I have not had anything prescribed improperly. When I mentioned some problems to my gynecologist, she said it is probably a thyroid and did a blood test, which she forwarded to my internist, who, in turn, called me and told me to come in for a check-up and prescribed medicine: Synthroid, generic: levoxyl. I have had no problems since. I think I must be very fortunate. Thanks for watching out for us. I hope you can help the people who are not so fortunate to have the medical care that I do. By the way, I live in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and my physicians are in Montgomery County, land.Jan wrote:

Hi Jan,

Hashimoto's? Not sure but I think they said I had a multinodular

goiter when I was first diagnosed. I believe they ran antibodies

when I saw Dorfman one time. I became hypo in '92. I went through a

lot of stresses and I believe went hyper first, I was really skinny,

started panic attacks and then went hypo and became huge. I was put

on 100mcg of Synthroid and told to see a psychiatrist for my panic

attacks/depression. He put me on Prozac, Zantac for my stomach,

later Topranil (sp) I think it was and I honestly can't remember what

else. I took Soma too for my back because I had such horrible back

pain. I also took a lot of Xanax and pheneragen for my stomach. I

can remember falling asleep on my desk at work during lunch hour. I

would come home and go to bed.

In '94, I finally thought enough.. I quit all the psychs, the meds

and weaned off of everything except synthroid with the help of my GP

and quit working. Synthroid was lowered to .88mcg, then .88

and .75mcg, then .75 and .50 alternating and I started feeling hypo

again. Went to Miklius, was able to get Armour prescribed for me, but

was lowered down to 60mg from 90mg. My FT4 was flagged low once

at .77. I got her to run FT3 the last time and that was also low at

252 in January. I've been undertreated for a long time. Started

panic attacks again in '01 and struggled with that a bit. Even

though I had hypo symptoms and complained, was given tests for

rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, (ANA screen?), and a B12 test. Had none

of those. Would not up my dose.

Internist put me on paxil, then lexapro last year. Couldn't

function, felt miserable, weaned myself off of that. I upped my dose

on my own to 102mg Armour, just saw a new dr. and now I'm upped to 2

grains of Armour and maybe more, will see how I do. Whew!

Hi, Jan:

Hashi's Hypothyroid w/low DHEA and probably fatigued adrenals

Currently: 1 grain Armour, 5-10 mg DHEA, 2.5 mg hydrocortisone 4x

day (to come)

Previously while undertreated for many years the following were

prescribed to deal with (mask) the symptoms:

low dose birth control pills

anti-depressants SSRI's (several kinds)

tricyclic anti-depressant (NO thanks!)

anti-anxiety pills

NSAIDS

Pain pills (narcotic/tylenol)

Bladder pills to supposedly build up the bladder lining

And even an anti-narcolepsy pill for energy (only took a couple of

those -- sheesh!)

Best of health to one and all.

optimized? Does your doctor even test Free T3 and Free T4? I note

that you sell large size fashions, but only take 100 mcg of Levoxyl.

If you are indeed a large lady, you may be quite undermedicated on

that dose.

>

I think you are right, In high school I never had a weight problem

until my thyroid got all outta whack I gradually started gaining

weight and my mental/motor functions started to suffer. My doctor

rans tests and found that my thyroid gland had virtually stopped

functioning. I have a new doctor now, so I'm not sure what she tested

me for, but I'll get a copy of my blood work results when i got back

on the 13th of July, so I should know something then.

I know that high blood pressure runs in my family, both parents, all

of my grandparents and my older brother suffers from it as well as

stomach problems. I've read that anemia is often the result of

hypothyroidism and my bladder problem is a result of my weight. I

think bad genetics are to blame more than anything. The only thing I

haven't developed yet is diabetes and cancer, 2 other diseases that

hits my family hard. But I will ask my doctor about the Armour and

see what she has to say about it.

The first doctor I went to DID get a TSH and, I think, T4. My TSH was 1.59,

I think. I forget what the T4 was. I had put myself on beta estradiol 17

(and feeling better, at least to some extent) thinking I was pre menopausal.

He said, no, it wasn't my thyroid and prescribed some antidepressant.

(Though I was anxious and not really depressed at that time.) I forget

which one. I took it about three weeks but then quit when I decided the

risks outweighed any possible benefit. Not that I saw any.

I went to Dr. Manzanero next, we tested for TSH, FT3 and FT4. My numbers

were still in a range where most people feel pretty good. He did, I think

the next time I went in, decide to try me on low dose cortef and armour as

my symptoms were clearly hypothyroid. I THINK he later tested me for

antibodies but I don't remember for sure. (No, if he did.)

Interestingly enough, getting on Armour made the estradiol superfluous and I

was able to get off that.

I am still not 'right' but much better, I think.

We would like to get a brief response from all members, including

those who do not live in Texas. State your diagnosis and current

treatment. Then answer the following question.

How many of you have had the following drugs improperly prescribed

for you instead of adequate thyroid treatment:

antidepressants, statins, NSAIDS, anti-anxiety meds, sleeping pills,

diet drugs, amphetamines, pain pills, female hormones, stomach pills

such as Nexium. . . .what am I leaving out?

Thanks!

Hey Roxanne,

That's ok! <G> Yes I did post saying how it went. He told me to

take 2 grains. Said I might need more than that based on my results

today but I'll do this dose for 2 weeks or so and see how I feel. I

was really impressed, he has so much knowledge. I can't tell you how

great he is. I would definitely go see him. I feel so relieved. :)

Hi,

I was just wanted to make sure that you are getting the correct

tests done. Don't even worry about the Total T3 or Total T4, only

about the Free T3 and Free T4 (and TSH if the Doc insists). These are

the active form of the hormones being used by your body. I believe

that if you keep these two at the upper end of the spectrum you will

be able to get off of all of your meds except your thyroid. I realize

that it is MY opinion and MY experience, but it is worth a try. Don't

forget, have a FREE T3 & FREE T4 blood test done and go from there. I

would also try going on Armour if you aren't allergic to pork. It is

the best out there for hypothyroidism. Good luck and keep us posted!

Haha! Exactly! Still on the pain pills and anti-anxieties but

that'll take a little time. I hope eventually an optimal dose of

Armour will chase off the need for those. Oinks~

Not that I love the synthetic T4s anyway, but I'm just wondering if the

Nexium killing all your stomach acid is helping to do in the effects of your

thyroid hormone, when it hits your digestive tract. I have the gird also,

but I have had to quit these types of meds (other than a little tums every

now and then), and that's why I quit them.
