Radiation is thought to be the most common trigger for thyroid cancer. I don't know about benign knots.cleebryant wrote:

Hi,A weird thing has happened this week. My older sister (30 years old) found a knot in her neck on Monday, had the ultrasound yesterday and today she received the results that it is a nodule (2.8 X 2.1). I don't know details yet (hot/cold).As some of you know - this happened to me almost a year ago. About 6 years ago, my brother (29 years old) had a knot removed removed in the neck area - not the thyroid.Has anyone heard of this type of thing before? We have no other knowledge of this in our family - but for all 3 of us to get growths in our necks within 6 years of each other makes me wonder if we were exposed to something as children?!? Any thoughts?Lee__________________________________________________

Either or both, genetics and/or some type of exposure. I was diagnosed with

low thyroid first, then, a few months later, my oldest daughter, then two

yrs later, my middle daughter. My youngest daughter is complaining by

telephone of a round hard " knot " low around the thyroid area now, for the

last month, but she's skipping all over the place, never coming to visit me,

so I can't get near enough to her to look at it, and she won't go to a

doctor! Come to think of it, she needs to come to mama first, then to a

doctor, maybe, hehe. She is very thin and nervous, can't seem to sit still

in one spot very long, etc....just like I was in the beginning. Tendency

t'wd Hashimoto's IS sitting on a chromosome----HLA-DR5? Or something like

that.

BTW, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis infiltrates also have a tendency to go into

surrounding lymph areas, not just to the thyroid, while the inflammation and

destruction is going on. Did you say that the 3 of you have had

autoantibody testing or not?

,

You said that inflammation may go into the surrounding lymph nodes?

I have three in my neck that are swollen.

When visiting Dr. P in October I asked him about the one closest to my

thyroid. He said it is totally UNrelated to my thyroid.

I went to my GP who had me get an ultrasound, and they couldn't even

find it. They could feel it, but said there was not enough calcification.

Said not to worry, BUT come back in a few months. I never did!

I've been in the 1000s on my anti body check and want to know where you

get that information about the inflammation? I know it HAS to be thyroid

related, but would love to show the Dr.'s this.
