The Amish Community in Ohio is the same. Some also rent vans that take them to Wal-Mart for their food, when their neighbor down the road has much better for sale. The elders do recognize that modern foods are poisoning their community too, and are beginning to take steps and are speaking out. Thank ACRES for that. Some have always stayed close to the land, but you can't count on all Amish/Mennonite farms being that way.... Yet.

re: the Amish

> I am respectful of some of the aspects of the Amish way of life- but agree that we can't assume that the way they eat is in line with the WAP Foundation or NT principles. My mom in Indiana has been buying products from the Amish and proudly offers it to me and my kids, thinking that I will be more impressed with it than commercial store-bought food. The granola contains hydrogenated fat and the "instant chicken broth mix" contains MSG!

Needless to say, I am NOT impressed.~~Kathy>> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> You know, I heard this several times around here, so I decided to watch some Amish in the hardware store and sure enough they bought some RoundUp. Scary!

I won't use the stuff myself, but they were buying it to spray on driveways and walks... where their kids and wives run barefoot.~~> > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> The Amish where I live use more chemicals on their crops and cows than conventional farmers do. The scary part is they don't seem to understand what they are really doing. Just because your spraying ROUNDUP on GMO roundup ready corn using horses and going barefoot doesn't make it more natural for me.~~

One of the tiny fringe of WAPF-based Amish farmers down the road from

me has told me that in the 50s (or maybe the 60s), salespeople from

the Chemical Farming companies targeted the Amish and would hold

sessions with large groups of farmers showing them films dramatizing

the advantages of their Chemical Farming products. You can just

imagine what it was like to be an Amish farmer without a science

education and unaccustomed to the flickering images of mainstream

American culture, without access to any alternative opinions about

these products to temper the overwhelming impression of a miracle in

agricultural development.

Yes, there is at least one or two generations of the Amish that have

grown up taking Chemical Farming and junk foods as a normal way of

life.
