Chronic Sinusitus

Hi ,

Sorry for responding so late to this, but I'm a few weeks behind in reading my emails.

I used to be plagued with Chronic Sinusitus leaving me with about 10 sinus infections a year (I was constantly on Zithromax) and I was always stuffed up and living on decongestants. In late 2000 I had sinus surgery and it's the best thing I ever did for myself. In the past 4 years I have had maybe 1 sinus infection a year, and even then they go away very quickly now one I start to treat it. Also I can breath again!! I was never able to lay down in bed at night without a decongestant. Now I never need them (except of course if it is a night where I used a Viagra. That's the only time I ever need decongestants now, and I must say, under those circumstances I'm happy to take them :)

Like you I was quite skeptical about having this sinus surgery as I had heard that many people do not have successful results. Thankfully that was not the case for me. I am so grateful the doctor talked me into it. I has truly improved my quality of life!! In my case they 1. "roto-rooted" the drainage hole so with better drainage bacteria would not get stuck and cause infections; 2. trimmed the turbinates. i believe those are the membranes in the nose that get swollen and cause you to feel stuffed up; and 3. corrected a deviated septum.

My only word of caution is to be very selective in the doctor you seek out. There seems to be a high failure rate in these surgeries and I suspect much of that has to do with the expertise of the surgeon.

Let me know what you decide.

He wants to have endoscopic sinus surgery soon. I have to weigh risk/benefit because that part of the body can cause infections more so than other parts. I stay stuffy in nose, sinuses, and right inner ear canal and at night this creates an annoying cough, which keeps me from sleeping soundly. If this procedure is effective, I'd definitely want to do it if the risk factors seem low. It beats living on decongestants.Living in Fla with all the flowers in constant bloom probably doesn't help too much either. To those that have had this done:Is it painful? Does it really work well? How long is "down time"? What was it like? Thanks
