We were quite successful in ordering used equipment.

Some of it we got from eBay.

Some of it we got from doctors in the local area who were retiring (at a great discount)

Some of it we got from our medical supply rep. He travels to a lot of offices and told us a doc had an extra ultrasound machine he was trying to sell.

A couple of the items on eBay didn't turn out to be as we expected. Be sure to measure the cost of what you are buying against the return policy, as you may be stuck with something that doesn't work so well. This happened with one of the NST machines we bought.

You might also ask the hospital if they have any used equipment they are trying to get rid of.

Several docs in my area recommended a medical equipment supply dealer

in our area who supplies used equipment--usually those starting out

buy from him and when they can afford what they really want, they

resell to him, and the cycle goes on. I was lucky to get everything I

need used in excellent condition (office equipment+furniture). He

recovered the top of an exam table--it looks brand new! Everything

gets washed, cleaned and fixed up.

I also used a used equipment dealer when I started at the beginning of the year. I bought a couple things on ebay also. My experience was similar, everything was sparkling clean and in excellent working condition, even the things that were slightly ragged when I looked at them got reupholstered, shined etc... I put his number on the site before for those in the midwest.
