- I just had to drop you a few lines, to address this problem. I

often think about how hard it must be to have a child with an obvious

disability. I guess it's kind of like racism. There are people who are black

americans who look white. There are kids like Crystal who on 1st (

maybe even 2nd ) glance appear to be average kids. Appearances, in both

instances, are very deceiving... Now the person who looks white, has a choice to

make. They can just be themselves make sure that everyone knows their

heritage. They could also choose to distance themselves from their heritage,

just try to blend in with white society.

I have never tried to hide my child's deficits. Now that she's over 3 years

old, it's easier to see that she has rather serious developmental delays. But,

I've never had to field the kind of totally assinine comments that you,

others with children with microcephaly, have. I really feel for you. I also find

it hard to find the right thing to say. I'm often torn between being afraid of

saying something totally stupid myself ( if I've said something stupid in this

e-mail, I had no intention to, believe me ) , or not saying anything at all.

If you ever do think of something appropriate to say, that you wouldn't

find offensive, but would open the door for a meaningful conversation -

I'm ALL ears !!! There have been times that I've wanted to approach a family

with a child in a wheel chair try to make contact. BUT - I really

don't want them to think that I'm some kind of crazy or something !!!

Very soon, our Crystal is going to have her very own Convaid Safari Tilt

Stroller/pushchair... My hubby was a little wary about getting her a stroller

that looks like a wheelchair. We looked at other models, but they didn't have

the features that we needed so that Crystal would be comfortable. I say tough

sh*t !!! If anyone wants to say something, let them. I might just be developing

a hard skin right along with you { smile } ...

I really admire you for your attitude tenacity. I think that life

guard learned a very IMPORTANT lesson. I bet he thinks twice before approaching

another parent with a handicapped child !!!

Give the boys great big {{{ HUGS }}} kisses for us...

Take care God bless you all....
