Guest guest
Dear nna, I also have a 7 yr. old with OCD and clothing sensory issues and I am a pediatric OT. I would suggest going ahead with the evaluation because any added knowledge is helpful regarding ideas to help the sensory issues. The OT would use sensory integration techniques and try and desensitize your daughter, increase her tolerance to whatever she has problems with in a fun way. But both SI and exposure are probably needed because the Dr. asked my daughter last week to try and roll her sleeve up and she refused. So he asked me to roll it up and she immediately pushed it down and got upset. He asked her what she was scared of , and she said, " If it gets too tight it might cut the circulation off and my arms might fall off " I never knew she thought that! OT would not be as helpful with her compulsive fear but working together with both techniques should help. The clothing issues are so frustrating and I should be more tolerant with my background but it is different when you live with it than treating it at work! Hope this helps. Guest guest
Just my thoughts on this. Since you can get the OT free through the school system and if you don't feel the OT time at school would be " taking away " from anything (instructional time or something), then I would go ahead and see about the OT. These things might well be addressed through the ERP alone but OT can also help in the sensory areas. The OT will work on the " whole body " area. My son had private OT and it was very beneficial for the sensory things, even through the OT was prescribed to help his writing skill (motor skill). Just my opinion! > > Hi all, > > My daughter is 7, has OCD and never diagnosed with SID, but she has > always had problems with certain clothes, shoes, socks, etc. When > her OCD got bad last month, she could only wear flip flops to > school. Guest guest
Sue, Thank you! This did help alot, I will contact the school about starting with OT. As far as I know there is no compulsive fear associated with her sensitivity issues, but like you said it can be a big surprise when they finally open up. Thanks again, nna. > Dear nna, I also have a 7 yr. old with OCD and clothing sensory issues > and I am a pediatric OT.
