Ava does this and it drives me crazy. I hate it. When she was younger

she used to even do it to teachers, though now that she's almost 17 she

stops herself most of the time. I always saw the compulsion to mimic as

a kind of Tourette thing. No matter. I have never been able to stop her

form doing it. So I have no advice, I'm merely commiserating.

Hi ,

One of my other kids () went thru some OCD months at a preschool

age and had to have me say the " right thing " or either I wasn't

saying it the exact way he wanted. Who knows, he was so young but,

yes, drove me a bit insane! :) It seemed to go along with some

perfectionism things he had going on. His behaviors luckily fizzled

out after a few months.

Anyway, at that time I knew it was OCD but really hadn't read up on

it so far as treatment.

But since your daughter is 10.5 and she knows that this is part of

her OCD, is she willing to work on it at all, like the mimicking?

, my present OCD child, 15, is also on Celexa. He's been on

it a bit over a year. We got him up to 40mg for the first few months

and then since increased it up to 50mg, which he is still taking.

He's a tall, skinny kid, was maybe around 100 lbs, at least 90-some,

when he started on it. I actually don't know that weight has a lot

to do with dosage, unless you're very young. It usually takes a high

dosage, as you know, to treat OCD. I'll let the more experienced

parents - we've only been on this one medication - offer suggestions

on the medication since your daughter's been on the higher dosage for

a few weeks. If she'd just increased it, I'd say wait it out a bit

to see if the increased behaviors subsided. We got up to

60mg but I saw no further benefit so we just went back down to the

50mg since it does make him pretty tired, the only real side effect

for him. Now, OCD is still " there " for him, but things are very

manageable and OCD isn't interfering with things as it was early on.

We used inositol the first 2-3 years. The studies say for adults up

to 18grams. We got up to around 14 grams for and varied from

10-14 over time. We would just mix the powder in Kool-Aid, as

inositol is supposedly somewhat sweet tasting so it blended well. I

used to joke I was probably the only mom who made her son drink Kool-

Aid for breakfast! If you are thinking of just adding inositol to

augment the Celexa, then of course you want to have a lower dose. I

think if it was me, I'd start with maybe 2 grams for maybe the first

week or so, then 3 for a few days....and go to 4grams for a month's

trial, but I'm the cautious type. An article by Dr. Penzel says they

figure a 40lb child can go up to 6 grams maximum for augmenting an

SSRI. I'm just one who's afraid my child will boost things up a bit

more than studies show as I'm a bit sensitive to a lot of meds. Link

has a " just right " part of OCD also. He said everything he

did was to keep something bad from happening to him and he also had

to get a " just right " feeling. Boy, trying to get that " just right "

feeling could drag out for hours!

Well, hope some of this helped. Lots of empathy for you anyway!
