Juice Plus+ in my pregnant patients, including my own family.

Dietary recommendations for pregnancy are changing ever so slowly but

all changes point to a diet high in raw vegetables and fruits before,

during, and after pregnancy. Really, the obvious changes are the same

as for all children and adults of any age. If we are to prevent

cancer, stroke, heart disease, and the degenerative diseases, then we

must make these changes in our diets and especially during pregnancy

for the benefit of the developing fetus.

However, the pregnant patient is equally compromised when it comes to

consuming the recommended amount of raw vegetables and fruits.

Fortunately, we have Juice Plus+ in capsules, Complete, and gummies.

The recommendation to take prenatal vitamins during pregnancy is not

based on blood studies. It is based on approximations and what seems

best.

Juice Plus+ provides far more than any prenatal vitamin can provide

and in the proper proportions as it is supplied by the food we are

supposed to consume. Some of my patients do take prenatal vitamins

along with Juice Plus+, and that's okay. However, I make sure they

take a prenatal vitamin that has no beta carotene (the only one I

know of is called Precare Prenatal). Beta carotene as a supplement is

dangerous but in food it is good and beneficial.

I recommend breast feeding only for most patients but for lots of

reasons like smoking, drugs, poor eating habits (as evidenced by

obesity) there are some for whom I actually discourage it. In those

instances, I recommend sprinkling about one half of a capsule on that

awful baby food to make it a little better. A few ounces a day of

Complete is also a good addition. Just go read the label on some

formula and you'll understand why I make these recommendations!

Everyone I have measured blood folic acid levels on while taking

Juice Plus+ have very high levels of that vitamin. The four daily

capsules contain 400 to 800 micrograms of folic acid and it happens

to be in the most bioavailable form in whole food.

Let's give our babies the best there is to offer to help them fight

the health challenges they will encounter as they grow up.

We have not done studies involving Crohn's Disease and IBS.

However, I have recommended Juice Plus to countless individuals with

these conditions. I have not had any negative feedback. The feedback I

have received has been very positive. It is recommended that potential

customers check with their physician before starting Juice Plus, as

Crohn's and IBS are serious medical conditions.

Just start them out slowly as follows.

One capsule per day for a week. Alternate days between Orchard and

Garden.

After one week, one Orchard in the am and one Garden in the pm for the

next two weeks.

At this point, if there are no problems, go to the full amount of JP.

Hello Mick & ,

Crohn's is an inflammable bowel disease that I've had since 1982.

Rushed

into emergency surgery at 24, with my parents told I wouldn't

survive, was

the beginning of a very long struggle.

Since that time, I've been in the hospital more times than I can

count.

I've had 4 resections of my small intestines, losing my appendix and

forced into

a hysterectomy along the way. Many times I'd be hospitalized and fed

intravenously, since I didn't absorb anything I ate and suffered from

malnutrition.

Always tired, with very bad abdominal pain and unable to eat, quality

of

life was very poor! Then I started having trouble with arthritis. I

didn't know

it at the time, but this is very common since both Crohn's and

Arthritis are

autoimmune problems. The arthritis would migrate from joint to joint,

eventually settling in my right knee and foot. It was to the point

that

when I woke up each day, I didn't know if I would be able to walk or

not. I had

to have surgery on both, having the lining of the joints removed.

I had been on Prednisone for 10 years and all the others drugs known

along

the way. The side effects of the drugs were not good, but the lesser

of the

two evils.

By May 1994, I had taken another turn for the worse and they sent me

to Mayo

Clinic for testing. I literally couldn't walk, only to have them tell

me it

was Crohn's, Arthritis and there wasn't anything they could do for me.

Then, in September 1994, a friend stopped by one night after playing

golf.

He talked to me about Juice Plus and I was very skeptical. I didn't

believe

in vitamins but fruits and vegetables did make sense to me. I've had

wonderful doctors along the way and they had saved my life but, no

one had

suggested that nutrition played a role in Crohn's disease. I was

afraid to

try Juice Plus but also had nothing to lose!

I started slowly with it, taking 1 fruit capsule in the morning and 1

vegetable in the afternoon for about 1 week. Then went on to the

recommended amount of 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.

Much to my amazement, one day it dawned on me that I had forgotten to

take

my Arthritis medicine. This may not seem like a big deal to you, if

you've

never had arthritis. It's much like having a very bad headache and

forgetting to take an aspirin, it doesn't happen! So not having the

joint

pain was a very big deal. Then I started noticing different things

that I

would never have associated with better nutrition. I started sleeping

through the night, wasn't having the abdominal pain, the joint pain,

didn't

know when the weather was going to change, able to eat without

getting sick

and many other things along the way.

Can you imagine the difference in my quality of life? It has now been

years and I can't imagine where I would be and what my life would be

like if

Steve hadn't told me about Juice Plus.

I'm really surprised at the number of people with Crohn's and I've

talked to

a lot of them regarding Juice Plus. I realize that everyone with

Crohn's is

different and this disease literally can be a difference of life and

death,

so each person has to do what is best for them!

As far as I know, everyone I've talked to that has taken Juice Plus,

has had

the same results I've had. Personally, I think the main reason we've

had

these results, is because it's in a powder form. The easiest way for

anyone

to absorb, is powder or liquid. Our body doesn't have to go through

the

process of breaking it down. Then given the proper nutrition our body

is

able to do what it needs to do.

I do recommend that they take it slowly in the beginning because they

aren't

used to the nutrition and most people do go through a cleansing

period.

Sometimes they start on JP Gummies first and then move onto the Juice

Plus

capsules.

Again, I can't imagine what my quality of life would be and I'm

grateful

each and every day!

CROHN'S DISEASE TESTIMONIAL from Mike Healy (via Curt Beavers, NMD)

September, 2000

I have Crohn's disease and I am now in total remission. I have been

for

about a year and a half.

The disease started about ten years ago. For three of those years, I

didn't

know what I had and neither did the doctors. When I got an infection

and a

blockage in the colon, the doctors then determined I had Crohn's. I

lost

almost sixty pounds of mostly muscle mass over the next ninety days.

Medications were at maximum dosages. Nutrition was at a minimum. Life

was

literally going down the toilet, and the pain was something awful.

My wife, Janice was a great deal of help through this whole ordeal.

She

studied reflexology. When applied, it would relieve some pain and

give me

another couple of hours sleep. She got us into juicing to help with

the

nutrition. With an improvement in nutrition, the medication started to

work.

There were many drawbacks to juicing. Since I was sick and Janice was

working, it was very difficult to keep a large quantity of fresh raw

fruits

and vegetables on hand and avoid spoilage. All of it had to be cleaned

before being juiced. The juicing was time consuming and messy. It had

to

be done three to five times a day. Most vegetables in the juiced form

range of 80-90 % remission. All this time I was taking medication. The

most undesirable medication has been prednisone. It hasn't been fun

with the weight gains, ruddy complexion, chubby cheeks, swollen feet

legs, hair loss, thin skin, mood changes and pain. Not to mention the

possible permanent damages that may show up from prednisone and the

other

chemicals (pentasa, rowasa, 6-mp and lomotil). Even with some

improvements,

life was pretty miserable for nine years.

In October 1998 I was introduced to Juice Plus + by a doctor friend.

What a

little fiber and no sugar or salt. After ninety days, I was off

prednisone.

All improvements have been gradual. I first noticed increased energy

Antioxidant found in tomatoes may offer clues for prevention of heart

disease

Women may want to start adding more tomato products to their diets --

based on a study presented today by Harvard Medical School

researchers at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting. The

study -- compiled from data from the Women's Health Study -- suggests

that lycopene, an antioxidant in tomatoes, may reduce the risk of

heart disease in middle-aged and older women by as much as 33

percent. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among American

women.According to the American Heart Association, nearly twice as

many women in the United States die of heart disease and stroke as

from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer. In 1999, more than

500,000 women died of coronary heart disease and 53 percent of the

deaths from cardiovascular disease were in women versus 47 percent in

men.

..Study results

The study, conducted by Harvard Medical School researchers at Brigham

and Women's Hospital in Boston, analyzed blood samples of nearly 500

women from the Women's Health Study who developed cardiovascular

disease and an equal number of women from the study who did not

develop the disease. After the researchers took into account coronary

risk factors, such as history of high cholesterol and physical

inactivity, they found that those women with the highest levels of

plasma lycopene had a 33 percent lower risk of developing

cardiovascular disease than those with the lowest levels. Plasma

lycopene refers to the level of lycopene found in the blood.

Researchers believe that the level of lycopene in the blood is

related to the amount of lycopene consumed in the diet. " This is the

first large-scale study to examine the role that lycopene may play in

reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease exclusively in women, "

said lead researcher D. Sesso, ScD, instructor of medicine at

Harvard Medical School and director of epidemiology at Brigham and

Women's Hospital. " The body of research on lycopene in other

conditions such as prostate cancer is more advanced but the 33

percent risk reduction in our study has compelled us to further

investigate lycopene's power in combating heart disease. " Other

studies have identified a correlation between lycopene and a reduced

risk for cardiovascular disease. Several epidemiological studies have

found a potential benefit of lycopene in cardiovascular disease risk

reduction in men or in both men and women. The multi-center European

Study of Antioxidants, Myocardial Infarction and Cancer of the Breast

(EURAMIC) examined the association between antioxidant concentration

in fat tissue and the incidence of myocardial infraction (MI) in 10

countries. The study found that men with the highest concentrations

of lycopene in their fat tissue had a 48 percent reduction in risk

for developing cardiovascular disease when compared with men with the

lowest lycopene levels in their fat tissue. The Kuopio Ischaemic

Heart Disease Risk Factor study found that low serum lycopene

concentrations were associated with a three-fold increased risk of

acute coronary events such as heart attack and stroke

Scientists and health professionals have long recommended increasing

fruit and vegetable intake as part of a heart healthy diet in part

because of their high antioxidant content. " There are no dietary

recommendations for lycopene. Yet the research suggests that women

should aim to consume more lycopene-rich foods as a prudent measure

in the prevention of chronic diseases, " commented Gaziano,

MD, director of cardiovascular epidemiology at Brigham and Women's

Hospital and one of the study's authors. Dietary sources of lycopene

include tomato-based products such as tomato soup, pizza sauce and

fruits such as watermelon and pink grapefruit.

Misconceptions of heart disease

According to an American Heart Association survey titled " Women,

Heart Disease and Stroke Survey Highlights and Comparison " , men are

more likely than women to recognize heart disease as a leading cause

of death. Women, on the other hand, mistakenly believe that cancer is

their biggest health threat. Yet statistics show us that nearly twice

as many women in the United States die of heart disease and stroke as

from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer. " The findings from

Fibromyalgia and Lupus experiences -

& Jeffery on & Family

Dear Buddy,

I am responding to your request for my testimony regarding my

remarkable recovery from the symptoms of Lupus.

While suffering from the pain of arthritis in my hands and feet, I

was also diagnosed over six years

ago with Raynaud's Syndrome. Raynaud's is a circulatory deficiency in

my hands fingers and toes causing a very cold, agonizing pain in

those parts. I had to wear gloves and very soft warm shoes even in

the summer months. Aside from all the pain my body was fighting, I

was totally fatigued.

I wanted to sleep all day and all night. All these symptoms were

Here is the letter we talked about concerning my experience with

fibromyalgia. First of all, as you know, as a gynecologist we do not

treat a lot of those diseases primarily. However, in the course of

doing annual physical examinations, we come into contact with a world

of these problems. In general, my experience utilizing Juice Plus+

with autoimmune disease has been very favorable. As I have stated

publicly, it did significantly help my wife's polymyalgia rheumatica,

which has been over two years ago. Most of the patients who have

arthritis definitely improved as far as pain is concerned.

Specifically, as far as fibromyalgia is concerned, it takes longer

for these people to improve. I have two patients who are asymptomatic

after four and one-half months and five and one half months,

respectively. All of the others seem to take around one year to

I regret that you have fibromyalgia also. I know that you are

probably worn out by now by the chronic, debilitating symptoms of

this crazy syndrome...But there is hope! It took a seemingly endless

number of tests and physicians and misdiagnoses for me to finally be

properly diagnosed and begin effective treatment. I would like to

share my plight with you in hopes that it may help you in dealing

with your situation.

You have won half the battle with fibromyalgia just by being properly

diagnosed! It has so many debilitating symptoms that it is commonly

My name is en. I live in Beatrice, Nebraska. I'm 49 years

old and I have fibromyalgia.

In 1993 I transferred within my company and my new position put me

behind a desk, switchboard, and a computer. Very little physical

movement to this position compounded some problems I had been having

from past yean. While I sought help with new doctors, I became

sicker. My health was failing so quickly I was worried I had cancer,

so I allowed myself to go through a battery of tests and examinations

over the next 4 years and adverse reaction to most of the medications

I was given, had several x-rays, an MRI, two surgeries, lots of

physical therapy, many days any from work, and was sinking into a

deep depression. There are so many symptoms to this illness. It's

sometimes difficult for a doctor to conclude just exactly what is

wrong, and I wondered if they thought I was making It up, " because I

didn't look sick " . I was first diagnosed in February of 1997 and was

absolutely devastated when my doctor told me that that was no cure

for it! I had suffered for SO-O-O many years, and to hear that there

was " no cure " , simply left me with little hope for my future.

When I was introduced to Juice Plus+ I was skeptical, to say the

least! I felt it was just another pill to take. I chose to go to the

I am including this following segment as a thought-provoker. It is

not intended to offend anyone in the scientific groups that might be

on the other side of the fence, but it is " food for thought " , or

maybe a better way to put it is " thought for food " !!! Jeanette

- Tim O'Shea This will be a short chapter, but after you're finished

with it, you will know more about vitamins than 95% of clinical

nutritionists, doctors, supplement sales force, or bodybuilders. If

that sounds arrogant or overstated, it really isn't my fault. I'm

just a messenger; a purveyor of information. Either I'm right or the

95% are right; can't be both.

Without further ado, here's the kernel: ascorbic acid is not vitamin

C. Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E. Retinoic acid is not vitamin A.

And so on through the other vitamins. Vast sums of money have been

expended to make these myths part of Conventional Wisdom. If you have

several college degrees and all this is news to you, don't feel bad.

Unless you think your education ended at Commencement. Which is

generally true.

WHEELS WITHIN WHEELS

Vitamins are not individual molecular compounds. Vitamins are

biological complexes. They are multi-step biochemical interactions

whose action is dependent upon a number of variables within the

biological terrain. Vitamin activity only takes place when all

conditions are met within that environment, and when all co-factors

and components of the entire vitamin complex are present and working

together. Vitamin activity is even more than the sum of all those

parts; it also involves timing.

Vitamins cannot be isolated from their complexes and still perform

their specific life functions within the cells. When isolated into

artificial commercial forms, like ascorbic acid, these purified

synthetics act as drugs in the body. They are no longer vitamins, and

to call them such is inaccurate.

" .a working process.consisting of the nutrient,.enzymes, coenzymes,

antioxidants, and trace minerals activators. "

FORGOTTEN TRAILBLAZER

Dr. Royal Lee was the pioneer researcher in the field of whole food

vitamins. For decades he documented the basic facts summarized in

this chapter. His work has never been scientifically refuted. Anyone

who seriously undertakes the study of vitamins today corroborates

Lee's work. His story is a fascinating study in itself, a study of

indomitable perseverance in the pursuit of true principles. Jensen

tells us that Royal Lee's work will not be appreciated until the next

century. (Hasn't happened yet.)

Lee felt the full weight of organized drugs/medicine bearing down on

him. Reading like something out of Schindler's List, we learn that

the FDA not only persecuted Lee for challenging the economics of

synthetic vitamins, produced by giant drug companies, but that he was

actually ordered by a court to burn all his research of the past 20

years! Burn his research! When has that ever happened in this

country? First Amendment?

Going off on a tangent, ever wondered how the FDA attained its

present position as attack dog for the drug companies and food

manufacturers? It's another whole story in itself. The precursor of

the FDA was the Bureau of Chemistry. Up until 1912 the Bureau of

Chemistry was headed up by a man named Dr. Harvey W. Wiley. Here's a

quote from Dr. Wiley that illustrates where his interests lay:

" No food product in our country would have any trace of benzoic acid,

sulfurous acid or sulfites or any alum or saccharin, save for medical

purposes. No soft drink would contain caffeine or theobromine. No

bleached flour would enter interstate commerce. Our foods and drugs

would be wholly without any form of adulteration and misbranding. The

health of our people would be vastly improved and the life greatly

extended. The manufacturers of our food supply, and especially the

millers, would devote their energies to improving the public health

and promoting happiness in every home by the production of whole

ground, unbolted cereal flours and meals. "

Now obviously we can't have a dangerous lunatic like this in charge

of the public nutrition, can we? Dr. Wiley actually filed suit

against the Coca-Cola company in an attempt to keep their artificial

product out of interstate commerce, and off the market. Fortunately

Wiley was eventually replaced by a saner individual, more attuned to

the real nutritional needs of the American people, as determined by

the experts who knew what was best for us: the food manufacturers.

This was Dr. Elmer , and in his words we get an idea of the

change in philosophy that marked the transformation of the Bureau of

Chemistry into the FDA:

'It is wholly unscientific to state that a well-fed body is more able

to resist disease than a poorly-fed body. My overall opinion is that

there hasn't been enough experimentation to prove that dietary

deficiencies make one susceptible to disease. "

Bernard Jensen illustrates how the tobacco industry and the food

giants like Coke were indirectly behind the legal persecution of

Royal Lee. Cigarette ads in the 40s and 50s showed medical doctors

promoting the digestive benefits of smoking Camels. Or the

advertising of Coke and other refined sugar foods stating

that " science has shown how sugar can help keep your appetite and

weight under control. " (Empty Harvest)

During this same period, Royal Lee was kept in courts for years,

fighting to keep the right to advertise his vitamin products, because

he was a threat to the food manufacturers. Lee knew they were

poisoning the American public. He proved that refined sugars and

devitalized, bleached flours were destroying the arteries and the

digestive system, causing heart disease and cancer.

WHOLE VS. FRACTIONATED

OK, natural vs. synthetic. Let's start with Vitamin C. Most sources

equate vitamin C with ascorbic acid, as though they were the same

thing. They're not. Ascorbic acid is an isolate, a fraction, a

distillate of naturally occurring vitamin C. In addition to ascorbic

acid, vitamin C must include rutin, bioflavonoids, Factor K, Factor

J, Factor P, Tyrosinase, Ascorbinogen, and other components as shown

in the figure below:

In addition, mineral co-factors must be available in proper amounts.

If any of these parts are missing, there is no vitamin C, no vitamin

activity. When some of them are present, the body will draw on its

own stores to make up the differences, so that the whole vitamin may

be present. Only then will vitamin activity take place, provided that

all other conditions and co-factors are present. Ascorbic acid is

described merely as the " antioxidant wrapper " portion of vitamin C;

ascorbic acid protects the functional parts of the vitamin from rapid

oxidation or breakdown. ( Somer p 58 " Vitamin C: A Lesson in Keeping

An Open Mind " The Nutrition Report)

Over 90% of ascorbic acid in this country is manufactured at a

facility in Nutley, New Jersey, owned by Hoffman-LaRoche, one of the

world's biggest drug manufacturers(1 ). Here ascorbic

acid is made from a process involving cornstarch and volatile acids.

Most U.S. vitamin companies then buy the bulk ascorbic acid from this

single facility. After that, marketing takes over. Each company makes

its own labels, its own claims, and its own formulations, each one

claiming to have the superior form of vitamin C, even though it all

came from the same place, and it's really not vitamin C at all.

FRACTIONATED = SYNTHETIC = CRYSTALLINE = FAKE

The word synthetic means two things:

· manmade

· occurs nowhere in nature

From the outset, it is crucial to understand the difference between

vitamins and vitamin activity. The vitamin is the biochemical

complex. Vitamin activity means the actual biological and cellular

changes that take place when the stage is set for the vitamin complex

to act.

Think of it like gas and a car. Pumping the gas into the tank doesn't

necessarily mean the car is going anywhere. Other conditions and

factors must be also present, in order for Activity to occur. The gas

line to the carburetor must be clear, the carburetor jets must be

set, there must be an exact mixture of air flow, the ignition must be

turned on, the spark plugs must be clean, the exact amount of gas

must reach each spark plug right before it fires, no gas must be left

over in the cylinder after the plug fires. Getting the idea? If any

of this stuff is missing, there's no Activity: the car doesn't run,

or at least not very well.

Amazing as it may sound if you're hearing this for the first time,

vitamins are more than the synthetic fractions we are commonly taught

they are. The ascorbic acid you buy at the grocery store every few

weeks, thinking you are buying Vitamin C, is just a chemical copy of

naturally occurring ascorbic acid, which itself is still only a

fraction of the actual Vitamin C. Real vitamin C is part of something

living, and as such, can impart life. Your synthetic, fractionated

chemical ascorbic acid never grew in the ground, never saw the light

of day, never was alive or part of anything alive. It's a chemical, a

cornstarch derivative, a sulfuric acid by-product. In your body it's

just another drug. Synthetic vitamins have toxic effects from mega-

doses and actually can increase the white blood cell count. Vitamins

are only necessary in minute quantities on a daily basis. Whole food

vitamins, by contrast, are not toxic since the vitamin is complexed

in its integral working form, and requires nothing from the body, and

triggers no immune response.

DEFICIENCY

Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Scurvy is

characterized by bleeding gums, slow wound healing, softening bones,

loose teeth, ulcerations of the mouth and digestive tract, general

weight loss and fatigue. From 1650 to 1850 half of all seamen on

transoceanic voyages died of scurvy. It was discovered by ship

surgeon Lind in the early 1800s that British sailors were

spared the disease altogether simply by a diet rich in citrus fruits.

Since limes travelled well, they were the common choice during the

early years, and thus the expression " limeys " was coined to describe

British sailors. It was later found both at sea and in prison fare

that potatoes were equally successful in preventing scurvy, and much

cheaper to obtain. (Lancet. 1842)

We find that there is less than 20 mg of ascorbic acid in a potato.

Yet this small amount, since it is complexed in a food source, is all

the body needs not only to prevent scurvy, but also to cure it, even

in its advanced state. Such a remedy is described in detail in

Dana's amazing journal Two Years Before the Mast, written in

1840.

Whole food vitamin C as found in potatoes, onions, and citrus fruits

is able to quickly cure any case of scurvy. By contrast, the

fractionated chemical ascorbic acid has been shown to be insufficient

in resolving a scurvy condition, simply because it does not act as a

nutrient. (Lancet 1842)

Ascorbic acid simply cannot confer vitamin activity, as taught by the

discoverer of vitamin C himself, another Nobel Prize winner, Dr.

Albert Szent-Georgi.

Szent-Georgi discovered vitamin C in 1937. In all his research

however, Szent-Georgi found that he could never cure scurvy with the

isolated ascorbic acid itself. Realizing that he could always cure

scurvy with the " impure " vitamin C found in simple foods, Szent-

Georgi discovered that other factors had to be at work in order for

vitamin activity to take place. So he returned to the laboratory and

eventually made the discovery of another member of the vitamin C

complex, as shown in the diagram above: rutin. All the factors in the

complex, as Royal Lee and Dr. Szent-Georgi both came to understand,

ascorbic acid, rutin, and the other factors, were synergists: co-

factors which together sparked the " functional interdependence of

biologically related nutrient factors. " (Empty Harvest p120) The

term " wheels within wheels " was used to describe the interplay of co-

factors.

Each of the other synergists in the C complex has a separate

function:

- P factors for blood vessel strength,

- J factors for oxygen-carrying capacity of red cells,

- tyrosinase as an essential enzyme for enhancing white blood cell

effectiveness.

Ascorbic acid is just the antioxidant outer shell the protector of

all these other synergists so that they will be able to perform their

individual functions.

Now I can hear you asking, what about Linus ing, double Nobel

Prize laureate, and his lifetime espousal of megadosing on ascorbic

acid up to 10 grams per day? He lived to be 93. Are we saying that he

took a synthetic vitamin all that time? Yes, that's exactly right.

Bernard Jensen suggests that ascorbic acid has an acidifying effect

in the body, making an unfriendly environment for viruses, Candida,

and pathogenic bacteria. " Most infectious pathogenic bacteria thrive

in an alkaline pH. " ing's good health was not the result of

synthetic vitamin activity. Good genetics and the acidifying effect

are likely what brought longevity to Linus ing. He eventually

died of cancer.

Dr. Royal Lee's phrase " biological wheels within wheels " always comes

up in any discussion of whole food vitamins. Essentially it means

that individual synergists cannot function as a vitamin in a

chemically isolated form, like ascorbic acid. Vitamins are living

complexes which contribute to other higher living complexes like cell

repair, collagen manufacture, and maintenance of blood circulation.

Ascorbic acid is not a living complex. It is a copy of a part of a

living complex known as vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is a fractionated,

crystalline isolate of vitamin C.

Why are you a high school graduate or a college graduate or a doctor,

and you don't know this? Because drug manufacturers like things clean

and simple and cheap to produce. To this simple fact add the politics

which always comes into play when anyone mentions the

word " billions, " and you are beginning to get the idea about where to

begin your investigation. Burned his research???

DIETARY SOURCES,

Most vitamins cannot be made by the body. They must be taken in as

food. The best sources then are obviously whole foods, rich in

vitamins. Because of soil depletion, mineral depletion, pesticides,

air pollution, and erosion, it is common knowledge that foods grown

in American soil today have only a fraction of the nutrient value of

50 years ago. That means a fraction of the vitamins and minerals

necessary for normal human cell function. Royal Lee described the

American diet as the cultivation and production of " devitalized

foods. " Dr. Weston Price describes these empty products as the " foods

of commerce. " Think it's gotten better or worse since their time?

Thus the necessity for supplementation.

Vitamins and minerals are not functionally separable. They make each

other work. Example: vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb

calcium. Copper is necessary for vitamin C activity. And so on.

Mineral deficiencies can cause vitamin deficiencies, and vice versa.

Epidemic mineral deficiency in America is a well-documented result of

systematic soil depletion. (See Minerals chapter:thedoctorwithin.com)

So that is the other prime difference between whole food vitamins and

synthetics: whole food vitamins contain within them many essential

trace minerals necessary for their synergistic operation. Synthetic

vitamins contain no trace minerals, relying on, and depleting, the

body's own mineral reserves.

FUNNY FARMS

Following the German agricultural methods of Von Leibig in the mid-

1800s, American farmers found that NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and

potassium) was all that was necessary for crops to look good. (Frost

p7) As long as NPK is added to the soil, crops can be produced and

sold year after year from the same soil. They look OK. But the other

necessary trace minerals vital for human nutrition are virtually

absent from most American soil after all these years. Many of these

minerals, such as zinc, copper, and magnesium, are necessary co-

factors of vitamin activity. Depleted topsoil is one simple,

widespread mechanism of both vitamin and mineral deficiency in

American produce today. This doesn't even take into account the tons

of poisonous herbicides and pesticides dumped on crops. According to

the UN, two million tons of pesticides are used worldwide annually.

(Jensen, p69)

American agri-business has one motive: profit. Such a focus has

resulted in an output of empty produce and a nation of unhealthy

people. The earth's immune system is its soil. To be vital and

capable of growing vital foods, soil must be rich in both minerals

and soil-based organisms - life forms. Healthy produce naturally

resists insects. Insects are like bad bacteria in the body: they are

attracted to diseased tissue, though they do not cause it.

THE FOODS OF COMMERCE

And we're still only talking about people who actually eat raw fruits

and vegetables, which is a minority. Processed food composes the

majority of what most Americans eat. The only nutrients in most

processed foods are " enriched " and " fortified " as described below.

When a doctor says that food supplements are all unnecessary because

we can get everything we need from our food, that doctor is lacking

basic information published and agreed upon by his own peers. Whether

or not we need supplementation is no longer an issue, except for one

who is totally out of touch. The issue is what kind and how much.

Vitamin and mineral deficiency can be tagged to practically ANY

disease syndrome known to man. DW Cavanaugh, MD of Cornell University

actually concluded that

" There is only one major disease, and that is malnutrition. "

(Jensen, p8) Malnutrition of the affluent is the natural result of

the foods of commerce.

WEBSURFING

The best vitamins are called whole food vitamins. You won't find this

out on the Internet, however, because the Web is dominated by

mainstream nutritional theory. In the area of vitamins, the Internet

is 99% marketing; 1% actual information.

There are 110 companies who sell vitamins in the US. Less than 5 of

them use whole food vitamins. The reason is simple: whole food

vitamins are expensive to make. A few of the largest pharmaceutical

firms in the world mass produce synthetic vitamins for the vast

majority of these 110 " vitamin " companies, who then put their own

label on them, and every company claims theirs is the best! It's

ridiculous! Americans spend over $9 billion per year for synthetic

vitamins. (Frost p2)

Whole food vitamins are obtained by taking a vitamin-rich plant,

removing the water and the fiber in a cold vacuum process, free of

chemicals, and then packaging for stability. The entire vitamin

complex in this way can be captured intact, retaining its " functional

and nutritional integrity. " (DeCava p.23.) Upon ingestion, the body

is not required to draw on its own reserves in order to complete any

missing elements from the vitamin complex.

Mainstream marketing of vitamins and minerals has successfully

created the myth that vitamins and minerals may be isolated from each

other, that correct amounts may be measured out, and then we can

derive total benefit from taking these fractionated chemical

creations. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Vitamins and

minerals, and also enzymes, work closely together as co-factors for

each other's efficacy. If one part is missing, or in the wrong form

or the wrong amount, entire chains of metabolic processes will not

proceed normally. Result: downward spiralling of health, probably

imperceptible for long periods of time.

MARKETING AND PROMOTION

What is the marketing philosophy behind the prevalence of the type of

synthetic vitamins available in the supermarket and mall vitamin

stores? Simple: profit above all else. Once the public is shown that

vitamin supplementation is necessary, the rest is marketing.

Marketing is the art of persuading by suspending logic and twisting

data into junk science. Example: what's the actual difference in

composition between Wheaties and Total, two cereals put out by the

same company? Total is advertised as being much more nutrient-rich

than " ordinary " Wheaties. Look at the labels. What justifies the

extra $1.30 for a box of Total? Answer: 1.5¢ worth of synthetic

vitamins sprayed over the Wheaties. That's it! That's what " vitamin

enriched " always means. The other trick word is " fortified. "

Generally that means that the food itself is devoid of nutrients or

enzymes, so they tried to pump it up a little with some " vitamins. "

Cheap synthetic vitamin sprays are all that is required for the

manufacturer to use labels like " enriched " and " fortified. " These

words are red flags if a food needs to be fortified or enriched, you

can bet there wasn't much there to start with.

The mega-vitamin theory doesn't really hold when it comes to

synthetics: If A Little Is Good, More Is Better. Macro doses of

vitamin E, and also vitamin D have been shown to decrease immune

function significantly. (DeCava.) It stands to reason. Vitamins by

definition are necessary in phenomenally small doses. The discoverer

of thiamine, a B vitamin, and the man who came up with the word

vitamin , Dr. Casimir Funk, has this to say about synthetics:

" Synthetic vitamins: these are highly inferior to vitamins from

natural sources, also the synthetic product is well known to be far

more toxic. "

Nutrition authority DeCava describes it;

" Natural food-source vitamins are enzymatically alive. Man-made

synthetic vitamins are dead chemicals. "

Oxymorons: military intelligence, rap music, synthetic vitamins.

The marketing of fractionated crystalline synthetic vitamins has been

so successful that most nutritionists and doctors are unaware that

there is something missing from these " vitamins. " Vitamin

manufacturers compete for customers with identical products they all

bought their synthetic vitamins from the same couple of drug

companies. To differentiate their product, each makes claims of " high

potency. " Our vitamins are higher potency than theirs, etc. The point

is, the higher the potency, the more the druglike effects are

present. Natural whole food vitamins are very low potency. Remember

the 20mg of vitamin C in a potato that was able to cure a patient of

scurvy? That was low potency. Low potency is all we need. Low potency

is enough to bring about vitamin activity. High potency overshoots

the mark the chemical is very pure and refined, like the difference

between white sugar and the type of sugar that's in an apple.

THE MILLIGRAM GAME

Generally speaking, if milligrams are being discussed at length, the

author has no clue about vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are refined,

high potency chemicals, and therefore may be accurately measured in

milligrams, just like drugs. This has nothing to do with vitamin

activity or nutrition, except in a negative way.

HALF THE STORY

The same type of incomplete action can be seen with any synthetic

vitamin. Let's take beta carotene for a minute, which the body can

turn into vitamin A. Now you'll remember that vitamin A is necessary

for good eyesight, DNA synthesis, and protects cells from free

radicals. A study reported in Apr 94 in the NEJM of some 30,000

Finnish subjects showed conclusively that synthetic vitamin A had no

antioxidant effect whatsoever. A true antioxidant helps to protect

heart muscle, lungs, and artery surfaces from breaking down

prematurely. In this study, the subjects who received the synthetic

beta carotene actually had an 8% higher incidence of fatal heart

attacks, strokes, and lung cancer than those who got the placebo

(sugar pill). Stands to reason: the synthetic brought no vitamin

activity to the tissues that needed it. As a dead, purified chemical

introduced into the body, the synthetic further stressed the immune

system, the liver, and the kidneys which all had to try to break down

this odd chemical and remove it from the body. It would be bad enough

if they were harmless, but synthetic vitamins actually have a net

negative effect.

Vitamin A

was first discovered in 1919. By 1924, it had been broken down and

separated from its natural whole food complex: " purified. " By 1931,

LaRoche one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world,

even today had succeeded in " synthesizing " vitamin A. That means they

had created a purely chemical copy of a fraction of naturally

occurring vitamin A. Naturally occurring vitamin A is found

associated with an entire group of other components:

· Retinols

· Retinoids

· Retinal

· Carotenoids

· Carotenes

· Fatty acids

· Vitamin C

· Vitamin E

· Vitamin B

· Vitamin D

· Enzymes

· Minerals

Vitamins and Minerals Somer 1992

Isolated from these other factors, vitamin A is a fraction which

cannot perform its biological functions. Taken as a synthetic, it

must then draw on this list of resources already in the body in order

to complete its make-up. Whole food vitamin A, by contrast, is

already complete and ready to go.

Most synthetic vitamin A consists only of retinal, retinol, or

retinoic acid. The well-publicized potential for toxicity with mega

doses of vitamin A involves one of these three. Vitamin A toxicity,

known as hypervitaminosis, always results from an excess of

synthetic, " purified " vitamin A, and never from whole food vitamin A.

(DeCava, p 86) Effects of vitamin A toxicity include:

· tumor enhancement

· joint disorders

· osteoporosis

· extreme dryness of eyes, mouth and skin,

· enlargement of liver and spleen

· immune depression

· birth defects

Beta carotene

is a precursor the body can convert to vitamin A. Unfortunately, as a

supplement, synthetic beta carotene is usually " stabilized " in

refined vegetable oils. In this trans fatty acid form, oxidation

occurs and the chemically " pure " beta carotene can no longer act as a

nutrient, because it was changed. Almost all synthetic beta carotene

is produced by the Swiss drug giant Hoffman-LaRoche. This form can no

longer be converted to vitamin A. The best it can be is worthless,

and at the worst is toxic.

Natural vitamin A and beta carotene are well known as immune boosters

and cancer fighters, in their role as antioxidants. Synthetic vitamin

A by contrast has actually brought about significant increases in

cancer. A study done in Finland provided smokers with large doses of

synthetic beta carotene. Lung cancer incidence increased 18%! ( NEJM

Apr 94 " The Alpha Tocopherol Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention Study

Group " )

These findings were corroborated two years later in another study

written up in Lancet. Pharmacologic doses of syntheric beta carotenes

were found to block the antioxidant activity of the other 50

naturally occurring carotenoids in the diet. Anti-cancer activity was

thus blocked by the synthetic. (Lancet 1996)

With the vast outpouring of wrong information about vitamins A and C,

the findings of a 1991 article in Health Counselor are no surprise:

50% of Americans are deficient in vitamin A and 41% are deficient in

vitamin C. Synthetic vitamins cannot prevent deficiencies.

FAKE VITAMIN B

In one experiment, synthetic vitamin B (thiamine) was shown to render

100% of a group of pigs sterile! 100% would be considered a

significant finding. (Dr. Barnett Sure, Journ Natr 1939) Perhaps the

fact that synthetic vitamin B comes from coal tar, maybe that has

something to do with it, you think? Then there's vitamin B12, which

comes from activated sewage sludge. (Frost p 60) Been shooting blanks

since you started on those multi's?

For the licensed dieticians and clinical nutritionists reading this

in disbelief because it is too " unscientific, " consider the way

Theron Randolph MD delineated between natural and synthetic:

" A synthetically derived substance may cause a reaction in a

chemically susceptible person when the same material of natural

origin is tolerated, despite the two substances having identical

chemical structures. The point is illustrated by the frequency of

clinical reactions to synthetic vitamins especially vitamin B1 and C-

when the [same] naturally occurring vitamins are tolerated. "

IRRADIATION

According to Los Angeles naturopath, Dr. Jack Singh, all commercial

lecithins in supplements, as well as most vitamin D, comes from

irradiated vegetable oils. That's rancid, oxidizing trans fatty

acids! A birthday party of free radicals. This is the precise

mechanism for arterial wall breakdown prior to plaque deposits, then

arteriosclerosis, then heart disease. I thought we were supposed to

be taking vitamins to stay healthy!

LOST HORIZON

Why is this information so difficult to find? It's in none of

the " alternative " health 'zines, or any of the mainstream media.

Alternative-Lite guru n Whittaker, in his summer 1998 newsletter

actually had the temerity to state outright " Synthetic vitamins and

whole food vitamins are identical. " I'm sure his synthetic vitamin

company and all its retailers were reassured by this incredibly

arrogant and flagrantly inaccurate pronouncement. But who is

objecting? Only those clients of the 5 companies who know enough to

take whole food vitamins, because they have become educated to

realize the difference. These are the vast minority, having no

control of the media.

Royal Lee and Harvey Wiley lost. Nobody knows who they are today,

except we few. This is no accident. What everybody does know is Pepsi

and Viagra and Wonder Bread and prednisone and Double Whoppers with

Cheese and Zantac and Baskin-Robbins and Long's Drug Store. And

grocery store vitamins: synthetic vitamins. That's America, today as

the product of yesterday. Control of information in America today is

one of the most sophisticated systems of influence ever devised. The

simple ideas contained in this chapter are simply not available to

the mass consciousness. The documentation is out there, but you

really gotta dig.

100 years ago if a medical doctor saw a case of cancer he would call

all his colleagues to come and have a look, telling them it was

unlikely they would see another case, as cancer was so rare. People

rarely died of heart attacks; in fact the term heart attack itself

didn't even exist. There was no incidence at all of atherosclerosis.

Diabetes was practically unheard of. What did they eat? Fruits,

vegetables, meat, butter, and lard. But none of it was processed with

drugs and chemicals.

Today one in three dies of cancer. One in two dies of heart disease.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. (Vital

Statistics) Is that progress? If you are a food manufacturer it is,

and especially if you are a drug manufacturer. In the 1980s the WHO

ranked the US as #22 in the world in overall health. Today we're #98.

Male sperm count is less than 20% of what it was in 1929. (1981

University of Florida report, Natural vs. Synthetic) Infant mortality

is up; birth defects are up. We spend $1.2 trillion per year for

health care, most of which goes for administration and executive

salaries. Who are the largest advertisers for TV and the printed

media? Right: drug companies and food manufacturers. Do they want to

keep the ball rolling? You bet. Will they kill you to do it? You bet.

Do they want people to take charge of their own health by natural

inexpensive foods and supplements? Negative. A cure for cancer has

been " right around the corner " since Nixon. People are starting to

ask questions; they're less inclined to believe the slick ads coming

every 10 minutes on TV and in Newsweek.

Perhaps Hippocrates did not envision doctors just as detail men or

drug reps. He most likely thought like Henry Bieler, MD:

Nature, if given the opportunity is always the greatest healer. It is

the physician's role to assist in this healing, to play a supporting

role.

- Finding the Right Cure for You

So what do you do? Well, you now have some insight that your vitamin

needs are not being met by the Safeway generics. And you want to try

a whole food vitamin. It's simple: look on the label. After each

vitamin mentioned, if it lists a chemical, the vitamin is a

synthetic. If it lists a growing plant like peppers, orange peel, or

even mushrooms, that's a whole food vitamin. After that, you may wish

to inform yourself about the processing, if possible. Even good

sources can be rendered vitamin-less by heating or cheap

stabilization processes. After you get the hang of it you'll soon

wonder why nobody told you about something this obvious years ago. I

know just how you'll feel.

Supplementation is no longer an extra; even to the generally

informed. It is essential for optimum health. That is the first level

of awareness. The next rung on the ladder is the information

contained in this chapter. It's really not a question of whether or

not you believe me, but rather whether you know about the existence

of whole food vitamins.

Jeff,

Thank you for posting your extensive summary of Juice Plus. I have never

promoted JP directly to the group because of the complaints of selling on the

site. I have left it to someone like yourself who was/is willing to look at the

information independantly and as a unbiased third party, share the information

based upon its merits, not the supposed/somehow " ill-intention " behind

disseminating it. The wealth of information that is available about the

benefits of this product (truly the most comprehensively researched

neutraceutical in the world), from medical and institutional sources, continues
