A group of farmers interested, and many already involved in, alternative agriculture helped state Sen. Doug Cunningham of Wausa, Neb., propose a bill to the Nebraska Unicameral earlier this week that would allow farmers to advertise and deliver unpasteurized (raw) dairy products to their customers. As it stands now, farmers can sell their raw milk but have to rely on word-of-mouth and the customers must pick the products up from the dairy farm. However, a subsequent Thumbs Down has to go out to the state's dairy council, processors and large dairy operators who seek to derail the raw-milk legislation. They seem to be hiding behind a smoke-screen of health risks associated with consumption of unpasteurized dairy, when the real issue appears to be purely economics -- a worry that part of their market share, no matter how small, may be lost.
