I agree with . I know it always helped me alot before we casted, seeing kids in Mehta casts that are playing and happy and not bothered at all by there casts. Also, maybe have a list of items that new cast parents may need i.e. calendula cream, aquaphor, poise pads, cetafil cleanser, pullups, ect.. Don't know if that is something important, but I think the little things help out as well.

Thanks . Joanmom to Hayden 32nd CastTreated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

Joan and Heidi,

That is the BEST idea ever!! Items needed after casting and what to expect on the 1st cast day. I had NO idea what moleskin was or petaling...etc. And what to buy...jeez...so much to know and learn not to mention diapering and what to expect on cast day and the first week or two following. I would be happy to help or give suggestions but since Heidi is the pro writer it would be good for her to do it. If you need any help please let me know! :)

I can not agree more. A list of what to bring would be soooo helpful. And what to expect after they wake up from their first cast. Allie will be getting her first cast on Dec 16 so I will be posting in the next few days wanting this information. If you need any before casting pics or videos of an older child(3yr) I would be more than happy to help. I feel it is important to include that even if a child is past the rapid growth stage they can still benefit from casting. Just my thoughts.

Heidi and Nick,

My hubby and i were talking and although we havent seen the PSA, of course maybe we should make this about treatment for IS in general and not JUST the Mehta method of casting. As we all know SOME other methods of casting has helped other children like Tasha's boy and some dont have over the sholder casts like Jenn's son and some have congential scoli like Jane's daughter that after surgery can benefit from a risser cast. Just thinking maybe we shouldnt say that only a Mehta cast would help. Although i am all for Mehta casts, please dont get me wrong. I just think we should focus on treatment for PIS with casting, and that Mehta method is the PREFERRED method to go with. I just dont want to scare any people off because we only say one method will work for one type of scoli, ya know?? Maybe im wromg since i havent seen the PSA and maybe its all about the Mehta method and if so then that makes sense. Just a

thought...

Hi !

I'm typing this, but this is Nick's suggestion: (More to follow, as we think!)

When people first visit the site, if they have Googled or seen the PSA on TV, YouTube, Facebook, etc...

Right on the home page, there should be a prominent note or box that reads something like "Welcome! If you are the parent, or know a baby or young child with a curvature of the spine, or a baby or young child who has been diagnosed with scoliosis, CLICK HERE to read about the initial steps you can take, to determine if your child can benefit and/or be cured by Mehta Method casting."

That would direct them to a page with a simple checklist of the most important info and steps, basically what to do first. Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)

The 15 second PSA never mentions the Mehta Method. The 30 second one does. The shorter one is to inform people that this is a serious condtion, and that you should not wait-- directing people to the web site for more info.

I bow to on all content for ISOP, obviously, this is her baby, and she is the Founding Mother. Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)

Heidi,

I agree is the founder of ISOP and as the founder, thank God for her and all of this. I just didnt know how it was presented in the PSA. Oviously we all agree awareness is key. Thats the main message. Thank you for all you and Nick have done to make this PSA possible! Who would have ever thought we would be going to television!!

Much love,

Morning!Would like to get the PSA out asap but must make huge website revisionsfirst. Any new stories or updates that we can add? I know that many ofyou will have great suggestions/ recommendations on how ISOP can improvewww.infantilescolio sis.org, so please send my way, so we can properlyprepare for the new influx of families. We will add:-PSA-new stories/updates (Livs included.... I think its been over 4 yrs....ooops)-pdf of Pediatrician Awareness Campaign/diagnostic manual, etc....-new articles (print media/published)-any news footage-footage of kiddos living in castsWhat else? I know there are sooo many more revisions to be made. Let meknow.Have a great weekend.

and everyone,

I completely agree that, as I have well learned here from such amazing mothers, fathers and kids, there is no "one size fits all". I'm sure the very few docs who do Mehta Method casting would completely agree- every single child is unique, and they can have one or more condions on top of the scoil.

BUT! THE BIG MESSAGE THAT WE CAN GET OUT TO SAVE BABIES IS-- ACT FAST!!! A CAST IN MEHTA'S EARLY TREATMENT METHOD CAN SAVE A BABY OR YOUNG CHILD'S LIFE!!!

This is fact.

I think, just my opinion, we need to cut through and clarify to the ortho community what exactly Mehta casting is, and why it is different from Risser casts. I totally agree Risser casts can and do work at times, but they can also cause rib deformities, etc...which is why the Mehta cutouts are so specfic. And, as could put it better, they are done on a 2 dimensional table. Scoliosis is a three dimensional condition, and, Mehta casting is done on a 3 dimensional, EDF TABLE.

Those Risser casts "fell out of favor" due to problematic issues, people considered them "barbaric". Again, I could not be more supportive of parents who need to opt for surgery, we will too if we need to. It's just the best possible option for the child, period!!!

Just a

If you would like to use my son as an example of not treating in time you can. They waited until he was 2 1/2 and now he will have surgery for sure and the cast isn't correcting as well as they Dr had hoped. If Hayden doesn't have any correction this second time around, they will only do one more cast then just put him in a brace to hold his curve until surgery. So although it is sad, we can use him as an example of what could happen if you wait. Joanmom to Hayden 32nd CastTreated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

and everyone,

The 15 second PSA never mentions the Mehta Method. The 30 second one does. The shorter one is to inform people that this is a serious condtion, and that you should not wait-- directing people to the web site for more info.
