How Diwali is celebrated

Yes! Finally the mother of all festivals is here.

Diwali is called the festival of lights, but is actually a festival of

heavies. Heavy eating, heavy spending and writing heavy articles on how to

celebrate Diwali.

In Diwali, everyone wears new clothes. Businessmen proudly display their new

assets. Newly married couples display each other. The newly married husband

displays his newly acquired riches obtained from his new in-laws. I hope

that in the future the wives can also display their new divorce decrees from

such husbands.

Diwali is also a festival of bursting. Children burst fire-crackers. The

maid servant bursts several glass items in the house cleaning. The husband

burst his brain vessels over the huge bills. That is why, on the first day

he is given a bath to soften him up and loosen his wallet.

In Diwali, we go to our relatives houses to wish and greet them. This is to

increase social interaction. To increase love and closeness. But mainly it

is to avoid meeting the other relatives who are visiting you on Diwali.

Diwali is also a festival of fun and laughter. For example, the greeting

card companies and Mithai makers laugh all the way to the bank. The mobile

companies have great fun devising various SMS songs to send on Diwali and

even greater fun billing the customers. The companies also have great fun

devising various Diwali schemes which sell the same old things at the same

old price, but with a new 40 % off discount label.

In Diwali we are supposed to discard all the old things and get new items.

So this Diwali, let us discard our old prejudices, like religious

fanaticism, like gender discrimination, like caste systems and let us

acquire new prejudices like greedy business policies, over consumerism and

flaunting of ill gotten wealth.

Happy Diwali to everybody. And a very happy new year too!

Tujhse naraaz nahi, Ashok, Hairaan hoon main, Hairaan hoon main.

Tere masoom sawaalon se Pareshan hoon main, ho Pareshan hoon main.

Happy Diwali to you too, Ashok and Fly.
