Guest guest
I've been super busy the last few days but I'll grab a minute to tell you that my kefir grains got here! I'm afraid yours got majorly mooshed in the mail. I scraped the mush into a jar and added milk just in case they can " pull themselves together " LOL, but I also got some from Greg from Greg's Grains, and they were intact. so I'm now working on reviving them. They really smell like yeast, is that normal? Mrs. Siemens Helpmeet to , mommy to Zachary & Lydia " For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation.... They really smell like yeast, is that normal? When I got my grains they were mushed and smelled very yeasty. The grains were fine though and started growing right away. The yeasty taste mostly went away after a few changes of milk. I think the yeasts in the grains will sometimes grow more than the lactic acid bacteria, making a yeasty tasting kefir. I don't care for culturing my kefir at room temperature too long. I think the warm temperatures allow the yeasts to grow better. I do like kefir very much when it is cultured at lower temperatures in the refridgerator. I start my kefir at room temperature for 12 hours or so and then move it to the fridge to age for a week or more. It gets a nice acid tartness that I like and doesn't seem to develope the yeasty taste I find. Regards, Bruce
