Guest guest
I've had Graves since 1993...hope this doesn't stir anything up. flu shot question Today I saw a primary care physician for the first time in years, and she was great. Wants to put me on Armour, as I said in another post. The thing is, with my history of Graves Disease and lymphoma, she felt I deserved to get a flu shot, given my immunity problems (both are linked to a poor immune system). So I took the shot...and now I see on a Graves Disease yahoogroup that many members are saying we should not get flu shots...stirring up the immune system backfires on us, etc. Anyone know anything about this for sure? It's too late, but I wonder if I should have declined the shot?
Guest guest
yep, you shouldn't get a shot. The flu shot can and sometimes will stimulate the immune system, bringing Graves back into the picture. I have one Endo who knew this, the other two never mentioned it. seems after flu shots, many people's Graves symptoms come out. Guest guest
I'm declining it this yr, and I work a nursing floor, so I am at risk. I had it last yr, then I had the thyroid antibodies tests in March, and I have them in the thousands, of both kinds for Hashi's, antithyroglobulin and antithyroidperoxidase. I don't know what they were before, but it could be that they weren't this high, or maybe I just helped them along. We don't have an immune system that doesn't work, ours usually OVERworks, to the contrary. The thing of it is that our T Killer cells make a big mistake, and try to kill US instead of the real enemies, or rather, possibly along with the real enemies. In the process, the adrenals overwork, trying to take care of all of this, they tucker out, and that's when we're no longer immune to viruses, colds, allergies, and such. That's a simple version of the explanation. flu shot question Today I saw a primary care physician for the first time in years, and she was great.
