Yes! Before our own SP Sir, there was an SP Sir of Medicine already -

Dr. S. P. Nigam.

Dr. Nigam had a great command over English. He took our clinics and

more than Medicine, we learnt how to speak impeccable English. He was

also a die hard fan of Drama, so he always used to single me out to

ask the most difficult questions. Besides his interest in drama, he

was a dramatist himself. How? Listen to this:

Once he entered the wards with our batch. Suddenly he perked up. Then

much like a wolf after its prey, he sniffed the air carefully. He

spread his hands dramatically and said, " Yes! Yes! "

By now we were all agog. We tried to smell something but all we could

smell were disinfectants.

Then Nigam Sir dramatically announced, " I think that there is a

Hepatitis case in the ward! "

The registrar tried to say something, but Nigam Sir said, " No! No!

Don't tell me! I'll locate him. "

You can imagine how thrilling it was for all of us. There was the

great Nigam Sir sniffing here and there and shaking his head at each

bed. There we were, a large gang of 10 or 15 neophytes, trying to

emulate him, and woefully unable to get a single whiff of whatever

Hepatitis smells like.

Suddenly, Nigam Sir stopped in front of a man sleeping completely

covered in the Sevagram - Red blanket. Then he pointed his

outstretched quavering index finger at that man and told me,

" Minister, (He called me minister from one of the roles that I had

enacted in a drama), look in this man's paper and read to me the

diagnosis. "

I hurriedly pulled out the paper and scanned the diagnosis. To my, and

everyone's astonishment, there it was in bold print " Acute Hepatitis " .

Nigam Sir gave a satisfied Smirk and we gazed at him with reverence

and wonder. Some of us kept sniffing the air throughout that day's

clinic. The only things missing were a magician's cloak and music!

That evening, when we narrated this wonderful incident to our seniors,

they brought us down to earth. They quietly explained. The registrar

briefs Nigam Sir before the rounds about every new case in the wards

beforehand!

That was Nigam Sir's Drama with a capital D which we witnessed first

hand. A short, dark man with a gigantic stage presence, that's how

I'll always remember him fondly! That and his beautiful English!

Like every Gynaecologist wishes every newly wed couple, let me also

join all of you in wishing Divya and Tarun a FRUITFUL wedded life!

Welcome Jyotsna to the MGIMS e- group.

MGIMS alumni would be happy to know that Jyotsna's sister Divya got

married

to Tarun Naik yesterday at Bombay. I am sure both Jyotsna and Alok;

and

Namita(Jyotsna's sister 1989 batch) and Vikram must be pretty tired .

Jyotsna (1985), Namita (1989)and Divya ( she graduated from Russsia)

are Dr

SP Nigam's daughters- the great professor of medicine at MGIMS

(1970-78).

I join hundreds of MGIMS alumni in wishing Divya and Tarun a happy

and

blissful co-existence.
