Is this OCD...in me?

We've often wondered where my kids got there OCD as we don't have any

family history. I often tease my husband that he's a bit obsessive;

but, all joking aside, he would never meet the criteria because it

isn't really disruptive.

Yesterday, though, my daughter did something that sharply brought back

a childhood memory that really made me wonder if I had a touch of OCD.

That sparked several other memories, and now I'm really wondering.

I distinctly remember not being able to drink from " glass " glasses

because they were " dirty " . I drove my parents crazy because everywhere

we went, I had to had a plastic or ceramic cup. (This was probably

between the ages of 8-12). I also remember having to rotate the glass

after I drank so I wouldn't sip from the same place twice because it

was dirty, also. Sure sounds obsessive to me...

And, the other biggie was I had this thing for years where I would

systematically rip off the corners of the pages of the books I was

reading and chew them (and then spit them out). (Yes, I know it's

gross). I don't remember why I did it, but I did it for years despite

many attempts to get me to stop.

So, now I'm wondering if I had a touch of OCD. And, if I did, does it

sometimes go away by itself and completely disappear? Really, I

haven't done anything like that in *years*.

Jeanne,

I, too, as I learn about OCD will remember things that I did as a

kid. I read something on here about pulling out eyelashes, and I

remembered a time in my life when I did that a lot (maybe 10 years

old or so). In my own case, however, I still see characteristics in

myself (not eyelashes!).-

Jeanne,

Sounds like OCD to me.....I know personally someone who recovered totally from

childhood OCD and has no symptoms at all right now. My son's psychiatrist who

specializes in OCD says that in his 20+ year practice, his experience is that it

most often decreases and becomes nonexistent in adults. He says if it does

continue, it generally isn't troublesome. We all know adults with ongoing

problems with OCD-as some aren't even diagnosed until they are adults, so we

know it doesn't in every case. Also, co-morbid conditions and the intensity of

the symptoms seem to be a factor. Still, from what I've read on this site, the

concensus of many therapists is that it is a life-long illness that has no cure.

You may be another example of how one can " outgrow " it.

Hi Jeanne,

I went thru some OCD episodes also as a teen/young adult that were

short-lived. With , he just seemed to get hit hard and it

might be quite a life-long battle for him, we'll see (he's 15). I

still have tendencies towards OCD but nothing that is distressing or

disrupting, etc.

Also some things I think of as sensory that have been related here

regarding kids, I also went through some or similar.

I can look at my mother and see at least one person the rest of us

got tendencies/OCD from (if you want to say " got from " ).

But I say, yes it can disappear altogether. Just my thoughts.
