Guest guest
Hi there I have had both lungs operated on and I think it helped me a lot. Put it this way I am nowhere near as sick as lot of people in this chat group. Its almost 12 months since I was last on antibiotics. Mind you I have worked at it, I walk the dog and until recently I was very involved with the Rock and Roll Club, I still dance here and there but don't get involved like I did. Admittedly I can't dance the really fast numbers now but that is probably age as well. I had surgery when I was about 28, I am now 51. When I get sick though, I really get sick and usually takes me a little while to get over the worst of it. The last time I had infections I have been to an osteopath also and they can help you to loosen up the mucus in your lungs. Hope this is of some help. Guest guest
hi maggie, yes, this is major surgery but if it helps you to breathe and reduce infections, i too would go for it. be sure and let us know when you have a surgery date....our prayers will be there with you and the surgeons etc. prayers, too, for you and your family as you wait....not easy. i truly believe that patience is a virtue and i have a lot to learn and i'm 60!!!! thanks so much for your kind message to roger and i and the music too. jenniferMaggie wrote: Thank you to all who sent information on lung surgery my way. It looks like it's going to happen. Major surgery - a Thoracotomy and Lobectomy. The surgeon was horrified at the condition of my lungs and said something should have been done about them 2 years ago. My upper left lobe is so damaged that antibiotics can't kill the infection. The whole lobe has to come out, and maybe more if the infection has spread. He said that he would be conservative and err on the side of taking out too little rather than too much lung, and that he's never crippled anyone respiratorily. That's good. Without surgery my life expectancy is only 5-10 years. The chance of total recovery after surgery is 50/50. That's a tough thing to hear, but I think this surgery is an answer to a prayer. I'll let ya'll know when I have more details about when it'll happen, but he said within the next 3 weeks. I'm a little scared, but I know as with everything and everyone God will see us through it. With Him all things are possible. We can't do it on our own.BTW, I had my first ever Pulmonary Function Test today, and my overall lung capacity is 80%. My small airway capacity (when I blow out as much air as I can) is only 16%! Does anyone mind sharing their results? I'm curious.MaggiePost your free ad now! Yahoo! Guest guest
Hi Maggie, I don't know if this will make you feel any better or not! But had his CAT Scan 2 years ago after 18 months of a productive cough that the peadiatric doctors kept denying he had! Every time anyone listened they said no his lungs are clear. There was one doctor in particular who kept refusing to do an X Ray not matter how hard I pleaded. Anyway, he had an X Ray as a routine test before going to theatre for cardiac investigations and it ws discovered that his right centre lobe was totally collapsed, as a result of that X Ray he wsa referred to the respiratory consultant hwo had him in immediately he heard him cough, for a bronchoscopy and CAT scan. Both proved he had severe bronchiectasis affecting both lower lobes and hte right central lobe. It was decided htere and then that he did not have enough healthy lung to survive removal of the affected areas. However, although he has been very ill many times, and is looking as if he is heading downhill again, in between infections he does enjoy his quality of life. He has just had three weeks of really good healthy, high energy levels, able to literally run up the stairs the other day, something I have not seen him do for 5 years. We have learned to enjoy those moments as they occur, rather than dwell on the what if's and what may bes. We know his prognosis is not good, and even less good since the episodes of resistant infection he has just overcome. However his quality of life day to day is what really counts. and that we try to make as good as we can. Not sure if I have encouraged or not but hope it helps. Good luck with the tests, I hope they can perform the surgery and that it is a temendous success. Hugs, love and of course, ever in our prayer.
